Large print copies are available from the stewards at the main door. ❖ If you use a hearing aid, please turn the setting to ‘T’ in order to take advantage of the induction loop in the Cathedral. ❖ Please check that you have switched off your mobile phone. ❖ Lavatories, including disabled facilities, are available towards the back of the church on the south side. ❖ In the event of an emergency, please remain calm and seated. Stewards will direct you out of the Cathedral. ❖ The Cathedral Close is an historic conservation area. Mike studied at Cranmer Hall, Durham and was ordained at Bradford Cathedral in 2006. All of his ministry has been in the wider Keighley district, serving his Curacy in Silsden before becoming Vicar of Morton and Riddlesden. He is married to Elspeth and they have four children, Anna, Zac, Josh and Esther. Days off are spent out and about in the Dales or catching up with friends. The Reverend Kathia Shoesmith I was ordained at Wakefield Cathedral and served my curacy in the Benefice of Ripponden with Rishworth and Barkisland with West Scammonden. I am Incumbent of St John, Bradshaw and St Andrew, Holmfield, and Priest-in-Charge of St Thomas, Claremount. I am also currently serving as Area Dean of Halifax and Joint Area Dean of Calder Valley. Prior to ordination I was a Psychiatric Nurse Therapist and I continue to have an interest in mental health and inner healing. I am the proud mum of 4 children and granny of 2 beautiful grand-daughters. I feel honoured and look forward to representing and being part of Bradford Cathedral. The Reverend Phil Stone Phil and Di came to Scargill from London in 2010 to re-establish a community with a ministry centred around a generous hospitality. The resurrected Scargill has been an adventure where God’s loving presence has been experienced by community and guests. Phil is a Londoner where he was a vicar for 22 years in two inner-city parishes in Hackney and Harlesden as well as being the Area Dean of Brent. Phil and Di have four grown up children and are blessed with five grandchildren. He enjoys walking, reading, films, people and the challenge of being a Spurs fan. The Reverend Michael Wood I was born and raised in West Yorkshire, taught for a short time and then trained for the priesthood. Ordained in Blackburn Cathedral and spent seventeen years working in Blackpool and Preston before coming back to West Yorkshire in the year 2000 serving in Brighouse, Castleford and now Leeds. A passionate interest has always been how the church relates to the poor and marginalised within our communities and so Michael is now the Urban Parishes' Adviser for the Leeds Episcopal Area. He reads widely end enjoys the theatre and food - cooking and eating. 3 The Procession Crucifer Choir Verger Canons Emeritus Ecumenical Canons Lay Canons Honorary Canons Archdeacons Assistant Bishops Area Bishops Residentiary Canons The Dean Verger Diocesan Registrar Church Wardens Bishop 15.55 Welcome The Very Reverend Jerry Lepine, Dean of Bradford Silence Processional Hymn The Church’s one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord; she is his new creation by water and the word: from heaven he came and sought her to be his holy Bride; with his own blood he bought her, and for her life he died. Elect from every nation, yet one o’er all the earth, her charter of salvation one Lord, one faith, one birth; one holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food, and to one hope she presses with every grace endued. 4 Though with a scornful wonder men see her sore opprest, by schisms rent asunder, by heresies distrest; yet saints their watch are keeping, their cry goes up, ‘How long?’ And soon the night of weeping shall be the morn of song. ‘Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of her war, she waits the consummation of peace for evermore; till with the vision glorious her longing eyes are blest, and the great Church victorious shall be the Church at rest. Yet she on earth hath union with God the Three in One, and mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won: O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we, like them, the meek and lowly, on high may dwell with thee. Words: S J Stone (1839-1900) Tune: ‘Aurelia’, S S Wesley (1810-1876) CP 585 Please be seated Beloved, we are come together in the presence of almighty God and of the whole company of heaven to offer unto him through our Lord Jesus Christ our worship and praise and thanksgiving; to make confession of our sins; to pray, as well for others as for ourselves, that we may know more truly the greatness of God's love and shew forth in our lives the fruits of his grace; and to ask on behalf of all men such things as their well-being doth require. Wherefore let us kneel in silence and remember God's presence with us now. Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against thy holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; 5 and we have done those things which we ought not to have done; and there is no health in us. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders. Spare thou them, O God, which confess their faults. Restore thou them that are penitent; according to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesu our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of thy holy name. Amen. The Right Reverend Paul Slater, Bishop of Kirkstall Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who desireth not the death of a sinner, but rather that he may turn from his wickedness and live; and hath given power, and commandment, to his ministers to declare and pronounce to his people, being penitent, the absolution and remission of their sins: he pardoneth and absolveth all them that truly repent and unfeignedly believe his holy gospel. Wherefore let us beseech him to grant us true repentance, and his Holy Spirit, that those things may please him which we do at this present; and that the rest of our life hereafter may be pure and holy; so that at the last we may come to his eternal joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Versicles and Responses by Bernard Rose (1916-1966) are sung by a cantor and the choir O Lord, open thou our lips and our mouth shall shew forth thy praise. O God, make speed to save us. O Lord, make haste to help us. Please stand as the Choir sings the doxology Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Praise ye the Lord. The Lord’s name be praised. 6 Please be seated as the Choir sings the psalm appointed for this evening Psalm 103 Praise the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me praise his holy Name. Praise the Lord, O my soul: and forget not all his benefits. Who forgiveth all thy sin: and healeth all thine infirmities. Who saveth thy life from destruction: and crowneth thee with mercy and loving-kindness; who satisfieth thy mouth with good things: making thee young and lusty as an eagle. The Lord executeth righteousness and judgement: for all them that are oppressed with wrong. He shewed his ways unto Moses: his works unto the children of Israel. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy: long-suffering, and of great goodness. He will not alway be chiding: neither keepeth he his anger for ever. He hath not dealt with us after our sins: nor rewarded us according to our wickednesses. For look how high the heaven is in comparison of the earth: so great is his mercy also toward them that fear him.
