30 • Wednesday June 11, 2014 The Barbados Advocate Zane Maloney, Orry Hunte sweep classes ZANE Maloney and Orry Hunte opened with a clean sweep as the Barbados Karting Association held their first race meet of the year at the redeveloped Bushy Park Racing Circuit over the weekend. Fourteen competitors came out for the race meet and Zane Maloney, driving in the 270 Class, won all four races on the day. The young driver said that the new track was fast and smooth and he enjoyed winning his races. Having to hunt him down all day was Saviola Thomas, who finished second in all four races to end the day with 84 points; while Calvin Bartlett was third with 72 points. Reco Alkins did not have such a good first outing at the new track as mechanical problems plagued him all day. In the 310 Premier Class, which was combined on the track with the X30, Joshua Parris was well on his way to a clean sweep until Nicholas Gill managed to edge him out in the final race. Despite this, Parris was the overall winner of the day with 96 points, while Gill was second with 80. Kyle Zane Maloney (22) leading the 270 Class. Wednesday June 11, 2014 BENEFITS FOR ALL By Kerri Gooding

DEFENSIVE driver train- ing is to the benefit of employees and employers. This is according to the President of the Barbados Road Safety Association. Yesterday, at Co-operators General Insurance in Collymore Rock, Sharmane Roland-Bowen told the media that the benefits redound to both parties. Conducting the workshop, she told the 13 participating em- ployees who drive for work at various entities, “I guarantee you one thing: after you leave here this afternoon, I guarantee you when you go out there and put to practise what you learn on this [Road Safety/ Defensive Driving] programme, your driving is going to be 100 per cent; not only safer,it is going to improve.” Then to the employers, she contended that though defen- sive driver training is only one part of managing road safety at work, “It is going to improve their bottom line.” She asserted, “…Managing your occupational road safety within your company, you would get less accidents, so you have more employees at work be- cause they wont be injured as before, and that leads to loss of productivity; it leads also to higher insurance premiums.” Furthermore, the Vice President of Claims with CGM FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: President of the Barbados Road Safety Association Sharmane Roland-Bowen; Public Relations Officer, Richard Cox; and Vice President of Claims at CGM Gallagher Insurance Brokers Ltd., Tito Gulstone, discuss defensive driving and TRAINING on Page 11 its benefits.
