President’s Message his fall, the Hofstra Cultural Center and various departments of Hofstra University offer our community an exceptionally Toutstanding schedule of academic conferences, symposia, lectures, performances and other events. The highlights of this fall are, as always, the scholarly conferences and symposia hosted by the Hofstra Cultural Center. Our nationally renowned Department of Religion brings to campus scholars from across the country for The Politics of Religion-Making in October, and in November three days of lectures, screenings, an exhibition and a concert illuminate the cultural influence ofBond, James Bond: The World of 007. In December the Joan and Arnold Saltzman Community Services Center brings together experts to study the timely issue of College Student Mental Health: Psychological, Institutional and Legal Issues. Hofstra’s stages and theaters come alive with compelling and acclaimed productions, from Arthur Miller’s A View From the Bridge to Camille, to an original play written by Hofstra alumnus Elliott Levine commemorating the sacrifices of Vietnam veterans, The Remembered, to a re-telling of the history of Levittown as part of the celebration of our first suburb’s 60th anniversary. Hofstra’s Department of Music presents jazz, chamber and choral music, opera and an orchestra for a full selection of concerts, and the Hofstra University Museum launches a new series of public programs and the exhibition American Perspectives: 1907-1992 in the Emily Lowe Gallery. The lectures we offer our students, faculty and community examine subjects as diverse as education, science, foreign policy, law, religion and culture, and the fourth year of our celebrated “Great Writers, Great Readings” series features novelist Edmund White, Man Booker Prize winner Kiran Desai, and Peruvian poet and novelist Antonio Cisneros. As always, the fall brings celebrated annual traditions, such as the Italian Experience Festival and Homecoming. This year, we welcome back Hofstra alumnus and theatrical legend Joe Corcoran, who brings the New York City cast of his long-running production of Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding to Hofstra for a one-night engagement to benefit student scholarships. As you review the schedule of events, you are sure to find something to enlighten and engage you this fall at Hofstra University. We hope to see you on campus.
