Prince Ali Yusuf, Hereditary Sheikh of Ramat, whose great liberalizing experiment is coming to chaos, knows that he must prepare for the day of his exile. He asks his pilot and school friend, Bob Rawlinson, to care for a packet of jewels. Rawlinson does so, hiding them among the possessions of his niece Jennifer Sutcliffe, who is bound for Meadowbank. For at the end of the evening one of them is dead - choked by a cocktail that contained no trace of poison. Predictable, says Hercule Poirot, the great detective. But entirely unpredictable is that he can find absolutely no motive for murder. A far-from-warm welcome greets Hercule Poirot as he arrives for lunch at Lucy Angkatell's country house. A man lies dying by the swimming pool, his blood dripping into the water. His wife stands over him, holding a revolver. As Poirot investigates, he begins to realize that beneath the respectable surface lies a tangle of family secrets and everyone becomes a suspect. Beautiful young Elinor Carlisle stood serenely in the dock, accused of the murder of Mary Gerrard, her rival in love. The evidence was damning: only Elinor had the motive, the opportunity, and the means to administer the fatal poison. Yet, inside the hostile courtroom, only one man still presumed Elinor was innocent until proven guilty: Hercule Poirot was all that stood between Elinor and the gallows. On holiday on the Cornish Riviera, Hercule Poirot is alarmed to hear pretty Nick Buckley describe her recent "accidental brushes with death". First, on a treacherous Cornish hillside, the brakes on her car failed. Then, on a coastal path, a falling boulder missed her by inches. Later, an oil painting fell and almost crushed her in bed. So when Poirot finds a bullet hole in Nick's sun hat, he decides that this girl needs his help. Can he find the would-be killer before he hits his target? The house guests at Styles seemed perfectly harmless to Captain Hastings: There was his own daughter Judith, an inoffensive ornithologist called Norton, dashing Mr. So Hastings was shocked when Poirot declared that one of them was a five-times murderer. True, the ageing detective was crippled with arthritis, but had his deductive instincts finally deserted him? Who was your favorite character and why? Poirot of course. As always excellent. Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting? Yes it was, but I didn't! Any additional comments? Whilst many of the later books in this series were disappointing this was an excellent ending to an overall wonderful series. It was fantastic to have the pairing of Poirot and the gentle Hastings for the last mystery. If you have enjoyed Poirot you will not be disappointed. This story takes us full circle with Poirot and Hastings, back to Styles the scene of their first adventure together. I won't go Curtain: Complete and Unabridged: Poirots Last Case more detail as I don't want to give any spoilers. This is a worthy addition to Curtain: Complete and Unabridged: Poirots Last Case Christie library, and I highly recommend this book. Good hunting! Very nostalgic, I was in tears. The relationship between Hercule and Hastings so warmhearted in this book. I loved, loved loved it. I will listen again sometime with less sadness and more appreciation of very good friends. It is the country manor where, thirty years previously, he and Poirot had first met in England and where they had also solved their first murder mystery together. Now, Styles has changed hands and is being run as a modest post-war guest house, and it is here that Hastings makes a gut-wrenching discovery: Poirot's health has taken a turn for the worse. The Belgian detective is now old, gaunt, arthritic, and confined to a wheelchair as he battles a weak heart. But his little gray cells are as active as ever, which is why Poirot has called him to Styles in the first place - a murderer is in their midst, and may be ready to strike again. He asks Hastings Curtain: Complete and Unabridged: Poirots Last Case be his eyes and ears Curtain: Complete and Unabridged: Poirots Last Case the place, for Poirot does not know who is likely to be the killer's next victim. Being as observant and vigilant as possible, Hastings takes stock of his fellow company, To me, he will always be the definitive Poirot. Hastings, who has just lost his wife, is asked by Poirot to meet him at Styles, the site of a previous case thirty years earlier - their first. Styles is now a guest house. Poirot's health is failing, and he is confined to a wheelchair, due to his arthritis and bad heart. But he still has all his marbles. He tells Hastings that there is a murderer on the premises, and he needs Hastings to be his eyes and ears. Franklin's lab assistant, who just happens to be Hastings' estranged daughter Judith. One of these people is a killer. But can Hastings take his attention off his daughter long enough to help Poirot find him or her? Then the murders start. What does Poirot know? Can he solve his final case before his final curtain? A dark mystery, but a good one, with Poirot's illness permeating the entire episode. The murder in the end is actually the McGuffin - the big story is that this is Poirot's last case. My big complaint is that Miss Lemon and Superintendent Japp were not brought back for the episode. I know some people didn't like the turn this series took, and it's Curtain: Complete and Unabridged: Poirots Last Case, the seasons with Miss Lemon and Hastings were the best -- they had humor and lightness as well as mystery.
