Glasgow is also INSP’s home city, and our team are delighted to share our city with you for this year’s Summit!

Glasgow is a bright, bustling metropolis brimming with things to see and do. If you’re arriving early or sticking around after to make the most of your Scottish trip, here’s some recommendations from our team of what not to miss.

Maree

For coffee (and cake) in the city centre, head to Riverhill on Gordon Street or Laboratorio Espresso on West Nile Street. Great places to eat dinner are Chaakoo Bombay Café in the City Centre (for Iranian inspired Indian food) and Crabshakk in Finnieston (for seafood).

I live in the Southside of Glasgow and there also are lots of great places for coffee and food in Strathbungo and Shawlands – Glad Café, Gnom, Café Strange Brew, and Gusto & Relish are all great. For some history and culture, the Transport Museum and the Kelvingrove Museum are not too far to walk from the summit hotel – both are fascinating museums in amazing (and very different) buildings. Glasgow is great for parks and Kelvingrove Park in the West End is only a 20-minute walk from the Crowne Plaza.

If you have a spare day and feel like a walking up a hill for some amazing views and fresh air, I recommend either Ben Lomond or The Cobbler. Both are around an hour away from Glasgow (by car or bus) and the walks each take a few hours, up and back. If you have time to see more of , then (and I may be biased, as it’s where I grew up) you can beat the North West Highlands.

I live in Dennistoun and love the East End! I like spending Saturday or Sunday afternoon hunting for bargains at the famous Barras market. From there you can pop for a pint at WEST and then on to the People’s Palace to learn about the .

It sounds strange, but the Necropolis is a lovely walk. It’s a Victorian garden cemetery with beautiful views over the city. There’s a micro-brewery, Drygate, nearby where you can order a flight to sample a few of the local brews.

My new favourite place for live music is Blue Arrow, a jazz club which opened this year. They have lots of incredible local and international musicians most weekends (check Facebook listings before you go). There is so much music in Glasgow! Lots of bars have live music - MacSorleys on Jamaica Street has live music or open mic seven nights a week.

For eating out, it’s difficult to pick! Every weekend Thursday-Sunday there’s a street food market at on Argyle Street. My favourite for pizza: Paesano, Miller Street. Best noodles: Ramen Dayo, Queen Street.

They say in Glasgow you have to look up, above the shop fronts, to catch sight of the city’s beauty, while in Edinburgh it’s in your face no matter where you look. But, what Glasgow lacks in obvious prettiness, it makes up for in character.

My favourite thing about the place I have lived most of my life is its vibrant and inclusive nightlife. From having a dram in Òran Mór, a converted church emblazoned with Alasdair Gray murals, or vegan dishes at The Hug and Pint, to the scores of city centre dive bars, like Nice n Sleazy’s or Stereo, and countless others you’d spot me in weekly, where every night there’s amazing music, local and international. There’s a place for everyone when the sun goes down. Craig

I hail from the Shetland Islands off the North coast of Scotland, and have called Glasgow my home for the past 10 years. You’ll never find yourself short of things to do in this vibrant city!

A great way to explore Glasgow is on the City Sightseeing bus - an open-top bus tour that allows you to hop on and off at your leisure. You get them in many cities, so I’m sure you’ll be familiar with the idea. A great way to learn more about Glasgow, and get to some of the top attractions around town. I’d recommend the as a must-see (and free entry!), and the newly-opened Clydeside Distillery is worth a visit if you’re a fan of whisky - Scotland’s national drink!

I like to grab a meal in Opium on Hope Street (oriental fusion cuisine) and Obsession of India on High Street. And if you fancy grabbing a film in your time here, I recommend the Grosvenor in the West End or Glasgow Film Theatre in the city centre.

Niamh

I highly recommend the area around King Street. You can easily lose an afternoon in art spaces like Transmission and Trongate 103, and if you get hungry I recommend lunch at Trans Europe Café or for a cheap vegetarian snack I get the dhal at 13th Note. Barely a minute away, you can get vegan food at Mono, which also houses a vinyl record shop.

There’s an abundance of vintage clothing shops nearby, including Mr Ben’s right next to Mono, and for the nerdy among us there’s arcade bar Super Bario as well as two branches of A1 Toys (one for board games and the other for toys and comics).

See you in Glasgow!
