Let’s Dance Hasta el Amanecer: The Functions of Code-Switching in Hispanic ‘Spanglish’ Music by Bilingual Singer by Emilia Rafaela Espinal Jones A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate Faculty of St. Cloud State University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in English: Teaching English as a Second Language December, 2020 Thesis Committee: Edward Sadrai, Chairperson John Madden Matthew Barton 2 Abstract This study examines the role code-switching plays in the creation of song lyrics by Hispanic Bilingual artists that feature more than one language. It points out what functions the switches fulfill and what patterns they produce. Furthermore, it also investigates whether these patterns are affected based on the matrix language of the song. The data collected comes from a variety of songs from different genres that fall under the musical term ‘Latin Music’.
