The Chief Ministers of India are the heads of their respective state governments. There are Chief Ministers in India in every one of the twenty-nine states and even in two Union Territories ( and Puducherry).

Following elections to the state legislative assembly, the governor usually invites the party (or coalition) with a majority of seats to form the government in the state. The governor appoints the , whose council of ministers are collectively responsible to the assembly.

Some Trivia about Chief Ministers in India

 Of the thirty-one possible states and union territories, five Chief Minister of Indian States are women, namely - in , Jayalalithaa in Tamil Nadu, Mamata Banerjee in West Bengal, Mehbooba Mufti in Jammu and Kashmir, and Vasundhara Raje in .  Sikkim'sPawan Kumar Chamling has the longest incumbency, serving since December 1994 (for 21 years, 161 days).  (born 1927) of Punjab is the oldest of all chief ministers in India. 
