Make no mistake, the Second City may be the nation’s 3rd largest city, but Chicago stands proudly as the epicenter of the multisport movement. Since 1983, the Chicago Triathlon has welcomed more than 250,000 participants across the finish line. By our count, 40% of these finishers were first-timers, earning the coveted title of “triathlete” right here in our backyard. In 2016, we plan to add more than 2,500 newbies to that count. SoCal may have invented our sport, but Chi-Town really is Tri-Town. Beyond the event’s history and behind the huge numbers lies the answer to: “Why Chicago?” History indicates the sport was born in 1974 as a cross-training opportunity within the San Diego Track Club. The first event featured 40 individuals who ran a 10k, then biked 8k and later swam 500 meters in the dark using car headlights.

THE CHICAGO PARK DISTRICT, 2014 The Power of Parks An Assessment of Chicago Parks’ Economic Impact Table of Contents Introduction 1 Summary 2 Definitions of Park Categories 4 The Power of Parks 6 Park Impact on Property Values 7 The Impact of Events, Special Assets and Tourism 13 Major Park Events 14 Museums and Harbors 16 Incremental Tourism 17 The Value of Parks 20 Acknowledgements 24 Appendix – List of Parks Managed by the Chicago Park District 25 Introduction Parks are key resources in cities—a source of pride for city citizens, an attraction for visitors and an enhancement to the quality of life for residents. The Chicago Park District is one of the largest municipal park managers in the nation and controls over 600 assets including parks, beaches and harbors. To external observers, it might be most known thanks to some of its landmark locations which are among the most unique in the country, but the impact of its activities reaches neighborhoods throughout Chicago, serving over 40 million people annually. While the benefits of parks are mostly intuitive for residents and visitors alike, is there a quantitative way to measure their value? Studies are few, often limited in scope, and data is mostly anecdotal. Therefore, at the end of 2013, the Chicago Park District embarked in an initiative to objectively assess the impact of its assets on Chicago’s economy. For this effort, The Chicago Park District partnered with Civic Consulting Alliance, Global Economics Group, and Roland Berger Strategy Consultants. The 585 parks that the Chicago Park District owns were included in the analysis, making it one of the most comprehensive studies ever undertaken of a park system’s economic benefit.
