GAME 5 RECAP Tuesday, September 1, 2020 – Flyers 4, Islanders 3 (OT) at Scotiabank Arena: Scott Laughton tipped home a shot from Ivan Provorov 12:20 into overtime to give the Flyers a 4-3 win and force a sixth game in the series. The Islanders opened the scoring 1:20 into the first period on a goal by Mathew Barzal, but the Flyers answered with the next three – Claude Giroux tipped home a drive from Phil Myers with 4:15 to play in the second, and James van Riemsdyk scored 2:33 later to make it 2-1 at the intermission. Matt Niskanen then made it a two-goal game 4:32 into the third. But the Islanders charged back with two goals in 1:33 to tie it – first from Brock Nelson with 4:14 to play, and then from Derick Brassard with 2:41 left. That set the stage for Laughton’s winner, giving the Flyers their second extra-time win of the series. Carter Hart stopped 29 of 32 in the win, while Semyon Varlamov turned away 28. Stars of the Game: 1 – Scott Laughton; 2 – Claude Giroux; 3 – Josh Bailey.

NOTABLES

Scott Laughton scored his first career playoff overtime goal. He becomes the 32nd player in Flyers history to score an overtime winner.

Claude Giroux, James van Riemsdyk and Matt Niskanen each scored their first goal of the playoffs.

The Flyers came from behind to win a game for the first time this playoffs. They had been 0-4 when allowing the first goal.

GAME 4 RECAP Sunday, August 30, 2020 – Islanders 3, Flyers 2 at Scotiabank Arena: Third-period goals by J.G. Pageau and Brock Nelson put the game out of reach as the Islanders took a 3-1 series lead with the 3-2 win. Nelson started out the game’s scoring 6:52 into the second period, a goal the Flyers were able to answer when Sean Couturier deflected home a shot from Justin Braun with 4:41 left in the frame, tying the score at 1-1 at the second intermission. Pageau squeaked a puck home at the 7:18 mark of the third to make it 2-1, and then Nelson converted a 2-on-1 just under four minutes later to make it a two-goal game. Ivan Provorov scored with an extra attacker with 1:05 to play, but the Flyers couldn’t get another one past Thomas Greiss, who made 36 saves on the night. Brian Elliott turned aside 30 of 33 in the loss. Stars of the Game: 1 – Brock Nelson; 2 – Josh Bailey; 3 – Thomas Greiss.

Saturday, August 29, 2020 – Islanders 3, Flyers 1 at Scotiabank Arena: Tyler Pitlick gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead with just under six minutes to go in the first period, but the Islanders rebounded to score the next three goals and take the win in Game 3. Pitlick’s goal put the Flyers ahead until Matt Martin tied the game 7:12 into the second period. The game-winner came with just under six seconds left in the middle frame when Leo Komarov squeaked a puck through Carter Hart to make it 2-1. Anders Lee added insurance on the power play 3:41 into the third. Hart absorbed the loss with 26 saves, while Semyon Varlamov took the win with 26 saves of his own. Stars of the Game: 1 – Jordan Eberle; 2 – Adam Pelech; 3 – Tyler Pitlick.

GAMES SIX

This is the 42nd Game 6 of a playoff series in Flyers history. They are 21-20 in Game 6 regardless of the nature of the series.

This is the 11th time the Flyers have forced a Game 6 after trailing a series 3-1. They are trying to force a Game 7 for what would be the seventh time. They hold a record of 6-4 in the previous 10 occasions that match tonight’s circumstances.

Alain Vigneault’s teams have been down 3-1 on 7 occasions. He is trying to coach a team back from the deficit to a series win for what would be the third time. The previous two both came with the New York Rangers – first in the 2014 ECSF vs. Pittsburgh, and then in the 2015 ECSF vs. Washington.

Regardless of the series standings after four games (either down 3-1 or tied 2-2), this is the 20th time overall that the Flyers have faced elimination in a Game 6. They have forced a Game 7 in eight of those series.

The Flyers are 27-9 all-time in a seven-game series when winning Game 5. They are 15-5 in a series when winning Game 6.

HISTORY VS. ISLANDERS

The Flyers and Islanders are meeting in the playoffs for the fifth time, but for the first time in 33 years. The Flyers are 3-1 all time in the four series; on the three occasions where they won, they advanced to the Stanley Cup Final each time. The loss came in the 1980 Stanley Cup Final.

1975 Semifinals – Flyers won 4 games to 3 1980 Stanley Cup Final – Islanders won 4 games to 2 1985 Patrick Division Finals – Flyers won 4 games to 1 1987 Patrick Division Finals – Flyers won 4 games to 3

2019-20 SEASON SERIES Sunday, October 27, 2019 – NY Islanders 5, Flyers 3 at Nassau Coliseum Saturday, November 16, 2019 – NY Islanders 4, Flyers 3 (SO) at Wells Fargo Tuesday, February 11, 2020 – NY Islanders 5, Flyers 3 at Barclays Center Game 4 of the regular-season series, scheduled for March 24 in Philadelphia, was not played.

More details on the historical playoff series and the 2019-20 regular season series are available in the above-linked Series Playoff Guide.

CONNECTIONS

Flyers forward Nate Thompson played two seasons for the Islanders, in 2008-09 and 2009-10.

The Flyers lost a six-round series to the Washington Capitals in the First Round of the 2018 playoffs, a team coached by Islanders head coach Barry Trotz. Flyers defenseman Matt Niskanen played on that team, and he and Trotz went on to win the 2018 Stanley Cup. There are 12 players on the Flyers’ current playoff roster who played at least one game in that series.

Lou Lamoriello’s tenure as the general manager of the New Jersey Devils included five playoff series against the Flyers. The Devils won in 1995, 2000 and 2012, while the Flyers prevailed in 2004 and 2010.

AROUND THE RINK

This series marks the sixth time in their history that the Flyers have won multiple overtime games in a series and the first time since the 2008 ECQF vs. Washington. The Flyers are 5-0 winning two games in OT in a series:

1977 QF vs TOR, won in 6 1980 PR vs EDM, won in 3 1995 ECSF vs NYR, won in 4 2000 ECSF vs PIT, won in 6 2008 ECQF vs WSH, won in 7

In the 1977 QF and 2000 ECSF series, the Flyers overcame two-game deficits to win – they lost the first two games in both series, and came back to win both in six games.

The Flyers have only had three overtime games in the same series once in their history, the 2003 ECQF vs Toronto. They won one of the three but won the series in seven games.

The Game 4 loss marked the first time since early January that the Flyers have lost back-to-back games. They had won their last 11 such occasions in the regular season and playoffs.

Carter Hart became the third Flyers goaltender to record back-to-back playoff shutouts when he did so in Games 3 and 4 vs. Montreal. The others are as follows:

1975 Quarterfinals vs. Toronto, Bernie Parent, Games 2 and 3 2010 Conference Finals vs. Montreal, Michael Leighton, Games 1 and 2

Leighton is the only goaltender in Flyers history to record three shutouts in a playoff series, having gone on to add a shutout in Game 4 of the 2010 Conference Finals.

Per NHL Stats and Information, Hart is the second-youngest goaltender in NHL history to record back-to-back shutouts in the playoffs, and just the fourth different goaltender to do so under the age of 23.
