Last Sunday morning a band of assorted folk set out on a walk across the base of Mohnenfluh in the Bregenzerwald. The 2,544m mountain is at the centre of a high dilution of sculpture, over a wide and varied field of alpine meadows that catch the slanting sunlight and seem to be made of a deep velvet; gypsum sinks that hide micro-climates of secret ferns where greedy flies suck the nectar from the heavy heads of cow parsley; bright streams that run from the ice-melt into shining falls that turn the grey schist black; deep forests of high-reaching pine; and among the craggy heights the occasional glimpse of ibex or wild sheep. It was a bright morning, the sky a deep blue, the air clear and completely still, given depth by the dull clonking of cow-bells on the udder-stretched alpage-grazers: subtly beige-shaded Braunvieh who with their big brown eyes occasionally left off their chomping to stare at us. High above are the peaks – occasionally shadowed by cloud but mostly sharply outlined against the infinite blue. -

Event Horizon will mark Gormley’s United States public art debut; a milestone for an artist whose work has garnered worldwide acclaim over the past 25 years; as well as the first time Mad. Sq. Art has exhibited works outside of Madison Square Park. Levinson BY VIVIAN MARINO | APRIL 25, 2012 | THE NEW YORK TIMES Mr. Levinson, 63, is the chairman and chief of the L & L Holding Company, which is based in New York and owns and operates five million square feet of office space in the Manhattan area. Its portfolio includes 200 Fifth Avenue, once called the International Toy Center, and 425 Park Avenue, which is about to be redeveloped. He co-founded the company in 2000 and was a vice chairman of CB Richard Ellis until 2005. Interview conducted and condensed by Vivian Marino Q. What’s your take on the Manhattan office market these days? A. Our outlook is positive. We’re seeing a gradual improvement in our economy. We see a supply-constrained market — in fact, the last 10 years has seen the lowest amount of development in 110 years. We’re getting an improvement in the vacancy rates. And in 2011 rents over all in New York have gone up 11 percent. So business has gotten better. It was a difficult time after Lehman collapsed in 2008. Q. Lehman was one of your capital partners at the time, at 200 Fifth. A. I’m very proud to say that every building we had in 2008 we still have today. In fact, during that period of time, a lot of institutions came to us for assistance. Buildings that had been foreclosed on we took over and operated them until they were able to decide what they wanted to do. Q. Are you working on many projects right now? A. -

MARGARET IVERSEN - STILL STANDING From ANTONY GORMLEY: STILL STANDING, Fontanka in association with State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg, Russia, 2011 On the face of it, Antony Gormley's intervention in the State Hermitage Museum's gallery of classical statuary is a simple one: remove the statues from their plinths and raise the level of the floor so that they seem to stand on the floor rather than on their bases. At a stroke, Olympian gods and mythical heroes are brought down to earth. Although the gesture may be simple, its implications are many and far-reaching. We no longer gaze up in awe at the remote, idealised forms on their plinths or pedestals. Rather, they inhabit a space continuous with our own. Like fallen angels, they are now in our midst so we view them quite differently. We now see more clearly that they are material things made of stone, some pieced together from fragments. Once clothed in the subtle drapery of aesthetic distance, the semi-clad figures now look naked, exposed. Originally arranged around the periphery of the gallery, they are now free-standing statues spaced at intervals around the gallery, much like the living visitors. Also, their autonomy as discrete works of art is compromised, for now we walk between and around the figures which have become responsive to us and their neighbours. Gormley's playfulness is evident in some of his arrangements: for example, a diminutive Eros is positioned so that he looks with an oedipal mixture of fear and desire at a powerful Athena. Without their plinths, which set them apart like frames around paintings, the single figures coalesce to form a complex array that we must negotiate visually and physically. -
