The putatively ‘ideological nature’ of interna- tional legal scholarship with ‘political preferences remaining concealed’,2 the ‘concern that legal scholarship could turn out to be nothing more than the pseudo-objective defence of ruling ideologies’3 is acute not only when scholars examine contemporary international legal problems but also when they exam- ine the history of international law.4 Famously, Hans Kelsen has denounced a ‘tendency wide-spread among writers on international law’ to produce ‘political ideology’.5 Kelsen sought to escape this by writing books of a ‘purely juristic character’.6 In his foreword to the commentary on the UN Charter of 1950, he stressed that this work dealt ‘with the law of the Organisation, not with its actual or desired role in the in- ternational play of powers.

The term ‘cultural history of science’, as others have observed, is clumsy and imperfect. Cultural history is itself riddled with ambiguities which the addition of ‘science’ is unlikely to clarify.1 However, the term loosely describes a genre of historical writing which has become a staple of cross-disciplinary research: books which examine science’s wider cultural ‘impacts’ and ‘contexts’. “The Funniest Woman in the World”: Jackie ‘Moms’ Mabley and Redefining Political Activism in the Modern Black Freedom Struggle Grace Leeson Advisor: Brenna Greer Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Prerequisite for Honors in History 2014 Acknowledgements First and foremost, this project never would have come to fruition without the constant support and advice of my advisor, Dr. Brenna Greer. I would like to thank her for her intelligence, dedication, and sense of humor that rivals that of ‘Moms’ herself. It has been the best year and I have learned so much thanks to her invaluable mentorship. I must thank my honors seminar group, Laura Yan, Daisy Dowdall, Jiaqi Fan, and Dr. Lidwein Kapteijns for their suggestions during the formulation and editing of this thesis. Makenna Murray and Olivia Luz kindly took the time out of their lives to listen to my ideas and draw my attention to points where the thoughts got lost on the page. Finally, Grace Owens-Stively and Mikey Jackson-Smith helped immeasurably by organizing my thesis carol when I mixed up all of my sources. Thanks to the generosity of the Jerome A. Schiff Fellowship and the F.A.O. Schwarz Fellowship, I had the opportunity to visit the archives at the Amistad Research Center at Tulane University, the MARBL archives at Emory University, The Bancroft Library at University of California, Berkeley; and the Special Collections at University of California, Los Angeles. Additionally, I conducted research in the comfort of my home University thanks to the brilliant research skills of Laura Reiner and her team of Interlibrary Loan wizards.

  • The Historical Journal
The Historical Journal EDITORIAL POLICY The Historical Journal seeks to cover all aspects of history since the fifteenth century. Four issues, totalling about 1,200 pages, are published each year, in March, June, September, and December. The Journal aims to publish some 30-35 articles and communications each year and reviews recent historical literature mainly in the form of historiographical reviews and review articles, some 15-20 appearing each year. A small number of reviews of individual books are published. The Journal aims to provide a forum for younger scholars making a distinguished debut as well as to publish the work of leading historians. Approximately one article in four submitted is accepted for publication after anonymous peer review. The editors endeavour to reach a decision on submitted articles within three months, and to publish accepted contributions within twelve months of acceptance. On acceptance, the editors will give an approximate date of publication. The editors reserve the right to change that date at short notice, owing to space constraints and the need to achieve an appropriate balance of content in each issue. The editors are happy to consider relevant iconographic material. They will also accept submissions in languages other than English. Reviews are commissioned by the Reviews Editor. However, commissioning is not a definite undertaking to publish, and the Journal reserves the right not to publish after anonymous peer review. Reviews are also normally published within twelve months of acceptance. The current editors are Professor Julian Hoppit and Dr Clare Jackson, for articles, and Dr Michael Ledger-Lomas, for reviews. There is an editorial board and an international advisory board.
