    Improving Security Through Egalitarian Binary Recompilation David Williams-King Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2021 © 2021 David Williams-King All Rights Reserved Abstract Improving Security Through Egalitarian Binary Recompilation David Williams-King In this thesis, we try to bridge the gap between which program transformations are possible at source-level and which are possible at binary-level. While binaries are typically seen as opaque artifacts, our binary recompiler Egalito (ASPLOS 2020) enables users to parse and modify stripped binaries on existing systems. Our technique of binary recompilation is not robust to errors in disassembly, but with an accurate analysis, provides near-zero transformation overhead. We wrote several demonstration security tools with Egalito, including code randomization, control-flow integrity, retpoline insertion, and a fuzzing backend. We also wrote Nibbler (ACSAC 2019, DTRAP 2020), which detects unused code and removes it. Many of these features, including Nibbler, can be combined with other defenses resulting in multiplicatively stronger or more effective hardening. Enabled by our recompiler, an overriding theme of this thesis is our focus on deployable software transformation. Egalito has been tested by collaborators across tens of thousands of Debian programs and libraries. We coined this term egalitarian in the context of binary security. Simply put, an egalitarian analysis or security mechanism is one that can operate on itself (and is usually more deployable as a result). As one demonstration of this idea, we created a strong, deployable defense against code reuse attacks.

Besides, playing songs, most of the time is an individual acting as a hobby and many song listeners do not have a common platform to share their hobby with others. By putting it on the cloud, the internal storage capacity can be reduced and the chance to share the common hobby with others is available. This paper aims to present the development of a Cloud-Based Media Player (CBMP) to ease the users in managing their song files and sharing with others. The CBMP utilizes a website as the main controller and connects to the Microsoft Azure Services to host the music database. Two separate sections are created for the user to upload and download their songs as private and share sections. Accordingly, users can choose the favored section they want to access. Not only features to upload and download songs are provided, but the CMBP also provides a search function that enables users to search songs in both different to make a search process faster. Due to latency in the cloud services, the suggested song format for CMBP is.MP3 files. The .MP3 files promote better compression rate than .MP4. Besides, .MP4 has higher latency that makes users waiting longer for processing the songs.

Ports extend the base OS functionality and make sure you get something done or, simply, put a smile on your face. Come along for the ride, maybe you’ll find something new. ears ago, when I began my Unix journey as a university freshman, installers were a lot simpler. Getting to a desktop at the end was not the default. In fact, I struggled a lot at the beginning to get one going, and when I did, the computer I had back then did not have enough power to run it. So, I stayed in the terminal for a long time. This did Ynot turn me away, as I could already do a lot more than on DOS. At least I had misc/mc to get me a little bit more than white text on a black background. Later, I did get a working desktop running on X11R6. Nowadays, the installers are much bet- ter and often default to a graphical point-and-click interface. But when that happened, I was switching to FreeBSD where a curses-like installer is still the default. My hard-learned tricks in the non-GUI world proved useful. The FreeBSD handbook had me starting up a working desk- top much faster than my stunts on other distributions. I still use a minimal desktop environment because, most of the time, I need to open a terminal to be productive.
