Chopwell and Rowlands Gill ward is located in the West of along with four other wards – , and Greenside, Ryton, Crookhill and Stella, and Winlaton and . It is bounded by Derwentside and Tynedale to the south west and is rural with large open spaces and woodland.

Chopwell and Rowlands Gill both contain a supermarket whilst smaller settlements have their own shops. Regular bus services are available, however, journeys are long due to the remoteness of some villages.

Housing is of mixed age and tenure with over two thirds being privately owned and around a quarter being owned by the Council.
