Culture The Swiss Spirit: Going Far, Going Together OUR Crest

The crest is headed by five stars which symbolise Equality, Peace, Progress, Justice and Democracy. These are ideals on which a brotherhood of persons can build. Below, there is a torch which signifies the light of knowledge and the love of learning. Encompassing it are five rings symbolising sports and the part they play to link persons together. The five horizontal bands denote the five houses as rivals in competition but steadfast in fraternity.

OUR Flag

The flag is composed of two parallel bands; one in turquoise and the other in white. In the middle of the flag is the school crest. The flag is an emblem which encompasses the hopes and aspirations of the whole school. The colours of the flag, turquoise and white, are therefore, the school colours. On the sports field especially, the school colours are worn by our school teams as they engage in friendly rivalry with other teams.

OUR Motto

The motto is SCIENTIAE PATRIAEQUE GRATIA, or FOR THE SAKE OF LEARNING AND FOR THE STATE. Whatever is undertaken or promoted in the school must seek to develop within students a love for learning and the desire to improve through learning. The sense of personal fulfilment reaches its ultimate meaning and purpose in the service of the nation. OUR School Anthem Blaze A Path Of Glory

THE CENTRE FOR THOUGHTFUL LEADERSHIP We had a history of achievements in the Uniformed Groups, Student Council, Sports and CCA Leaders which was pivotal in the shift of the Swiss vision in 2012 - from “Vibrant Learning To effect the CYL function well, we developed the distinctive Community” to “Thoughtful Leaders”. The vision of giving Thoughtful Leadership Programme (TLP). The TLP is also the every student a chance to lead – to bring about meaningful Learning for Life (LLP) curriculum that propels the Thoughtful and sustainable change in their environment set the new and Leadership focus. It is one of the two Distinctive Programmes inspiring direction for us. We became one of the six Community (the second being the Applied Learning Programme Scientific Youth Leadership (CYL) schools in Singapore in 2014. Research Skills) of the school.

Figure 1 Thoughtful Leadership Programme (TLP) is the Swiss Lifelong Learning Programme (LLP). The TLP or LLP is housed under the Centre for Thoughtful Leadership Committee formed in 2013.

The TLP is driven by the Centre for Thoughtful Leadership that would culminate in the hands-on VIA efforts of the students. (StLP). The idea was to have ‘taught’ curricula in GPP and StLP PAGE SWISS COTTAGE SECONDARY 22 YEARBOOK 2016

THE GLOCAL PERSPECTIVES PROGRAMME

The GPP is a school-based curriculum designed to inspire our students’ thought, concern and action for the community by making constant links to the world they live in. The GPP is a weekly one-hour formal lesson that is designed for two years. At the end of the two years, we expect our students to be able to:

• discuss local and world issues with confidence • articulate a well-considered position on an issue • actively initiate suggestions for possible social action and change and • experience knowledge amalgamation using authentic materials and contexts through the use of communication and collaboration skills as well as through independent learning and knowledge application.

The EFG Thinking Framework With a deliberate emphasis placed on developing leaders who are grounded in values, the GPP team developed a Thinking Framework with three dimensions of thought – (i) to think ethically, to think in a forward-looking and positive manner and to think with the global/local (Glocal) contexts - so that when they create change, it is humane, sustainable and meaningful. The framework further delineates the specific habits of thinking under each dimension of thought.

For example Ethical Thinking is displayed through moral reasoning and perspective-taking in the light of a dilemma or conflict of priorities. Likewise, Forward and Positive Thinking are effected through problem-solving and positive-self-talk in the face of challenges. Glocal thinking is demonstrated through critical thinking and an awareness of cross-cultural skills.

Thematic Overview: Building An Inclusive Society

Selected skill-sets anchor each module taught and assessed every term. The topics were selected to support the VIA level outcomes and to infuse a sense of empathy for their environment and the people in the community. This approach was targetted at helping students in their roles as Thoughtful Leaders who want to build an inclusive society. (Refer to the following picture on the topics planned for the two years.

Forward & Positive Thinking “Watch your thoughts, they become words; watch your Ethical Glocal words, they become actions; Thinking Thinking watch your actions, they become habits; watch your habits, they become character; Thoughtful Watch your character, for it Leaders becomes your destiny.” SWISS COTTAGE SECONDARY PAGE YEARBOOK 2016 23

An Overview of the Two Years of Learning and Assessment

Developing an Informed Response On Topics Through Perspective-Shifting Students were exposed to perspectives on a given topic that are explored through phases: from the activation of their (i) familiar and personal schema, then (ii) the familiar but less personal local views and and finally (iii) the less familiar and less personal global stand-points – before arriving at an informed and locally rooted personal perspective. This approach of shifting perspectives was anchored through a variety of pedagogical approaches – research, role-play, debates, discussions and inquiry-based projects.

The six core skills of the EFG (Ethical, Forward/Positive and Glocal) Thinking Framework: Perspective-Taking, Moral Personal Reasoning, Positive Self-Talk, Problem Solving, Cross-Cultural (less to more informed) Communications and Critical Thinking are integrated into a Thinking Scaffold which also gets students to process values. (Refer to Step 4 of the Seven-Step Thinking Scaffold).

The Thinking Scaffold is modelled in each module by the teachers and students apply these skill-sets. This is repeated across the various GP modules in a Spiral Progression to anchor the desired Thinking mode of the Thoughtful Leader. The Seven-Step Thinking Global Local Scaffold can be summarised into three stages of Awareness, Action and Advocacy which is the overarching approach of all Thoughtful Leadership Programmes (GP, StL and VIA).

Stages of Implementation in 2014-2016 The GPP was implemented in 2014 to Secondary 1 Express students as a pilot programme. Selected lessons were trialed among students from the Secondary 1 Normal Academic and Normal Technical streams. By 2015, all Secondary 1 and 2 classes were introduced to GPP. The Swiss Student Leadership Programme has a 2-tier structure comprising cohort programme as well as select programme. For the cohort programme, the school developed a student leadership curriculum based on our PEMT framework (Principled, Efficacious leaders with Managerial competencies and a Transformational mindset) which focuses on explicit leadership competencies at the different cohort levels to allow students to develop into a Thoughtful Leader. The student leadership curriculum has a spiral progression across the 4 years.

Eldercare Project As part of our vision to mould students to be Thoughtful Leaders, the Student Council continued their journey of the Diff-ability Project this year and extended it to advocate for the elderly. Looking at the community in Bukit Gombak, there was an increasing need to reach out to the elderly as there was an increasing number of elderly living around the vicinity.

The increasing need to build an inclusive society has propelled the Student Council to embark on this simulation project, the ‘Eldercare Experience’ to help Swiss students explore more real life issues that are happening around them. This project aims to help students be able to have a better understanding of the concerns and problems the elderly face in their daily lives. We hope that such programs will sensitise our students and spur them to make a positive change in the community.

Primary School Outreach Project This year, our Student Council and Sports Leaders also came together to host our cluster primary school student leaders in a ‘Swiss Leadership Experience’, to share their knowledge and experience in being a student leader.

Through the experience, not only do the primary school students get a chance to interact with other student leaders, they also learned a few leadership skills such as being a team player, the importance of empathising with your team mates and effective communication skills. In addition, these students were also given the Diff-ability Experience where they were put in the shoes of the People with Disabilities (PWDs). Values-In-Action Programmes

THE VALUES-ACTION-PROGRAMME

The Swiss VIAP is one of the key levers to develop student character, leadership and spirit for volunteering. With a two-tiered whole-school approach to deliver the programme, all Swiss students experience VIA through diversified cohort programmes and student-directed VIA activities.

“Awareness-Action-Advocacy” (3A) provides the framing for our VIA curriculum and programme to accentuate the importance of youth volunteerism through student-directed VIA. Our students, as thoughtful leaders, will step forward to advocate for the good cause they believe and lead others to achieve position and sustainable change for the community. Our VIAP is crafted in three tiers:

Tier One: Cohort VIA programmes

The cohort VIA programmes centralised on specific theme:

Secondary One: Environmental Awareness Secondary Two: Junior Care Secondary Three: Elder Care

For the secondary One cohort, to develop the sense of care and belief in self to make a difference and contribute to the community, a recycling project was embarked to collect items like newspaper and clothes. All proceeds garnered from the recycled items were donated to the Society for Physically Disabled. The theme of Space has been symbolically used throughout to relate to the image of space in universe parallel to our environment. At the same time, the theme focused on spatial concept. Students were channelled into their own inner artists as they made marks onto sphere by experimenting with given materials. They would then contribute their spheres to a mega- installation artwork with the same given theme of space, led by Ng Yang Ce; Singapore’s multidisciplinary artist who makes sculpture, drawings and installations. The mega artwork installation was conceptualised to bring all the spheres together through the sub theme of embracing unity in diversity. The idea was to let students reflect on their differences through the spheres and at the same time, give them the notion of connectedness. PAGE SWISS COTTAGE SECONDARY 36 YEARBOOK 2016

The performance is a rich blend of all the performing arts groups which exemplifies how the leaders overcome all odds to not just NOT JUST TO IMPRESS impress, but also express themselves with their art form. The audience was taken on a journey with six Performing Arts Council leaders as they leave their legacy in the school in their final year. It was a roller coaster ride of emotions and amazement as we see our young talents take over the stage with skill and precision. While recognising the varied nature of the cultural heritage from the different ethnic groups, we also acknowledge the commonalities among these cultural heritages and the role that they play to unify Singapore as one.

Our students were exposed to several cultural heritages such as our traditional cuisines and the use of Singlish which helps to bring Singaporeans together from all walks of life. Food vendors selling a wide variety of cuisines ranging from satay, ice-kacang and teh tarik were called in to educate our students on the rich heritage of these cuisines. The lower secondary classes also had the opportunity to try their hand at playing various traditional games such as the top, five stones and chapteh. Teachers and students alike had a fun time playing these games together while learning about the heritage of these games.

It was a fun and memorable day as the school came together to commemorate Racial Harmony Day. Student’s Reflections

“I learnt to be more courageous and empathetic. Prior to the trip, I was apprehensive about interacting with people with special needs. But through the three days of activities and interaction with the residents at Saleng Home, I learnt how to interact and work with them.“ – Daniel Irfan, 3N1

“I can better appreciate the value of teamwork. Though we barely knew each other for a few days, we bonded together through the challenges and fun times. We looked out for one another and helped out whenever possible. I also felt a sense of accomplishment and understand the value of resilience. Although we are exhausted from the planning, preparations and execution of activities for the residents, we were determined to persevere till the end, as we do not want to disappoint the residents at the home.” – Jing Wen, 2E2 PAGE SWISS COTTAGE SECONDARY 50 YEARBOOK 2016

Lower Secondary Science Students are introduced to the four fields of Applied Sciences: Material Science, Environmental Science, Mechanical Engineering and Biomedical Sciences through modules that are taught in the course of two years. The 5E (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate) model is adapted to engage the students in the classroom. Lessons are designed to include many investigatory and authentic learning activities. The modules aim to build a strong foundation for upper secondary and at the same time serve to introduce students to the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) related careers.

Upper Secondary Upper secondary students continue their science education with the rigour and foundation established at lower secondary. All our Express students are offered 2 to 3 Pure Sciences at upper secondary.

Our Normal(Academic) students are offered Combined Science and have a choice between Science (Chemistry/Biology) or Science (Chemistry/ Physics). Students who perform well at lower secondary Vision may be offered Express Combined Science where they sit for the Science Leaders of Tomorrow: Excite, Explore, Engage paper at secondary four. The Mission of Swiss Physical Education (PE) Department is to equip each student with the attitudes, skills and knowledge to pursue and advocate a physically active and healthy lifestyle. Our Vision is to nurture all our students to be ‘Healthy & Fit Leaders of Tomorrow’.

Our structured PE programme through the levels is aligned to the latest MOE PE syllabus. In order for the department to realise its vision, efforts are focused on ensuring that our students will acquire a range of movement skills; understand and apply movement concepts, principles and strategies in a range of physical activities. In the conduct of our PE lessons, students are also taught to demonstrate safe practices during physical and daily activities; display positive personal and social behavior across different experiences; acquire and maintain health-enhancing fitness; as well as enjoy and value the benefit of living a physically active and healthy lifestyle.

Currently Assessment for Physical Education eXcellence (APEX) is the main overarching programme in the PE department. The grade that the students receives at the end of a particular module is able to serve as feedback on student performance, motivator for greater achievement, feedback on the PE teacher’s teaching and also provide a common language for a standard of performance in PE. With that mission in mind, students will have a PE grade reflected in the year-end report book.

Staff Professional Learning & Development

The school is committed to develop a team of engaged mentors and leaders in professional practice to bring about Thoughtful Leadership in our students. Learning and development is seen as a key process in achieving this commitment.

The purpose of staff professional learning is to enable staff to continually learn and improve their competence, skills, knowledge and effectiveness so as to build a team of staff who are competent in professional knowledge and practice to bring about the desired student outcomes and school improvement. Professional Learning Teams (PLT) – Our key approach to Professional Learning The Learning Champions (LC), together with the department heads are the key driver and support in planning and facilitating professional learning activities in each department. The LCs lead and influence teachers in PLTs to establish a strong learning community.

Having PLTs is a whole school approach to enhancing student learning through teacher collaboration and ongoing professional learning. A key objective for establishing PLTs in Swiss as is to improve teachers’ instructional practice. PLTs have helped the school to build a teacher-initiated culture of collaboration, where teachers collectively strengthen their professional practice, thereby fostering a stronger sense of professionalism, commitment and collegiality amongst school staff. PAGE SWISS COTTAGE SECONDARY 84 YEARBOOK 2016

Mentoring – The next phase of how the school will be learning Mentoring as another key mode of learning is fast becoming a norm in Swiss. Mentoring practices is already a key feature in the Thoughtful Leadership Club Series where all participants are being matched to a mentor of their choice. Mentoring is also strongly featured in the STEM programme which the school embarked on this year. The benefits of mentoring are felt both by the mentees and the mentors in enhancing professionalism, leadership thinking as well as classroom instructions and practices. The school is looking forward to putting more resources to make mentoring a more pervasive practice in the school.

Swiss Learning Fest! The annual Swiss Learning Fest! is an official event for the school to come together and celebrate a year of learning at the end of each year. It is designed with the intention for various individuals and groups to showcase what they have learnt, experimented, implemented and changed in their classroom practices, attitude towards teaching & learning or aspiration towards educational leadership. As a school, this presented a good conclusion to a school year, when we can celebrate, honour and inspire each other for another fruitful year learning and change.
