Neneh Cherry: Blank Slate | Wondering Sound 10/13/20, 12:16 PM Neneh Cherry: Blank Slate Neneh Cherry: Blank Slate | Wondering Sound 10/13/20, 12:16 PM Neneh Cherry: Blank Slate Anyone looking for a thumbnail summary of the life of Neneh Cherry should start with the sound of her voice. Even over the phone, it has the same ebullience that memorably bounded through her massively successful 1988 single “Buffalo Stance.” As she talks, she unconsciously slides across a trio of accents; the lilt of her Swedish childhood gives way to a punchier sound from her years in London, before landing on the kind of bluntness characteristic of the city where she’s sitting when I get her on the phone: 2nd Avenue in New York. There’s edginess, too, as if her voice can hardly keep up with the words racing through her brain. “I’m really excited to be here,” she says, breathlessly recounting her return to the Big Apple. “I’m finally feeling a little bit of my equilibrium coming back. I had some breakfast this morning and I could feel my heart really start beating at the thought of being back. I almost had a heart attack at the table!” That rollercoaster of accents is not just a tour of Cherry’s personal history, it’s shorthand for her entire career. Cherry has spent the better part of 35 years weaving her way through the music world, stopping to embrace one sonic idea before quickly loosening her grip and moving on to the next. The result has been a thrillingly eclectic discography: the manic world beat experimentalism of her first band Rip Rig + Panic gave way to the cheeky- yet-wise hip-hop and soul of her early solo efforts; her 2012 album with the woozy free-jazz outfit The Thing nodded toward her current album, Blank Project, a rhythm-driven collaboration with Four Tet and electro-space rock duo RocketNumberNine. http://www.wonderingsound.com/interview/neneh-cherry-blank-slate/ Page 1 of 7 Neneh Cherry: Blank Slate | Wondering Sound 10/13/20, 12:16 PM Smalltown Supersound Neneh Cherry - Out Of The Black (featuring Robyn) Share Cookie policy You can find a flicker of that spark if you dig around on YouTube for the footage of Cherry performing with her stepfather, jazz trumpeter Don Cherry, on Italian TV back in 1976. Just 12 years old at the time, Cherry appears toward the end of the set and quickly joins in the chanting and drum-banging of the adults. She’s gangly and a bit awkward, but there’s an unmistakable glint of joy in her eyes. “It was an amazing gift at times,” Cherry says of her childhood, “but when I was growing up, I didn’t ‘get’ that. I used to long for a ‘normal’ family and a ‘normal’ car and a ‘normal’ dog, not a Tibetan temple dog. More and more now I constantly recognize the things I’ve been handed down. My parents’ creativity and music was like food to me.” There were other benefits to her somewhat unorthodox upbringing as well. Cherry dropped out of school at 14 with the blessing of her parents; and it was her stepfather who inadvertently helped her find her musical voice. In 1978, Don was invited by the Slits to perform as opening act on their UK tour, so he brought his 15-year-old stepdaughter along for the ride. Neneh became fast friends with Ari Up, the Slits’ charismatic frontwoman, eventually serving as the band’s backup singer and eventually moving to http://www.wonderingsound.com/interview/neneh-cherry-blank-slate/ Page 2 of 7 Neneh Cherry: Blank Slate | Wondering Sound 10/13/20, 12:16 PM London to live in a squat with Up and former X-Ray Spex saxophonist Lora Logic (who would go on to form the delightfully scabrous post-punk outfit Essential Logic.) “We were really in kind of a sisterhood,” Cherry says, “It was like I had really found my family. I don’t know what would have happened if hadn’t ended up there.” Neneh Cherry Though she eventually headed back to New York for a stretch, she was quickly coaxed back the UK with the open invite to join Rip Rig + Panic, the new project led by Bruce Smith and Gareth Sayer, who had been members of the harrowing curdled-funk outfit the Pop Group. “She had bright orange hair at the time,” Sayer remembers. “She looked a lot more punky than people would think. And she had a bit of this New York http://www.wonderingsound.com/interview/neneh-cherry-blank-slate/ Page 3 of 7 Neneh Cherry: Blank Slate | Wondering Sound 10/13/20, 12:16 PM attitude. But obviously she was a natural talent — a complete sort of star, really. I would write songs in these completely demented keys, and she seemed to be able to manage it all.” To compare the footage of Cherry from 1976 to what’s available online from her days with Rip Rig + Panic is to see how quickly and completely she came into her own. Gone are the graceless movements of her pre-teen years. She’s in complete control, bending and contorting her body in African-inspired dance. That confidence is matched in her voice — a powerful, slightly twangy alto that pops out of the mix like a flame. The band dissolved after just two years. Five years later, Sayer was in a New York studio when producer Michael Johnson came by, raving about this hot new young rapper and her single “Buffalo Stance.” “He said, ‘Have you ever heard of this girl Neneh Cherry before?’” Sayer remembers, laughing. “I said, ‘I’ve made four albums with her!’ They were pushing her as this young out-of-nowhere talent. That was a bit weird for me.” In a way, that marketing logic made sense. Both “Buffalo Stance” and the album it came from, Raw Like Sushi, were far afield from anything Cherry had done to that point, trading the manic, dub-fueled freakouts of Rip Rig + Panic for streamlined hop-hop and R&B. The reinvention worked: “Buffalo Stance” hit No. 3 on both the UK singles chart as well as the Billboard Top 100. “It was kind of crazy, but I felt like I rode with it,” Cherry says. “When I look at it now, I feel like ‘Buffalo Stance’ is one of my kids, or a nice old friend. I did it at a gig the other day and it was nice to see everyone singing along. But after Raw Like Sushi was out, I was definitely feeling like I was ready to move on to the next thing.” http://www.wonderingsound.com/interview/neneh-cherry-blank-slate/ Page 4 of 7 Neneh Cherry: Blank Slate | Wondering Sound 10/13/20, 12:16 PM She released a pair of albums in the ’90s: 1992′s Homebrew and 1997′s Man — and logged a handful of oddball collaborations, some of them natural (Peter Gabriel; Gorillaz) some of them less so (with Live’s Ed Kowalczyk on the soundtrack to the wisely-forgotten 1988 indie rom-com Playing by Heart.) Now, Cherry’s penchant for both collaboration and sonic exploration has culminated in one of her finest achievements. Recorded in a quick five-day burst, the 10 songs on Blank Project feel like a glorious mélange of the various sounds and styles that Cherry has accumulated in her long career, and both Four Tet and RocketNumberNine make for natural sonic foils. In a way, the album almost feels like a retrospective: The early trip-hop experiments of Homebrew drive new tracks like “Spit Three Times” and “Everything”; the chaotic experimentalism of Rip Rig + Panic informs the minimalist grooves and swinging diction of “Cynical” and “Dossier.” Cherry’s voice is on fine display throughout, curling like smoke around the tight-knit http://www.wonderingsound.com/interview/neneh-cherry-blank-slate/ Page 5 of 7 Neneh Cherry: Blank Slate | Wondering Sound 10/13/20, 12:16 PM noir of opener “Across the Water” and hopscotching feverishly across the title track. “I must say, doing this record, I feel like I’ve gone full circle with my songs and my music,” she says. “The way they were executed, it’s quite raw and unpredictable. It’s not about being perfect and overproduced. It feels natural.” When discussing the lyrics on Blank Project, though, Cherry’s normally rapid-fire voice noticeably slows. It’s no wonder: Much of the album wrestles with the notion of getting older, from little details like gaining weight and staying in touch with loved ones to trying to stay afloat financially. Her impending 50th birthday played a small part in this, but the strongest influence on the album’s contemplative tone was the death of Cherry’s mother Moki in 2009. “I was completely frozen for about a year,” she remembers. “But after that, I felt like I had to start drawing from it, using the shock and sadness and making into something creative rather than wandering around deaf, dumb, and blind. I started to heal my way through that stuff, and songwriting and music is how I digest it.” Unsurprisingly, Cherry is already looking beyond Blank Project and the run of tour dates that she and RocketNumberNine will embark on throughout 2014. Her goal now, she says, is to ride the wave of DIY culture that is helping to democratize the music industry in a ways that she couldn’t have imagined during her punk days. “That’s the cool thing about the Internet. You can just put things out on your SoundCloud and it doesn’t have to be such a big deal.

  • The Forgotten Revolution of Female Punk Musicians in the 1970S
Peace Review 16:4, December (2004), 439-444 The Forgotten Revolution of Female Punk Musicians in the 1970s Helen Reddington Perhaps it was naive of us to expect a revolution from our subculture, but it's rare for a young person to possess knowledge before the fact. The thing about youth subcultures is that regardless how many of their elders claim that the young person's subculture is "just like the hippies" or "just like the mods," to the committed subculturee nothing before could possibly have had the same inten- sity, importance, or all-absorbing life commitment as the subculture they belong to. Punk in the late 1970s captured the essence of unemployed, bored youth; the older generation had no comprehension of our lack of job prospects and lack of hope. We were a restless generation, and the young women among us had been led to believe that a wonderful Land of Equality lay before us (the 1975 Equal Opportunities Act had raised our expectations), only to find that if we did enter the workplace, it was often to a deep-seated resentment that we were taking men's jobs and depriving them of their birthright as the family breadwinner. Few young people were unaware of the angry sound of the Sex Pistols at this time—by 1977, a rash of punk bands was spreading across the U.K., whose aspirations covered every shade of the spectrum, from commercial success to political activism. The sheer volume of bands caused a skills shortage, which led to the cooption of young women as instrumentalists into punk rock bands, even in the absence of playing experience.

  • Musician Neneh Cherry on Addressing Politics in Your Art
October 29, 2018 - As told to T. Cole Rachel, 2891 words. Tags: Music, Politics, Process, Collaboration. On addressing politics in your art Musician Neneh Cherry on what makes a good a collaborator, the headspace required for making thoughtful art, and why sometimes being quiet is a radical act. What’s the kind of headspace you need to be in when you’re working on music? It’s somewhat different every time, but recently I had a place that I wanted to go in my spirit and soul, through the songs and with the songs. I knew it was going to need me to be in a more… not a static place, exactly, but a more still place. It was almost like I could feel the songs around my head. Of course, the collaborative journey played an important part in actually reaching the goal. In the case of Broken Politics, I think we reached the goal I had in mind. I work with Cameron McVey, who is my husband and my creative partner, beyond just the spousal stuff. We’ve also had a very intimate creative journey. Quite often we’re working with other programmers and musicians when we’re writing, so there are all of these different things to figure out and negotiate. He’s a really fast writer. I’m a much slower writer. A lot of the time we’re in the studio by ourselves, each working at our own pace. Sometimes, even when you have an idea of where you want to go, it’s still a struggle getting there and getting past all the little weird obstacle courses that your brain sets up for you in order to get to that place where you’re creatively open.

THE CLASH AND MASS MEDIA MESSAGES FROM THE ONLY BAND THAT MATTERS Sean Xavier Ahern A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2012 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Kristen Rudisill © 2012 Sean Xavier Ahern All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor This thesis analyzes the music of the British punk rock band The Clash through the use of media imagery in popular music in an effort to inform listeners of contemporary news items. I propose to look at the punk rock band The Clash not solely as a first wave English punk rock band but rather as a “news-giving” group as presented during their interview on the Tom Snyder show in 1981. I argue that the band’s use of communication metaphors and imagery in their songs and album art helped to communicate with their audience in a way that their contemporaries were unable to. Broken down into four chapters, I look at each of the major releases by the band in chronological order as they progressed from a London punk band to a globally known popular rock act. Viewing The Clash as a “news giving” punk rock band that inundated their lyrics, music videos and live performances with communication images, The Clash used their position as a popular act to inform their audience, asking them to question their surroundings and “know your rights.” iv For Pat and Zach Ahern Go Easy, Step Lightly, Stay Free. v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This thesis would not have been possible without the help of many, many people.

Once the effects of the new wave were fully absorbed, it became apparent that the world of singer-songwriters would never be the same again. A conceptual mood had taken over the scene, and that mood's predecessors were precisely the Bob Dylans, the Neil Youngs, the Leonard Cohens, the Tim Buckleys, the Joni Mitchells, who had not been the most popular stars of the 1970s. Instead, they became the reference point for a new generation of "auteurs". Women, in particular, regained the status of philosophical beings (and not only disco-divas or cute front singers) that they had enjoyed with the works of Carole King and Joni Mitchell. Suzy Gottlieb, better known as Phranc (1), was the (Los Angeles-based) songwriter who started the whole acoustic folk revival with her aptly-titled Folksinger (? 1984/? 1985 - nov 1985), whose protest themes and openly homosexual confessions earned her the nickname of "all-american jewish-lesbian folksinger". She embodied the historic meaning of that movement because she was a punkette (notably in Nervous Gender) before she became a folksinger, and because she continued to identify, more than anyone else, with her post- feminist and AIDS-stricken generation in elegies such as Take Off Your Swastika (1989) and Outta Here (1991).

The effervescence of New York's underground scene was contagious and spread to England with a 1976 tour of the Ramones that was artfully manipulated to start a fad (after the "100 Club Festival" of september 1976 that turned British punk-rock into a national phenomenon). In the USA the punk subculture was a combination of subterranean record industry and of teenage angst. In Britain it became a combination of fashion and of unemployment. Music in London had been a component of fashion since the times of the Swinging London (read: Rolling Stones). Punk-rock was first and foremost a fad that took over the Kingdom by storm. However, the social component was even stronger than in the USA: it was not only a generic malaise, it was a specific catastrophe. The iron rule of prime minister Margaret Thatcher had salvaged Britain from sliding into the Third World, but had caused devastation in the social fabric of the industrial cities, where unemployment and poverty reached unprecedented levels and racial tensions were brooding.

  • James Holden's New Live Touring Incarnation (In Support of Holden's 2013 Album 'The Inheritors')
RocketNumberNine biography In the two years that have elapsed since the 2013 release of their second RocketNumberNine album 'MeYouWeYou', London-born brothers Ben and Tom Page have found themselves much in demand, to the point where their original RocketNumberNine pet project has had to take something of a back seat. A hook up with Smalltown Supersound labelmate and Swedish singing superheroine Neneh Cherry saw the Page siblings drafted in to provide the synth and drum complement to her Kieran Hebden-produced 'Blank Project' album in early 2014, leading on to RocketNumberNine's permanent installation as her backing band on the subsequent Neneh Cherry tour. And not content with one round the world trip, younger brother Tom has somehow also found the time to moonlight as drummer for modular synth maestro James Holden's new live touring incarnation (in support of Holden's 2013 album 'The Inheritors'). But now, as one set of touring cycles near their natural end, and with a crisp new RocketNumberNine 12” poised to emerge on Holden's Border Community label in the Autumn of 2015, the time has come for the brothers to refocus their attention on the symbiotic RocketNumberNine improvisational partnership where it all began. Growing up together in Chingford in the North Eastern outskirts of London, nestled just inside the M25, it was eight years ago that brothers Ben and Tom Page first formalised their musical union as synth-and- drum improv duo RocketNumberNine. But their dedication to one another runs way deeper than most siblings, having also lived together for most of their adult lives, including a spell together in a musical commune near Aberdeen in the North East of Scotland.
