After a successful career in Funds Management and Financial Services Michael Ward joined his brother Chris Michael Ward in the ownership and management of Triple Crown. Their stable star and Australia's fastest sprinter, Redzel And His 'Bomb Proof' Redzel was purchased by the astute brothers, from the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale in 2014 for A$120,000.

Triple Crown Syndicate Director and Redzel Owner Michael Ward speaks to Everest Diaries.

Q - How did you choose to buy Redzel? How did the story begin ? A - Triple Crown were one of the first to spot the talent in the progeny of Snitzel having purchased Group 1 winner Hot Snitzel and Group 2 winner Flying Snitzel out of his first few crops for just A$60,000 and A$25,000 respectively, and Redzel was a yearling that very much caught our eye at the Magic Millions Yearling Sale. He has a speed pedigree that appeals to our ownership being out of the Golden Slipper placed mare Millrich, and is a half- brother to the very talented Group 3 winner Danerich. A very fluent mover, he looked a classy horse from the very start.

Q - Who are the people behind Triple Crown Syndicates which own Redzel ? A - There are many great stories behind the ownership of Redzel and it is essentially an underdog story of a group of everyday Australians, coming together to compete at the very highest level of racing. Within the ownership there are people from all walks of life - from a taxi driver and a teacher, to a concreter and a group of policeman. For some, this has been their first foray into racehorse ownership, while others have owned several horses, yet the journey Redzel has taken them on has been a dream come true for all. There are 17 listed Redzel wins race 7 The Everest owners in Redzel and 30 owners all up, and below I document Credit-Gallop Magazine the individual stories of some of these owners.

The Snowden racing website quotes the well-respected father and son training duo as saying, “Equine welfare and tailoring every aspect of the horses' care, nutrition What Makes Redzel and training to bring out its best is paramount”. That seems to be their motto and Everest (2017) is proof The Best Sprinter In The World? of their ability to bring out the best in their charge. Peter Snowden has trained for the best in Australia. He started his career as a jockey, learning the ins and outs of the trade before signing up to become a trainer. He was immediately taken on board by the Hawkes' racing stable. From there he went on to manage for both the Inghams and also Darley. Peter was joined by his son Paul at Darley. Eventually both Peter and Paul decided to set up their own racing stables and Redzel is a testament to their hard work and experience in bringing about the best in a horse' ability.

This week, we interview Mr. Peter Snowden at his racing stables at Randwick.

Q - Has Redzel started training for The Everest? Are there any lead-up races planned for Redzel ? Where will he go next ? A - Yes he has. He returned from a spell about five weeks ago and has begun his training for The Everest. He will start off (in the lead-up races) on the 1st of September by running in the 1000m Gr.3 Concorde Stakes. Two weeks later he on the 15th of September he will run in the 1100m Gr.2 event, The Shorts. That's four weeks from The Shorts to The Everest.

And after the Everest, a lot will depend on what happens then but more than likely he will go to Melbourne and run in the Darley Classic. This was the same race he ran in last year.

(Redzel won the 2017 Darley Classic, laying claim to the title of the nation's best sprinter at Flemington)

Q – There are many sprinters in Australia and quite a few of the top in the world sprinters find their way to your stables. So what is special about Redzel's Redzel scores in the Gr.1 Doomben 10,000 traning and his personality which makes him Credit-Aushorse different, making him the best sprinter in the world ? Michael Hawkes epotimises the pinnacle of racing success in Australia, yet the soft spoken, self-effacing man is endearing in his visible affection and protectiveness for the mighty Chautauqua. Although the telephone interview had some initial technical difficulties, Michael Hawkes: eventually the conversation started flowing. As Hawkes opened up, I realized how warm and easy-going the leading trainer was in person. For him, everything The Man, The Horse and The Gray Flash revolved around the well-being of his charge and no fish was too small for this big trainer.

Q: Firstly, congratulations on Chautauqua crossing the first barrier trial and of course on seeing him do well. We were all a bit concerned over the last few months. But you and your team have shown singular patience. What is it about Chautauqua which inspires that patience in you? Someone else would have given up long ago. A: When you are dealing with such an incredible horse like Chautauqua, a horse which has had just 32 starts in his career, a horse who has the will to beat the system, you have to have patience. We are known as a patient stable and patience gets results. Why he didn't jump out when he was supposed to, we just don't know. He has a mind of his own and he is a very quirky horse. When he doesn't want to do something, he won't do it. When you see him run, you know that the international Group One winner hasn't packed up yet. When he is really had enough, he will let us now. Until then, we have been persistent with him.

Q: Has there been any change to his routine or his training or the last few months ? A: Chautauqua likes routine. He doesn't like change. He likes his own pattern. For example, whether in Sydney or Melbourne, his work rider, travels with him. It's the same girl. She knows him and is able to get the best results from him.

Another example is every day at 4:00 p.m. he goes on the Trapeze Artistdit walker. So every day at 4:00 p.m. he will be ready to head The Chautauqua Story - byCr Edwinaedit: Racing Throsby Post down to the machine. He knows exactly what is wrong Credit-Secretariat's World and what is right.

His scintillating stoicism in the face of my mawkish questioning left me no doubt about the generous warmth his staff and partners must feel towards him.

Q: What was the basis of your partnership with The Everest? How did it all begin ? A: Our company here, Inglis, we like to support innovation. We think that the racing regulator in our jurisdiction, Racing NSW is very innovative by introducing The Everest. We thought we should support it.

We also thought that The Everest was a better race to connect with every day people. It's in the new format and creates conversations all year-round.

The average person on the street doesn't understand the concept of a Group One race (which The Everest isn't) but they are still interested in this format of racing they just understand that it's an Australian race with predominantly Australian runners. One of the things that has changed in the last few years is that the (Gr.1, 3200m) Melbourne Cup has become very international.

The Melbourne cup is a staying race whereas Australian thoroughbred bloodlines are much more oriented towards producing sprinters. The Melbourne Cup in the last 50 years has been a bit of an anomaly with what we (Australians) produce as breeders. Australian sprinters have been always the best in the world our biggest races for a distance which we are not breeding for Is not consistent with our breeding industry The Everest the richest race on turf in the world aligned with our breeding industry is actually producing a broader appeal.
