    Classic Poetry Series Boris Pasternak - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive Boris Pasternak(10 February 1890 - 30 May 1960) Boris Leonidovich Pasternak was a Russian language poet, novelist, and literary translator. In his native Russia, Pasternak's anthology My Sister Life, is one of the most influential collections ever published in the Russian language. Furthermore, Pasternak's theatrical translations of Goethe, Schiller, Pedro Calderón de la Barca, and William Shakespeare remain deeply popular with Russian audiences. Outside Russia, Pasternak is best known for authoring Doctor Zhivago, a novel which spans the last years of Czarist Russia and the earliest days of the Soviet Union. Banned in the USSR, Doctor Zhivago was smuggled to Milan and published in 1957. Pasternak was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature the following year, an event which both humiliated and enraged the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. In the midst of a massive campaign against him by both the KGB and the Union of Soviet Writers, Pasternak reluctantly agreed to decline the Prize. In his resignation letter to the Nobel Committee, Pasternak stated the reaction of the Soviet State was the only reason for his decision. By the time of his death from lung cancer in 1960, the campaign against Pasternak had severely damaged the international credibility of the U.S.S.R. He remains a major figure in Russian literature to this day. Furthermore, tactics pioneered by Pasternak were later continued, expanded, and refined by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn and other Soviet dissidents. <b>Early Life</b> Pasternak was born in Moscow on 10 February, (Gregorian), 1890 (Julian 29 January) into a wealthy Russian Jewish family which had been received into the Russian Orthodox Church.

At the age of 29, Callahan, a ship designer and builder, struck something with his 21-foot sailboat on a return solo voyage across the Atlantic. Callahan had to quickly pack his life raft. A few items – water, food, flares, a spear-gun and sleeping bag – would prove to be the difference in the ensuing 76-day struggle for survival. Through nearly 11 weeks at sea, Callahan survived storms, sharks, holes in the raft, sores, hunger, thirst and the uncertainty of the unknown. His diet would consist of a few dozen fish, birds, a few pounds of barnacles, and other oceanic items. Nine ships failed to see his raft and by the 76th day, his make-shift water still had stopped working. Rescued by fishermen off Guadeloupe, Callahan had lost a third of his body weight and it would be six weeks before he could walk properly again. Today he has been claimed by God’s grace through baptism. Today he has been washed, and he has been welcomed, by God and by us, as Jill and Daniel have renewed their promises of personal faith in the Triune God and Jesus Christ our Lord, and as we have made our promise to support Jacob through the ministries of the church as he grows in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Today Jacob has been launched on a life-long journey. Today his journey of faith has begun: the pilgrimage that will take him through this passing earthly life and on to his eternal destination that is ours in Christ. All this began today in Jacob’s baptism. A few years ago another family stood at this font. Jeramy and Jerri Stephens were presenting their children for baptism. Their oldest son, Riley, was about three years old. As soon as the water splashed over his head, he declared loudly, “I’m wet!” Then as I took him in my arms and we were about to march out through the congregation, I know, I know, your favorite part of the sacrament, little Riley Stephens looked out at you, raised his arm, pointed his forefinger and commanded, “Let’s go!” “I’m wet! Let’s Go.” It is a good summary of what we are about today as a congregation.

In this wordless film, he provides a fine performance as a man stranded at sea alone, fighting for survival on a sinking sailboat. The question is what an old man is doing in a small boat all by himself 1,700 miles off the coast of Sumatra. American Hustle (+ +) is loosely based on the FBI’s ABSCAM operation during the late 1970s and early 1980s--which led to the conviction of a US senator; six members of the House of Representatives; one member of the New Jersey State Senate; members of the Philadelphia City Council; the Mayor of Camden, New Jersey; and an inspector for the Immigration and Naturalization Service. The performances of the ensemble cast are great. Jennifer Lawrence is especially funny. August Osage County (+ +) is a film that will make you appreciate your own dysfunctional family more because it can’t be as bad as the one presided over by the matriarch played so brilliantly by Meryl Streep. Calvary (+ + +) is one of the best depressing movies I’ve seen in a long time. Brendon Gleeson is outstanding as an Irish priest whose life is threatened by a parishioner during confession. Faith is a salient theme of the movie. One of the main messages is that many of us spend too much time on sin and not enough on virtue.
