  • A Gardener Is Only As Sharp As His Tools by Carolyn Meiers Yard Work
A Gardener is Only as Sharp As His Tools by Carolyn Meiers Yard work is hard enough. Don’t let dull tools make it any more difficult. Hedge trimmers, scissors, grass clippers, mowers, knives, chain saws, hand saws, loppers, and pruning shears are just a few of the gardening tools that work better with a sharp edge. A professional can do the job or you may decide to do it yourself. The cost of sharpening most hand tools is less than $5, and once a year is quite adequate, depending on usage. The best time of the year is late fall, after the gardening is done. The tools won’t lose their edge, and they’ll be ready for the first jobs of spring. Missed the fall? Jump in and get it done any time of year! If you decide to sharpen your own at home, be careful! A longer file reduces the chance of accidental cuts, but it is easy to slice your hand with one missed pass on the file. Power grinders are not for the novice, and can damage the cutting edge if used improperly. Using a file, make several passes with the file away from the blunt end to improve sharpness. How many passes depends, but the average is 10 passes. Any tools used to cut grass need more attention because wet grass will quickly dull a blade. Shears and mowers are obvious tools that need an edge, but plenty of other gardening tools would work better if exposed to the sharpening file. A shovel is a good example.

It provides controlled irrigation by capillary flow to plants planted near it. With thanks to Kathy McDonough Here’s a reason to buy cakes and cookies in the grocery store! Repurpose those grocery store bakery containers into seed starters. Jiffy peat pots are perfect in any of these. Then use them as trays after transplanting the seedlings. A five gallon ‘bucket stool’ with an old garden chair cushion which also makes a good kneeler. Kudos to Diana O’Hagan! Here is Diana O’Hagan’s all round favorite tool. It's a brand new Japanese hori hori garden knife. It can be used for just about anything. Ingenious! Diana’s repurposed one gallon milk jugs with bottom removed, used over tomatoes and pepper plants on cold nights . The cut edge digs nicely into soil. To stop from blowing away, she puts a thin bamboo or pruned twig, 18-24" long, through the top into the soil and uses an old belt to store them together when not in use. Mulching Magic Prior to mulching your new planting beds, place the small container pots that the plants came in upside down to cover the plants (like a top hat).

  • March 2016 Newsletter
March 2016 The Trowel President’s Prose Volume 4, Issue 1 Dear Members and Friends, Just when I thought that spring might be peeking around the corner, it snowed again! I've been searching in my little garden to see if any of the daffodil bulbs that I planted last autumn have come through, but on the dreary north side it remains cold and still. On the other hand I visited Esther recently and on the sunny west side of her house, she has patches of tulips already. I am sooooo envious! I hope that some of you will decide to join me as April approaches and take a little stroll through Meacham Woods. I was inspired by the speaker who told us about all the wild flowers that we may see and am hoping to do that this year. I do need someone with me who can identify them though as I am sure I won’t remember. Let us find a way to get a group together and enjoy the outdoors. Your Plant Sale committee have already been very busy making plans for the sale in May and I hope that you have placed your orders with Henia and will be ready to get up early that weekend to help unload the truck and set up for another exciting and successful event. Please note on your calendars that we change venue as of April for our monthly meetings. We will be at St. Paul Church and you will get timely reminders from the Program Committee in this respect.
