1 Welcome

Welcome to the 2011 KySTE Technology Conference. Th e theme of this year’s conference is “IT’s a Big Deal.” It’s easy to overlook the fact that the “t” in the fi rst word is capitalized—it’s supposed to be “I.T.,” an abbreviation for “information technology.” Th e logo isn’t suggesting that KySTE is a big deal—the logo is asserting that the TECHNOLOGY that we’re all here to learn about is a big deal.

And it truly is. Twenty years ago, if every piece of information technology were pulled out of a school district, almost no one would have noticed, and the technology probably all would have fi t in the bed of a pickup truck. Ten years ago, if the same thing happened, staff members wouldn’t have been able to get on the Internet, and email would have been gone, but we’d all have gone back to using encyclopedias and intercoms and not really much would Bryan Sweasy - President KySTE have changed.

Today, though, if all technology were in an instant removed from schools, we’d hardly be able to function. We wouldn’t be able to feed students, we wouldn’t know who was absent or present, and we’d lose the ability to contact parents quickly in an emergency. Teachers wouldn’t be able to present their les- sons, students would lose access to a wealth of information, and many of the tools that we use to evaluate and to help struggling students would be gone. In some places, we couldn’t even get into the buildings AT ALL without magnetic keycards and security systems. I.T. has truly become a big deal in our schools, and it’s hoped that the 2011 KySTE Conference helps you to use the wide array of technology available to you today, as well as give you some insight into emerging technologies that you’ll be using tomorrow.

You may notice that the format of the conference has been altered slightly. Sessions for teachers were compressed from three days down into two, so as to decrease the number of days teachers would need to be out of their classes. Th e “NEED to know” KIDS sessions were clumped together and moved to their own day, so attendees could attend these sessions without missing other sessions that they WANTED to see. A continental breakfast is being provided on Tuesday and Wednesday. Th e vendor hall has been given additional dedicated time. A hardwired Internet connection is available for all presenters. Th ese changes and dozens of smaller ones like them were all in response to suggestions made by last year’s attendees. You can help us make KySTE 2012 even better by completing the online survey that will be sent out shortly after this conference has ended.

Finally, I would be remiss if I didn’t take this opportunity to thank the many KySTE members, vendor partners, and KDE staff members who have helped make this conference possible by donating time, materials, and services. Special thanks goes to the entire KySTE board, which you will fi nd listed on another page in this program. Th eir many hours of work have made this conference possible.

And an extra special thanks goes out to you, the conference attendees. Th e conference would never happen without your participation and attendance. I hope you enjoy the conference and downtown Louisville.

3 Tuesday, March 1, Opening Keynote Ian Jukes - Living on the Future Edge

Ian Jukes has been a teacher, an administrator, writer, consultant, university instructor and keynote speaker. He is the Director of the InfoSavvy Group, an international consulting group that provides leadership and program development in the areas of assessment and evaluation, strategic alignment, curriculum design and publication, professional development, planning, change management, hardware and software acquisition, information services, customized research, media services, and on-line training as well as conference keynotes and workshop presentations. Over the course of the past 10 years, Ian has worked with clients in more than 40 countries and made more than 9,000 presentations. He typically speaks to between 300,000 and 400,000 people a year. In August 2002 Consulting Magazine Online named him one of the top ten educational speakers in America.

Ian has written twelve books, 9 educational series and had more than 100 articles published in various journals. Ian is also the publisher and co-editor of the Committed Sardine Blog which is electronically distributed to more than 90,000 people in over 60 countries.

He is also the creator and co-developer of TechWorks, the internationally successful K-8 technology framework, and was the catalyst of the NetSavvy and InfoSavvy information literacy series. He has been a Contributing Editor for several journals and magazines, and is the author of the books “Teaching the Digital Generation: No More Cookie Cutter High Schools” with Ted McCain and Frank S. Kelly, “Windows on the Future” with Ted McCain, and “Net. Savvy: Building Information Literacy for the Classroom”. His most recent publications include “Understanding the Digital Generation: Teaching and Learning in the New Digital Landscape”, “Th e Digital Diet: Today’s Digital Tools in Small Bytes”, and “Living on the Future Edge: Windows on Tomorrow”. He is also working on the upcoming books “Literacy Is Not Enough: 21st Century Fluencies for the Digital Age”, and “Getting it Right: Aligning Technology for 21st Century Learning”.

Ian has also worked for several years with architectural fi rms to help facilitate planning new learning environments by taking the groups through a visioning process to help them align the thinking of the community (school board, ad- ministration, parents, students, community) about what new facilities should look like and how their designing should align with the learning and instructional intentions of the school/district. Over the course of the past 20 years he has been involved in the design process for more than 60 new schools.

Ian is an educator fi rst and foremost. His focus has consistently been on the compelling need to restructure our edu- cational institutions so that they become relevant to the current and future needs of children. His rambunctious, ir- reverent and highly-charged presentations and articles emphasize many of the practical issues related to ensuring that change is meaningful. As a registered educational evangelist, his self-avowed mission in life is to ensure that children are properly prepared for the future rather than society’s past. As a result, his material tends to focus on many of the pragmatic issues that provide the essential context for educational restructuring.

When Ian is not travelling and speaking, he spends his time sailing in the Gulf Islands on the west coast of British Columbia aboard his boat, appropriately named “Th e Committed Sardine”. Keynote Sponsored by:

7 AWARDS Outstanding Leader: Naomi Cornette Born and raised in Rush, Kentucky, Naomi Arnold Cornette is a true product of a combina- tion of our Kentucky Schools. She attended all of her twelve years in Boyd County Public Schools and graduated in 1979. She then went on to complete her Bachelor’s Degree at Eastern Kentucky University in Communication Disorders. In 1983, her employment his- tory began with one year as a Speech/Language Pathologist in Johnson County Schools fol- lowed by thirteen years in Carroll County Schools. After achieving her Masters and Rank I in Education Technology from the University of Louisville, Naomi took over as PRISM Technology Coordinator with the Kentucky Department of Education. She then moved into the position of KETS Regional Coordinator for Region Four and later became the fi rst coordinator of the Technology Resource Teacher (TRT) Program along with Professional Development Direct for the Kentucky Department of Education. For the past ten years, Naomi has served as Chief Information Offi cer for Owen County Schools and is currently in her twenty-eighth year of service in this combination of Kentucky Schools. During her years of service, some of her accomplishments include selection to attend the fi rst ISTE Leadership Academy, ser- vice on the NETS Writing Team for National Pre-Service Teacher Technology Standards, and presenter at NECC and NSBA’s Technology & Learning Conferences. Residing in Owen County, she is married to her high school sweetheart, Ray Cornette. Th ey have one son, Chris, who is currently a senior at Eastern Kentucky University. Outstanding Teacher: Michelle Lee As a fourth grade teacher of students who will complete in a global marketplace I realized early in my career the importance of incorporating technology in my classroom. I believed it was essential to provide my students with the 21st century skills they needed to survive in the “Digital Age” and compete in the global marketplace. Little did I know this belief would dramatically impact student achievement as well as the overall success of all students in my classroom. At 42 with three grown children enrolled in college, I decided to pursue a career education. When I returned to the college classroom I found out that I liked school so much that I have really never left. Now in my 6th year of teaching I continue to “love learning”. I am continually enrolled in online professional development courses through Kentucky e-learning and Fayette County Schools. Th ese courses are intentionally designed to integrate technology into all content areas. What I have learned from these courses has dramatically infl uenced my teaching style and has enabled me to reach children in ways never before available. Technology allows me to create experiences and oppor- tunities for my students that they would otherwise not have. I discovered that technology not only closes the achieve- ment gap, but in essence, it levels the playing fi eld for all children. Today our students use technology in every aspect of their lives so I ask myself, why not use it to ensure that all students experience academic success in my classroom? Outstanding Tech Support: Dan Klaber Dan Klaber grew up in Northern Kentucky and now lives in Cold Spring, KY with his wife Jenny. Th ey have 2 children and 5 grandchildren. He graduated from Morehead State University with an MBA / CIS specialty. Dan has worked in the computer / IT fi eld since 1980. Th is includes both work in the private and public sectors. He has worked in the K-12 environment since 1995. Along with holding the position of Network Administrator for Pendleton County Schools, he also was the KETS Engineer for Region 4. At the county level, Dan served on a committee with the county government to establish wireless broad- band for Pendleton residents. Dan has done several technical presentations for regional meetings and at state KySTE conferences, including webcasting, computer forensics, and intrusion detection. Dan is active with mission work at his church and has traveled internationally. On a trip to El Salvador, he set up a computer lab for an elementary school there, utilizing open source software to help students learn to use computers. 8 AWARDS
