Th e theme of this year’s conference is “IT’s a Big Deal.” It’s easy to overlook the fact that the “t” in the fi rst word is capitalized—it’s supposed to be “I.T.,” an abbreviation for “information technology.” Th e logo isn’t suggesting that KySTE is a big deal—the logo is asserting that the TECHNOLOGY that we’re all here to learn about is a big deal. And it truly is. Twenty years ago, if every piece of information technology were pulled out of a school district, almost no one would have noticed, and the technology probably all would have fi t in the bed of a pickup truck. Ten years ago, if the same thing happened, staff members wouldn’t have been able to get on the Internet, and email would have been gone, but we’d all have gone back to using encyclopedias and intercoms and not really much would Bryan Sweasy - President KySTE have changed. Today, though, if all technology were in an instant removed from schools, we’d hardly be able to function. We wouldn’t be able to feed students, we wouldn’t know who was absent or present, and we’d lose the ability to contact parents quickly in an emergency. Teachers wouldn’t be able to present their les- sons, students would lose access to a wealth of information, and many of the tools that we use to evaluate and to help struggling students would be gone. In some places, we couldn’t even get into the buildings AT ALL without magnetic keycards and security systems. I.T. has truly become a big deal in our schools, and it’s hoped that the 2011 KySTE Conference helps you to use the wide array of technology available to you today, as well as give you some insight into emerging technologies that you’ll be using tomorrow. You may notice that the format of the conference has been altered slightly. Sessions for teachers were compressed from three days down into two, so as to decrease the number of days teachers would need to be out of their classes. Th e “NEED to know” KIDS sessions were clumped together and moved to their own day, so attendees could attend these sessions without missing other sessions that they WANTED to see. A continental breakfast is being provided on Tuesday and Wednesday. Th e vendor hall has been given additional dedicated time. A hardwired Internet connection is available for all presenters. Th ese changes and dozens of smaller ones like them were all in response to suggestions made by last year’s attendees. You can help us make KySTE 2012 even better by completing the online survey that will be sent out shortly after this conference has ended. Finally, I would be remiss if I didn’t take this opportunity to thank the many KySTE members, vendor partners, and KDE staff members who have helped make this conference possible by donating time, materials, and services. Special thanks goes to the entire KySTE board, which you will fi nd listed on another page in this program. Th eir many hours of work have made this conference possible. And an extra special thanks goes out to you, the conference attendees. Th e conference would never happen without your participation and attendance. I hope you enjoy the conference and downtown Louisville. 2 2011 KySTE Technology Conference Agenda Monday, February 28, 2011 7:00 - 5:00 Registration 8:00 - 10:00 Invitation Only Meetings 10:00 - 3:00 Sessions for KIDS 10:00 - 3:00 Sessions for TRT/TIS 10:00 - 3:00 Sessions for STLP 3:00 - 4:00 KySTE Business Meeting Tuesday, March 1, 2011 7:00 - 8:15 Registration – Continental breakfast Archibald Room, Galt House Rivue Tower 8:30 - 10:00 KySTE Welcome/Opening Keynote by Ian Jukes - Living on the Future Edge - Ar- chibald Room Galt House 10:15 - 11:15 Concurrent Session 1 11:30 - 1:00 Vendor Hall Grand Opening with fi nger food and door prizes 1:00 - 2:00 Concurrent Session 2 2:15 - 3:15 Concurrent Session 3 3:30 - 4:30 Concurrent Session 4 Wednesday, March 2, 2011 8:00 - 9:00 Vendor Hall Open - Continental breakfast 9:00 - 10:00 Concurrent Session 5 10:15 - 11:15 Concurrent Session 6 11:30 - 12:30 Concurrent Session 7 12:45 - 1:45 Concurrent Session 8 2:00 - 3:00 Concurrent Session 9 3:00 - 5:00 Closing Session Keynote by Paul Mullins, KASA Administrator of the year, “1 to 1 Laptop Learning Initiative- A Framework Th at Prepares Your District To Begin Its Journey” and door prizes Have a great conference – KySTE Staff 3 Tuesday, March 1, Opening Keynote Ian Jukes - Living on the Future Edge Ian Jukes has been a teacher, an administrator, writer, consultant, university instructor and keynote speaker.
