A study published by the Pew Research Center in August 2020 showed that one-third of American adults had either attended an online religious ser- vice or watched one on television in the previous month—half of them having done so for the first time since the pan- demic began. But while that migration online has brought convenience for many people, it has translated into extra barriers for oth- ers. And for anyone whose work relies on personal interactions, especially with members of vulnerable communities— those often disproportionately affected by COVID-19—the transition hasn’t always been as simple as scheduling a Zoom session. Community and religious leaders have had to reinvent organiza- tions and ministries in order to continue delivering support to those who need it. In some cases, that has meant accel- erating changes that had already begun and that will shape their careers and lives well beyond the pandemic. Four STH alumni spoke with focus about their experiences over the past year—and how their outlook on the future has changed. iStock
