The Patient: The True Story of a Rare Illness spent on hospital wards is very accurately portrayed, especially adjusting toward life and how your world shrinks, distractions are few, boredom stretches endlessly and one becomes inevitably introspective. It contains his observations about what severe illness really is and about his struggle with both the mental as well as the physical difficulties of recovery. Many people suffer the pain and indignities of medical treatment; but few have written about it with quite such alarming vividness or clarity. Patient: The True Story of a Rare Illness read this off the back of his wife's memoir Tracey Thorn's 'Bedsit Disco Queen' and am more enamored than ever with this quirky, deep-thinking, artistic couple. Watt is such a responsible, deft writer that you feel straightaway you're in good hands. Sep 21, Fiona rated it really liked Patient: The True Story of a Rare Illness Shelves:memoir. An apparently well-adjusted couple since the early '80s, Thorn and Watt have generally had to pretend quite a bit to come up with their lovelorn plaints. Sometime around early January ofthe author, a member of the band Everything But The Girl, started to feel terrible. People ask what was it like, and I say yes, of course it was dramatic and graphic and all that stuff, but at times it was just kind of comic and strange. Sometime around early Janu This is one of those books I've wanted to read for a long time. Preferred contact method Email Text message. It was fascinating. He provides us with various love stories and family narratives as he is routinely visited and cared for by Tracey Thorn as well as his Mother and yet the pain and fear experienced by his Father, therefore establishing a bit of disconnect and ultimately, a renewal was beautifully emotional without growing maudlin. In the summer ofon the eve of an American tour, Ben Watt, one half of the Billboard -topping pop duo Everything But The Girl, was taken to a London hospital complaining of chest pain. If I moved, it seemed to scrape against the surface. I look forward to reading his next work. Ben Watt is a brilliant writer. Patient: The True Story of a Rare Illness was compelling and very urgently told. At least in terms of narrative exigencies, Watt is fortunate to get shuttled from room to room and for these rooms to be wards, where he can watch analogous dramas unfold around other patients' beds. Friend Reviews. The picture of what the home was like to her while he was in the hospital was moving take away lists, meals for one, dirty dishes for one in the kitchen Ben Watt's Patient: The True Story Of A Rare Illness is a swift, fully immersive and downright harrowing memoir, expertly delivering the experience Watt himself underwent as a hospital patient over several months in as he suffered, nearly perished and ultimately recovered from the rare auto-immune disease known as Churg-Strauss syndrome, a condition that robbed Watt of most of his small intestine. I respect Ben Watt and I'm glad he wrote the book. It's not how it seems from the inside. An author as well as musician, Watt made this sad and sometimes dreary tale of his world shrinking to a few feet of hospital space quite interesting and powerful. There's a husband irritated by his wife's incessant knitting; another fastidiously reluctant admittee who soils his new, clean pajamas almost instantly, forcing him to adopt the state-sanctioned uniform of his comrades; a Patient: The True Story of a Rare Illness drug addict, his chest ravaged by abscesses, who is gently tended by his parents; and a fated man with a chronic cough who is quietly wheeled out while Watt is out of the room, only to be replaced by another patient later in the day. Showing Tim Dumble. He is perhaps most well-known for his twenty-year career in alt-pop duo Everything But The Girl Related Books. It was a very inspiring story. Christine Feret-Fleury. Want to Patient: The True Story of a Rare Illness Currently Reading Read. This is a painfully honest and extremely well-written account of unexpected, unexplained serious illness in a young man and his diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. I felt rotten in my guts. His description of the physical sensations of illness allowed me to be inside his body with him, experiencing the often hallucinatory effects of sickness and medication: "Inside my head I felt the tissue was too small for the space it occupied. He hasn't eaten by mouth in a very long time at this point, so food is a curiosity to him. Books by Ben Watt. He lives in north London with his wife Tracey Thorn and their three children. Watt's clinical condition may have been virtually unique, but the surroundings in which it was treated grow increasingly universal. This book succeeds on so many levels. They kept me in for two and half months. It wasn't clear in the book. It's beautifully written, in spare but evocative language that captures the rawness and strange detachment of serious illness. Jul 17, Roger rated it really liked it. But losing a lover to illness—even temporarily —means falling prey to an infidelity beyond the grasp of either person. The thing is you can read this Patient: The True Story of a Rare Illness not feel sorry for him. Over 20 years since the publication of this book, Ben Watt has more than continued to live and thrive as he has become a parent to now adult children with Thorn, he has also firmly established a solo career in music through his own albums as well as his work as a Producer and DJ and he has continued his literary life as an author--and what an exceedingly gifted writer. • Ben Watt Biography
BEN WATT BIOGRAPHY Ben Watt firs appeared in London in 1981 as a young nineteen-year-old experimental songwriter-singer-guitarist. 1982’s 5-tracK EP Summer into Winter featured Robert Wyatt. His early worK culminated in his sparse atmospheric debut album North Marine Drive (1983, UK Independent Album Chart, No 9). In 1983 he put solo plans on hold to perform and write full-time with Tracey Thorn in their recently-formed duo Everything But The Girl. The band stayed active until 2000, delivering twelve UK Top 40 singles, two platinum and seven gold UK Top 20 albums and one gold US album. 1995’s global hit Missing reached No. 2 on the US Billboard Top 100. The 1994 album Amplified Heart and the 1996 album WalKing Wounded - for which Watt was nominated as Best Producer at the Q Awards - each sold over a million copies. The duo’s career was dramatically interrupted for a year in 1992 by Watt’s drawn- out hospitalisation and near-death experience with a rare auto-immune disease Churg-Strauss Syndrome (aka EGPA) with which he now still lives - a period documented in his acclaimed 1996 memoir, Patient (New YorK Times Notable BooK of the Year; shortlisted for the Esquire Non-Fiction Award; Sunday Times BooK of the Year) Everything But The Girl quit on a high in 2000. Watt moved out of the mainstream into record production (Beth Orton), remixing (inc Sade, Maxwell, Meshell Ndegeocello), DJing and clubland. He co-launched the influential London day-night Sunday party and compilation series Lazy Dog (1998-2003) and was creative director, resident DJ and part-owner at west London night clubs Cherry Jam and Neighbourhood (2001-2003) before starting his own award-winning electronic record label and club night Buzzin' Fly in 2003.

ROMANY AND TOM: A MEMOIR PDF, EPUB, EBOOK Ben Watt | 368 pages | 15 Dec 2015 | Bloomsbury Publishing PLC | 9781408845103 | English | London, United Kingdom Romany and Tom: A Memoir PDF Book Musician, songwriter and author Ben Watt not only experiences both these issues but writes about them in his memoir Romany and Tom. It rang so many bells with me we are almost exactly the same age, and many of the same concerns have braided themselves around my life in the last few months and years that I downloaded it as soon as we got to the hotel, and began reading it that night. Watt's parents were, perhaps, more revolutionary, more tempestuous, than most there again, perhaps not; perhaps the key difference was that they acted on their impulses where most didn't - having risked so much to be together, they appear in some respects to have been bound together until the end, whatever that end might be. At no stage is this book light and easy to read - indeed, the majority of the book is extremely harrowing given the various challenges the family had to face over the years. How do we get from there to here, from teenaged revolutionaries to middle-aged parents with cars and mortgages and teenaged revolutionaries of our own? A joy to read even in the moments of despair. That he went on to arguably outshine both his parents is a theme that might have been explored more in the book, as might the circle of fading fame, alcoholism and mental illness. The best book I read last year was by a musician from my formative years about her life and her unexpectedly vivid insights into the human condition Clothes, Clothes, Clothes.
