PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2017/2018

Malcolm Petrofski President

It has been a very tough year with plenty more learning experiences and another round of structural changes at Racing , the governing body. It is critical that Racing Queensland stabilize their business and allow clubs to work through major projects with a consistent management structure.

This year we have moved some of the focus from pure survival to looking at opportunities we have in front of us and working up a plan to capitalize on these. The number one opportunity is the redevelopment of our excess land and using it to fund our future. The committee has funded the first step of this process by developing the master plan document. Milford Planning have produced the plan which is available for your review and we are now moving this forward with the assistance of Racing Queensland and our local state government members through the approval stages. It is a lengthy process. The ideal outcome at this stage would be to develop a small parcel of land on Dommett Street and then look to obtain long term leases on other areas to give the club an ongoing income stream into the future. It would be the Committee’s intention to set up a separate working committee to asses all potential lease or sale opportunities. Any final recommendation to the full Committee can only be decided on by those Committee members who have no potential or actual conflicts. No Committee member can vote on anything that they have a financial interest in according to the constitution. Expressions of interest in any development will be called via local papers and the usual commercial processes.

The financial results have dramatically improved both at a profitability level and a long-term asset value this year which is pleasing but we are still surviving month to month based on Racing Queensland funding and not getting ahead of the cash curve. While this year’s results look strong it is important that I advise you that the next year’s results will be impacted by a poor carnival period this year. The attendance numbers continue to improve, and the public support is strong which gives the view that it was profitable, but we have struggled to make a profit. Our expenditure on buying in infrastructure and ensuring that the public enjoyed the carnival period has eroded the profit and the committee will need to work on a new strategy to improve the profit to the club in this critical time. The new CEO and her team have been tasked with this critical item as we have one opportunity to make a profit each year and we cannot afford to miss this vital target again. They are planning for this period now and we have our finance team member ensuring that costs do not exceed income and that every cost is budgeted for and recorded correctly. In January we will also set up a subcommittee to work with the CEO and her team to make sure we hit this vital financial target as we cannot afford to miss the target in this area again.

Key items that we are working on now but not listed in order are:

1. On course stabling to attract new industry participants. 2. Upgrades to members and public facilities. This will not only improve the race day experience but also allow us to generate non-race day revenue. 3. Master plan to unlock land value. 4. Female jockey facilities. 5. Night racing which needs to start as twilight racing and develop. 6. Sand track improvements to improve training facilities. 7. Redevelopment of the tie up stall area and training facilities.

TOWNSVILLE TURF CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2017 2018 1

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

All the above require funding and we are working closely with Racing Queensland and the state government local members to try and achieve positive outcomes. I must mention that our three local state government members have been very supportive and are working with us to obtain funding, not only from racing funds but other grants that are available. For the first time since taking on this role I feel we are making progress in all the above areas, however we will not achieve outcomes in all areas this year, but we are now moving forward.

The committee have worked tirelessly again this year and we have in the last two months made changes to the management and administration structure to focus on long term development, cost control, improved financial reporting and promotion of the Turf Club. The new committee members who have been brought in to fill casual vacancies have been chosen for their individual skills that they can bring to the committee and in turn provide the highest level of support to the CEO and her team. We now have some long-term goals and strategies to improve the club for its members and industry participants.

To all the industry participants, thank you for the quality of racing you bring to the club and for your ongoing support and passion to improve the facilities you work in.

The employees and contractors who work on the facilities have again put in a tremendous effort to use the limited funds to their best advantage. These people have worked in a constantly changing environment and continually presented the facilities in the best possible way for the members and public.

The team working on the grass track racing surface have excelled this year and I am sure you all agree that the track has presented the best I have seen it in a few years, and raced fairly at all times. This is a constant juggle between weather, fertilizers, chemicals and on track usage. This year the team has been very successful and look to have the mix correct now. Our challenge is to balance short term usage with long term protection and to pray for rain as this is the best tonic for any track.

I finish this year off proud of our achievements, excited for the future and hopeful that we have turned the ship around and can head into smoother waters.

Thank you to the committee who continually volunteer their time and a special thanks to Vice President Ross Donovan who constantly keeps me on track and provides a good sounding board. He also constantly reminds me that this is a long- distance cup race and not a sprint race and we cannot achieve everything in one year.

I would also like to thank Peter Malpass who has personally loaned TTC money early in his time on the committee when our cash flow was in the negative range.

He did this without question to ensure the TTC could pay all its accounts and in particular the outstanding amounts at the Townsville City Council who at one stage had court orders issues against the club.

Without his generosity early we would possibly not have made it through the very tough early times.

If you need further detail or have questions, please raise them with the committee or CEO to make sure you are fully informed.

Regards,

Malcolm Petrofski

TREASURER’S REPORT

I am pleased to present the Treasurer’s report on the 2018 Audited Financial Statements for the Townsville Turf Club.

While the bottom line shows an improved financial position when compared to 2017, it has been achieved with significant financial contributions by Racing Queensland. Other influencing factors that have resulted in an improved financial position have included the establishment of budgets, constant monitoring of those, continuous cashflow monitoring, improved expenditure controls and rigorous reporting to the Committee. This area is continuing to develop to ensure the finances of the TTC are protected and presented in a professional manner.

As part of our ongoing finance improvement strategy we are regularly applying for grants and subsidies. In 2018 we were successful with one grant to the value of $13000 for furniture and we await the outcome of several others in 2018 2019. This revenue stream will be explored with increased vigour.

Unfortunately, the Winter Carnival has fallen short of anticipated profit in 2018 and the 2019 finances will also be impacted by a profit shortfall associated with hosting the prestigious event. All avenues to redress this are being explored with a view to ensuring the 2019 2020 event meets all financial expectations. It will be critical that every possible cost reduction be explored and will include TTC using long-term debt to purchase items that will be used throughout the year and go a long way to reducing external costs associated with the Winter Carnival. We are also looking to work with other clubs to bulk purchase items required for carnival periods.

During this year we have finalized payment plans with City Council, ATO and other suppliers for debts not associated with the current period.

We would like to thank those in the industry who have embraced our endeavours to introduce efficiencies around debt collection and we look forward to continuing to explore possibilities that allow our small team to focus on opportunities to grow the TTC venue.

We will continue our cost reduction program and continue to look at all expenses. Most recently extensive reviews of electricity costs, coldroom costs, water costs and other big-ticket items have been on our financial radar.

More specifically the financials audited by Jessups Accountants & Business Advisors highlight:

Balance Sheet 1. An improved Equity position from $9.8m 2017 to $12m 2018 with a net valuation increase $2.2m 2. Total Asset position at $13m and Liabilities at $942k Profit and Loss 1. Increased Income to $2.7m, with notable increases a. Racing Queensland increase $100k b. Sponsorship increase $66k 2. Increased Expenditure to $2.8m, with notable increase a. Winter Carnival Expenses $270k 3. Loss recorded for the 2018 Financial Year at $86k compared to $570k the previous year. Statement of Cashflows At June 30, 2017 $127k in cash and cash equivalents

While it is necessary to remain cautious of our current financial circumstances, it is hoped that with some stability around financial governance, the CEO and Committee can turn their focus to overcoming the reliance on Racing Queensland funding to ensure the Club’s ongoing concern.

Regards,

Natalie Rintala

CEO’S REPORT

Mindy Powell-Hodges

Chief Executive Officer

While I may only have been here a short time as the CEO of TTC, I would like to thank our racing community and sponsors for sharing their support in our endeavours to bring about the next great era for this Turf Club.

I have had the opportunity to meet this enduring and passionate community and consider it a privilege to hear their stories, many of whom have had a long association with the TTC.

I have taken on the call by our community to revitalize our facilities, the Grandstand and the Member’s Area. Because the truth is we have an enviable turf course with a rich cultural history, but the facilities are tired. While in the past funding obtained by those committees may have alluded our coffers, this is a new chapter of TTC and with it a new approach and new priorities. A critical item on my facilities list is the urgent requirement for the upgrade of the women’s jockey facilities. The ever growing number of female jockeys in our industry deserve equal facilities and support form race clubs and I will continue to push all available options to have this rectified.

We seek to implement changes that will attract the great community with non-racing events and promote our facilities for weddings, parties, balls and formals. The truth is that it is only through diversification that we may attain sustainability.

Not only is TTC focused on enhancing the experience of its members and guests, but also the trainers and jockeys who are the life blood of our industry. We are dedicated to creating growth in this industry as well as providing the facilities needed and deserved.

Lastly, as we move from 2018 to 2019, I would like to congratulate our racing community on their achievements over the last year. I would also like to make a special acknowledgement for the Horse of the Year ‘Grey Missile’ and his connections Mr O Chillemi, Mr T W Hedley, Mr D E Scheffler, Mrs M A Scheffler, Mr B J Innes, Mr P A Piccone, Ms J L Cooke, Mr B McDonald and Trainer of the Year ‘Roy Chillemi’ and Jockey of the Year ’Justin Stanley’.

TRAINER OF THE YEAR 17/18 JOCKEY OF THE YEAR 17/18 HORSE OF THE YEAR 17/18 ROY CHILLEMI JUSTIN STANLEY GREY MISSILE

Grey Missile (Red Element X Days Of Innocence) was crowned “Horse of the Year”, after graduating from winning a Class 3 Plate on 27th January, 2018 to winning the Cleveland Bay Handicap on 28th July, 2018. Grey Missile had 9 Townsville starts for 5 firsts, 2 seconds, 1 third and 1 unplaced run. Grey Missile became the first 3 year old to win the Cleveland Bay Handicap in recent times and prize money for the season amounted to $142,000.

The Jockey Premiership was won narrowly by Justin Stanley with 26 wins from Bonnie Thompson on 24 wins. Justin has been a regular visitor to Townsville for a number of years and as well as taking out the Townsville Jockey Premiership was also the Queensland Provincial Premiership winner for the 2017/2018 with 103 wins.

The Trainers Premiership was taken out by Roy Chillemi with 21 wins and was a comfortable winner from Alby Molino on 15 wins. Roy Chillemi is also the trainer of our Horse of the Year, Grey Missile. Roy Chillemi travels regularly from Atherton to Townsville for our meetings and the Club owes him as well as the other trainers who travel the long distances to our meeting, a debt of gratitude. The standard of racing in Townsville remains quite strong and was evident when local horse Lady Skills was victorious in winning the Townsville Cup. With the up-coming lift in prize money for provincial racing the standard of racing will remain strong.
