“Melba is an Australian label of fragrant distinction” (MusicWeb International)

CEO REPORT

For The Melba Foundation, 2009-10 has been a year of success on many fronts. First and foremost, the Foundation continues to deliver unparalleled new career opportunities for Australian artists through the quality and innovation of its releases.

“Whilst I have recorded many CD’s with other labels throughout and overseas, the opportunity to be supported and recorded with such magnificent sound quality, presented in a brilliant way, distributed throughout the world, reviewed by all the leading magazines, websites and newspapers covering CD’s in the world, and above all, to work with such a supportive Australian company turned the experience into a life changing opportunity….I have personally received the best and most influential reviews of my life since the release of my first disc with Melba, and I am equally confident in saying that many other fine and until recently unheralded Australian musicians can say the same for themselves.”

Paul Dean, Artistic Director, Australian National Academy of Music and Melba artist

“ These recordings have provided an unmatched opportunity for Orchestra Victoria to enhance its international profile. This, in turn, will make it easier for the orchestra to attract high quality conductors, thereby further developing the orchestra’s range and standards. With Melba recordings, it is not necessary for Australians to plead for attention that their work is “world class” or “global cutting edge”. International critics do that for us. Reviews in the leading music publications have been highly positive. We are particularly fortunate that we have in Australia (in Melba recordings) a recording label with the highest standards of professionalism and imagination.”

Jo Beaumont, Artistic Director, Orchestra Victoria

The market excitement generated by the release of Turbulent Heart, a world premiere recording of works by Vierne featuring Steve Davislim and the Queensland Symphony conducted by Guillaume Tourniaire has taken Melba to new highs of international awareness and acclaim. It was awarded with the Editor’s Choice awards in three European magazines and 23 ecstatic reviews. Melba is Australia’s classical label of excellence and a calling card for our artists and music culture around the world.

Seven recordings were undertaken this year and four were released, including two featuring emerging artists. Releases included J.S. Bach Organ Sonatas, featuring the incomparable Christopher Wrench; Turbulent Heart with tenor Steve Davislim and The Queensland Orchestra conducted by Guillaume Tourniaire; Beloved of the Gods, featuring the young artists of the Tinalley Quartet and the Dean, Emmerson, Dean Trio. Also released was Volupté, a recording of viola music featuring Roger Benedict accompanied by the exciting young pianist Timothy Young.

These releases were supported by launch and performance events in Brisbane and Melbourne, attended by special guests Bruce Beresford, Richard Bonynge Cheryl Barker, Michael Shmith and Guillaume Tourniaire and featuring performances by Tinalley String Quartet, Paul Dean, Timothy Young, Suzanne Johnston, Ray Chen, Kristian Winther, Benjamin Martin, Kevin Power, Joshua Bloom and Rosamund Illing.

The total of 177 media reviews and features achieved this year exceeded forecast and overall sales targets have been met with sales revenues growing steadily. On the digital delivery front, the sound quality of portable devices continues to improve, although it still has some way to go to replicate the full sonic experience of a Melba CD. Until these sound quality issues are addressed, physical CD’s will continue to constitute the vast majority of Melba’s sales. Nonetheless, Melba’s entire catalogue was available for digital download this year as Melba is determined to be at the forefront of digital delivery. Melba continues to have the most extensive international distribution of any Australian label.

The Foundation has worked to address the issue of reducing core operational funding from the Australian Government with a renewed effort in fundraising and marketing – an effort that has been successful. Our wonderful Patrons and Benefactors have extended their commitment to the Foundation and development revenue is significantly higher this year. Important events were hosted by Lady Potter, Mrs Jeanne Pratt, ANZ and at Government House Melbourne and Brisbane.

However, in order to maintain output at an average of at least seven quality recordings per year – the level of activity at which Melba’s market presence can be of benefit to Australian artists – core operational funding is required.

Melba’s flexibility and innovation in the face of rapid technological and market changes have propelled it to a leading position in the international marketplace. It is delivering real benefit for Australian artists. This could not have been achieved without the support of the Australian Government and a strong family of Patrons and Benefactors. We thank our hard working Board of Directors and staff and look forward with optimism to the year ahead.

He has made the history books by recording more records than any other pianist ever – 130 CDs – and he has a following internationally. He falls into the category of distinguished Australian artist who lives abroad – he has lived in London for 30 years. 2 Arcadia Lost A recording of part of SSO’s October concert series of music by Vaughan Williams. The Lark Ascending & Flos Campi; and Britten’s Sinfonia da Requiem ; together with Williams’ On Wenlock Vaughan Williams & Edge . Benjamin Britten Vaughan Williams’ Lark Ascending is redolent with the intense yearning of the urbanized (industrial-revolution) English people for an idealized pastoral age, a simpler time just out of reach. ‘from London Calling’ The lark’s swirling flight in the summer haze is masterfully evoked by Michael Dauth’s glistening (Recorded Oct 2009) solo violin. Symphony Orchestra The Song of Solomon, one of the greatest love poems of all literature, is at the heart of Vaughan Mark Wigglesworth conductor Williams’ Flos Campi. The SSO’s Principal violist Roger Benedict gives a glorious voice to this Michael Dauth violin most passionate piece for viola and orchestra. Roger Benedict viola Benjamin Britten wrote his brutal Sinfonia da Requiem as a commission from the British council, ironically to commemorate 2600 years of Japan’s Mikado dynasty. The conflict of the ‘On Wenlock Edge’ circumstances of the pieces’ composition roar out of the music, especially in the opening movement “Dies Irae” Mark Wigglesworth and the SSO give an explosive performance of this (Recorded: Feb 2010) remarkable piece Steve Davislim tenor Benjamin Martin, piano In On Wenlock Edge yearning is coloured by the horrors of the British (soldiers’) experience in the Hamer Quartet Boer war. Steve Davislim and the Hamer Quartet bring a dramatic truth to the stories in this cycle of songs.

3 Stravinsky: Diversions Rising star of the violin Ray Chen , winner of the Queen Elizabeth International Music Competition, makes his debut recording on Melba Recordings, accompanied by another fast- emerging Australian talent, the pianist Timothy Young , on Diversions, a disc of scintillating Ray Chen, violin chamber music that presents Stravinsky at his most entertaining, his spirit brimming with optimism and bravura. Timothy Young, piano The pieces—Suite after themes, fragments and pieces by Giambattista Pergolesi, Duo Recorded: Jan 2010 concertante, Divertimento, ‘Russian Maiden’s Song’ from the opera Mavra and the ‘Danse russe’ from Petrushka—are perfect vehicles to showcase Chen’s violinistic bel canto, his luminous tone and his off-the-scale technique, all to be expected given his competition pedigree. But Stravinsky’s music also provides Chen with the perfect vehicle to demonstrate his genius for vivid musical story-telling. This recording marks Chen as an exciting musical personality as well as a remarkable virtuoso. While Stravinsky’s violin and piano writing of this music is never less than virtuosic, the performers toss off these technical difficulties with the greatest bravura. The impression we are left with is of the most vivid musical storytelling and youthful joy. Virtuoso performances of the golden age of the great Russian violin school of Leopold Auer (Heifitz, Zimbalist, Elman et al.) could be characterised as possessing a monumental magnitude of technique, a beauty of singing cantilena, a radiant and ravishing tone and most importantly the ability to tell a spellbinding story in music. By this description Ray Chen is truly a virtuoso of the old schoo 4 Saint-Saëns Ballet Music Incandescent French conductor Guillaume Tourniaire continues a collaboration with Orchestra Victoria which is propelling it into the international spotlight. What began with the recording in Orchestra Victoria, 2008 of the opera Hélène, written for Nellie Melba by Saint-Saëns, is now followed with a Guillaume Tourniaire recording of the lost ballet music from his rare operas Les Barbares , Henri VIII , Ascanio and Étienne Marcel . Recorded Feb’10 This is Melba Recordings’ seventh collaboration with Orchestra Victoria in their ten-year relationship. These include three recordings conducted by Richard Bonynge, one with Simone Young and one with Barry Tuckwell: all important Australians. The ballet music from these operas are highpoints, diversions and Saint-Saëns at his best—the Saint-Saëns of Carnival of the Animals and the Bacchanale from Samson and Delilah —with Saint-Saëns unashamedly providing an entertainment for the opera audience and a chance for the orchestra to shine.

5 Tribute to Dame Joan CHERYL BARKER'S relationship with Melba Recordings stretches back almost to the label’s Hammond beginning. Puccini ≡Passion, her 2003 collection of arias with Richard Bonynge conducting Orchestra Victoria – was only Melba’s sixth release since launching three years earlier. Cheryl Barker, Guillaume Tourniaire, Now, the much-in-demand Australian-born soprano has returned to record her long-overdue follow QSO up – A Tribute to Dame Joan Hammond. It’s a disc, she says, “that feels as if it’s been a long time coming” and which takes her back to another beginning – of her own career. Recorded Mar’10 "I studied with Joan Hammond at the Victorian College of the Arts, where she was Head of Voice. On first impressions she was formidable in a way, had a certain air about her that was a little bit frightening. But actually, when you were one of her pupils, she was fantastic.” When Barker left the VCA, she remained under the wing of her renowned mentor , who, she discovered, “let her guard down in private and you got to know the real Joan Hammond. In a class situation she was very much the Diva, but in a one-to-one lesson she had a wicked sense of humour and you could have a laugh with her”. She sings arias by Verdi, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, Offenbach and Purcell with Guillaume Tourniaire conducting the QSO and Timothy Young accompanying songs on the piano.

6 George Boyle Exciting Australian pianist Timothy Young whose Melba debut on “Volupte" with Roger Timothy Young, piano Benedict has attracted extravagant praise, is making his debut solo recording with Melba. He introduces to the world the music of George Frederick Boyle, a great Australian Recorded Mar’10 performer, teacher and composer whose previously neglected works have proved to be exciting revelations. Boyle was born in Sydney in 1886. As a 14 year old virtuoso he made concert tours throughout Australia and New Zealand. assisted him to travel to in 1905 to study with Busoni. On Busoni's recommendation he was appointed to replace Ernest Hutcheson as head of the piano department at Baltimore's Peabody Conservatory. After 12 years at Peabody, Boyle was appointed to the Curtis Institute and in 1927 to the of Music where he remained until 1940. A stroke forced him to cease teaching and relearn how to play the piano, which he did, and resumed teaching and playing until his death in 1948. continued overleaf …

Boyle’s articles on the art of piano playing appeared in the Etude magazine in the late 1920s. The Philadelphia Record said of Boyle; ”He occupies an exceptionally brilliant position in American musical life. As a composer of striking individuality, he has achieved an international reputation; as a pianist, he is unquestionably one of the most interesting of his period; and as a teacher, he has gathered about him a group of students and admirers whose enthusiasm recalls the vivid stories of the followers of Liszt. He is the sort of inspiration American students stand most in need of and in this capacity his gifts are priceless. His power of expression amounts to positive genius” 7 Nance Grant (re-release) Melba has licensed several recordings from the ABC which demonstrate the great artistry of this exceptional Australian soprano singing Wagner, Strauss, Mendelssohn, Donizetti, Beethoven, Mozart, Hageman and Grieg with several Australian orchestras and renowned Australian pianist Geoffrey Parsons. After winning the Mobile Quest (1957) and the ABC Instrumental and Vocal Competition (1960) Nance Grant sang throughout Australia in concerts for the ABC. In 1981 she received the Bayreuth Opera Award, an Opera Foundation scholarship to study with Professor Kaiser Breme in Germany. Major engagements early in her career included the official opening at the Sydney Opera House. She made her debut with the Australian Opera in 1972 as the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavelier . Her final appearance was in 1991.
