The legendary Billy Ocean was in town, with his own backing band, and he cer- tainly took Colombo by storm with a stu- pendous concert performance on Valentine's Day (February 14th, 2012), at the SLECC - the same venue Cliff Richard did his thing when he visited Sri Lanka in 2007. Cliff's concert was outstanding…and so was Billy Ocean. Come to think of it, music lovers here had to wait a very long time to take in a concert that turned out to be truly magnif- icent. Born in New York City, Peter grew up in the Bronx during the mid-1950's in a small, three-room apartment where he lived with his parents, older sister, two cats, dog and parakeet. For some time, Peter lived with his grandmother, an actress in New York City's Yiddish Theater. She and Peter had a strong bond, and she affectionately named him "Little Wolf" for his energetic and rambunctious ways. His father was a musician, vaudevillian and singer of light opera. Like Peter did years later, his father left home at age fourteen to join the Schubert Theater Touring Company with which he traveled the country performing light operas such as The Student Prince and Merry Widow. He had his own radio show called The Boy Baritone, which featured new songs from Tin Pan Alley, and was a member of the Robert Shaw Chorale. As a result of such artistic pursuits, Peter's father underwent long periods of unemployment that created a struggle to make financial ends meet. We’re going to discuss vocal timbre, ornamentation, and venue/audience as we figure out what makes these singers expressive and admired. Warm-up writing: Thinking about vocal timbres timbre (n) – sound quality or color. Timbre is the reason that a flute sounds like a flute and an oboe sounds like an oboe, even when they’re playing the same pitch at the same dynamic level. Different sounds have different timbres because of vibrato, intensity, the attack of the note (beginning), the decay of the sound (ending), and its resonance (the presence of different harmonics in the sound). Describe the voice of a singer you really like. What do you like about their voice, they way they perform, or the way their music makes you feel? The presentation of testimony was introduced by honorary chairperson Cisay Houston and her daughter, Whitney Houston. Testimony was offered to the task force by 20 youth ambassadors. These ambassadors discussed their positive erperiences with programs that involved teaching parenting skills to teen mothers and providing: (1) means for teen mothers to continue their education; (2) jobs for youth; (3) assistance to migrant and refugee 'amilies; (4) assistance to disabled youth; (3) peer counseling, and (6) community projects.
