THE AUSTRALIA-UNITED STATES FREE TRADE AGREEMENT | 1 AMBASSADOR’S FOREWORD

The fifteenth anniversary of the Australia-United States Free Trade Agreement (AUSFTA) in 2020 provided an opportunity to celebrate the strength and vitality of the Australia-United States economic relationship, underpinned by AUSFTA.

Strong economic links between Australia and the United States make sense. Our relationship is built on a foundation of common values and similar institutions that make it easier to trade and cooperate with each other. AUSFTA built on this foundation to remove historic impediments to trade and investment, supporting innovation, jobs and prosperity in both nations.

Investment is the heart of our economic relationship, with the United States both the number one destination for Australian investment abroad, and Australia’s number one source of foreign investment. Likewise, in 2019, Australia was the ninth largest direct foreign investor in the United States, despite a population of only 25 million people (55th in the world). Valued at US$1.3 trillion in 2019, two-way investment has almost tripled under AUSFTA. Australia’s Foreign Minister Marise Payne watches on as the keel of the future USS Canberra (Littoral Combat Ship 30) is laid at Austal USA’s Mobile, Alabama shipyard. I applaud the work of more than 420 Australian parent companies with 1500-plus registered entities in the US that are flying the flag of Australian ingenuity and enterprise, and I welcome the over 2,000 US businesses operating in Australia. By tapping into Australia’s highly As countries the world over face the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic and its economic educated, tech-savvy workforce, they bring our peoples ever closer. fallout, as well as address the challenges of climate change, AUSFTA provides a bedrock of certainty and predictability to US and Australian traders and investors – and provides a Our strong and longstanding military alliance – which we celebrate in 2021 as we recognise platform for bilateral cooperation to meet shared challenges in the months and years to come. 70 years of the ANZUS Treaty – means that, as nations, we have each other’s backs. But the “Mateship” we share with the United States reaches well beyond our mutual security. Our I commend this publication to you, as evidence of both the strength and promise of this most economic relationship, and the people links it supports, extends our Mateship to nearly every important of economic relationships. aspect of our economies – from space industries to recycled packaging, critical minerals to cars and parts, financial services to medical technologies. The case studies in this booklet provide a snapshot of the diversity and strength of our economic ties and the friendship and solidarity those ties support.

That same friendship and solidarity are reflected in our longstanding relationship with the American Australian Association (AAA). The AAA, and its President, Ambassador John Berry, The Hon. Arthur Sinodinos AO have been great champions of our Mateship values and campaign. We have worked closely Australian Ambassador to the United States together on many initiatives, including G’Day USA, and are very pleased to be partnering with the AAA on this booklet.
