Kirby, S.J., is a professor of moral theology and the religious Superior of the Jesuit community at Le Moyne College. D Father Kirby’s legacy at Le Moyne stretches back to 1959, when he enrolled in the College as a freshman before entering the Society of Jesus a year later. He returned to campus in 1976 as a faculty member in the Department of Religious Studies. His focus became working with his faculty colleagues to discover how educators could awaken career-oriented students to the full potential of a liberal arts education and thus revitalize their commitment to faith, justice and social responsibility. Father Kirby co-founded the Center for the Advancement of Values Education. His most recent book, Compass for Uncharted Lives: A Model for Values Education, reflects the fruit of years of experience in leading faculty workshops on values education both nationally and internationally. A gifted and inspiring educator, Father Kirby has taught courses such as Corporate Responsibility, Catholic Social Teaching, Christian Ethics and the Study of Religion. He inspires hope, ignites continued on back imagination, and instills a love of learning in each of his students. His goal is to assist his students in recognizing and understanding the importance of the moral and faith dimension in their personal and professional lives and to assist them to become compassionate agents of social change. From 2014 until 2017, Father Kirby held the Robert A. Mitchell, S.J. Chair in Christian Wisdom at Le Moyne. His own research explores forgiveness and reconciliation and, as the Mitchell Chair, he sponsored public lectures on “Divorce and Re-Marriage: The Role of Faith” and “Forgiveness in Relationships.” Beyond the Le Moyne campus, Father Kirby serves on the boards of the Spiritual Renewal Center and Syracuse Area Middle East Dialogue Group. He regularly assists local parishes and students and alumni by celebrating weddings, baptisms and funerals, providing comfort in times of hope and joy, sadness and sorrow. Father Kirby’s 43 years of dedication to the Jesuit and Ignatian mission at Le Moyne and throughout higher education is indeed a rare commodity. He is like the merchant who has found the pearl of great value and has risked his life to give it to others. He has tried to live the words of Pope Francis: “To educate is an act of love, it is to give life. Also love is demanding, and it calls for using the best resources for awakening passion and to begin with patience together with young people.”.

Ponurý, chytrý i groteskně humorný snímek nás zavádí do USA 70. let. • The Aesthetics of Cinematic Depression
1 Acknowledgements I wish to express my sincere gratitude to my supervisor prof. Asbjørn Grønstad for insightful conversations on the subject of the thesis, and constructive input throughout the writing process. I would also like to thank Mathias S. Lillestøl for proof reading and invaluable emotional support. Abstract The following dissertation investigates whether Lars von Trier’s film representations of depression go beyond medical and social conventions related to the illness, in order to underline the complex character of its suffering and causes. To contextualise cinematic depression, the first chapter offers a historical summary of movie portrayals of the illness against the backdrop of the social and medical fields. The main corpus explores the way the motif of depression transpires in von Trier’s traumatic aesthetics to express the filmmaker’s vision and ethical beliefs, with a special emphasis on his latest trilogy – Antichrist (2009), Melancholia (2011) and Nymphomaniac vol. I and vol. II (2013) - known as “Depression trilogy”. The thesis’ ethical inquiry unravels within the ethical frames established by essential theories that focus also on the viewers’ possible reactions and attitudes regarding depression.
