Message from the President You may sometimes wonder what the Council does!

Well they are busy, at the HASANZ conference a group got together to work on a business plan for the Society. As part of this plan a number of working groups are being developed covering mentoring, future training, certification, communication, memberships and the HASANZ professional register.

This keeps us all very busy and you will see updates around these initiatives over the coming months and even years, yes we are planning ahead.

It was good to see a number of members at the HASANZ conference and our stand looked good and generated interest and discussion. So a heartfelt thanks to the volunteers who manned this throughout.

And finally from me, congratulations to Robert Murray who was selected for the NZOHS spon- sored attendance at the AIOH conference this year. This year it was a close run thing so we have made the decision that there would be a runner up so congratulations to Kerry Cheung who will be attending the CES days.

OHAG Corner

OHAG stands for the Occupational Health Advisory Group. OHAG is a group of the country’s leading experts on occupational health assembled to advise WorkSafe New Zealand about how to help protect people from work-related illness and disease. Suzanne Broadbent is one of the members of the OHAG group and here is an update from her on the OHAG: “The group has been pleased with progress made in the focus on Occupational Health. We are concerned about some more recent changes in structure. Over the last couple of meetings OHAG has looked at the processes for reviewing and updated exposure standards, WorkSafe's Clean Air programme, proposed changes to the Hazardous Sub- stances Regulations and WorkSafe's ability to access and analyse occupational health da- ta. has a strong voice within the group with myself, Dave McLean, Ian Laird and Jim McLeod all being vocal about assessment and control of exposure.”

Not much to report South Island from the South Is- Column land for this issue. In the picture on the right, our two South Island col- umnists Peter Sim- mons and Bridgette Jennings manning the NZOHS stand during the HASANZ Conference.

HASANZ update

21 September 2016 - CHAIR’S UPDATE TO MEMBERS

The good vibrations from HASANZ CONFERENCE 2016 continue to resonate. What an outstanding success it was! More than 400 people attended the con- ference. I think the high turnout shows that workplace health and safety pro- fessionals are hungry for events to share knowledge and experience with their peers. Te Papa proved to be a fantastic venue and there was a real buzz about the place for the entire conference. A telling sign was that there was still a full house on Friday afternoon, unlike the usual post-lunch exodus.

I hope that you were able to come and are now putting into practice some of the learning you took away from the conference and working your new contacts. A key aim of our conference was to establish a national community of practice for health and safety professionals. I think we accomplished that.

The formal evaluation responses are still coming in, but I want to share with you some of the unsolic- ited feedback HASANZ has received:

Fantastic event and overall wouldn’t have missed it for anything

What a great conference. Hats off to HASANZ.

Great inaugural conference with thought provoking speakers. Have absorbed a lot of new ideas to take back to my workplace and great to find other professionals looking at a collaborative future in health AND safety.

Informative, thought-provoking, affirming, poignant and inspirational. Awesome conference – thanks HA- SANZ.

Great to meet old & new friends and learn new tips and tricks!

Nice to have the H in H&S highlighted.

A remarkable two days. Please pass on my congratulations to your team on a fantastic forum with a great format.

I am tired but inspired – thanks HASANZ.

My challenge to delegates was to make HASANZ CONFERENCE 2016 an action fest, not just a talk fest and their feedback suggests this was achieved.

Together we explored: the role of the new health and safety professional health’s importance alongside safety; and the what, the why and the how of workplace health and safety.

Heartfelt thanks to our sponsors, exhibitors and to everyone who came and contributed to two re- markable days that really did illuminate, challenge and inspire.

I also want to thank our member associations for the support they have shown HASANZ in helping to host our first conference. This was a big ask for a small and relatively new organisation that depends largely on volunteers. I particularly want to single out the members of our Conference Committee: Judy Currie, NZ Occupational Health Nurses Association representative, and Greg Dearsly, the new National Manager of the NZ Institute of Safety Management. Human Factors and Ergonomics Society of NZ’s Marion Edwin took on the important role of overseeing the paper peer review process. Thank you all. Issue 9 | October 2016

HASANZ update - Cont.

HASANZ CONFERENCE 2016 presentations and photos are on our conference website. Papers are pub- lished with the permission of the authors and include a booklet of extended abstracts of peer reviewed papers. We want to make relevant information widely available to our members. With this in mind, we are looking at opportunities for profession-related learning that builds on popular topics at the confer- ence. So you don’t have to wait until our next conference in 2018 for more.

With the dust hardly settled on the conference, we are now turning our attention to the HASANZ Reg- ister of Workplace Health and Safety Professionals. Right now, we’re sourcing a software supplier and the successful vendor will determine the timing for delivering the register next year. We’ll then be driving development forward, working with you to make the register a valued and demanded re- source.

With new expectations on businesses to improve health and safety outcomes, they are seeking proven advisers with expertise and relevant experience in their industry, and the register will help find them. That’s why only individuals will be listed on the register – it’s the competence of the person that mat- ters, not the reputation of their firm. Also, you must be an accredited professional member of a HA- SANZ member association. So if you’re on the register, businesses can be confident that you have met the required competency standard and that your professional association governs your behaviour, holding you accountable to a code of ethics through an established complaints and disciplinary pro- cess.

We believe that, once it is in place and trusted by businesses, the HASANZ Register will be a catalyst for building your profession, lifting competence and capability across the sector. HASANZ will en- hance the value of workplace health and safety professionals to businesses in a real and very practical way.

More action, less talk – I’m all for it!
