All partners are kindly asked to provide current information which can be inserted here. The idea is to keep all project partners informed on the same level, to exchange information, to ask project related current questions, to prepare meetings and to make appointments as well as to prepare common activities (publications, new projects, etc.). Prof. em. Dr. Michael Succow Prof. em. Dr. Michael Succow, Jahrgang 1941, studierte und promovierte im Fach Biologie an der Universität in Greifswald. 1981 habilitierte er an der Akademie der Landwirtschaftswissenschaften der DDR und wurde 1987 zum Professor ernannt. In der Wendezeit war Michael Succow auf Drängen der Bürgerbewegungen kurzzeitig stellvertretender Umweltminister der Modrow-Regierung der DDR und konnte mit einem engagierten Mitarbeiter- Team das Nationalparkprogramm der DDR erarbeiten und auf den Weg bringen. Im Jahr 1992 erfolgte seine Berufung zum Universitätsprofessor an die Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Universität Greifswald. Als Direktor des Botanischen Institutes und des Botanischen Gartens, das er durch die Einwerbung von vier Stiftungsprofessuren zu einem interdisziplinären Lehr- und Forschungsinstitut ausbaute, entwickelte er den Studiengang Landschaftsökologie und Naturschutz. Es begann eine erfolgreiche moorkundliche sowie landschaftsökologisch-naturschutzorientierte Forschungstätigkeit im In- und Ausland. Das bedeutete die Intensivierung der bereits 1990 begonnenen Arbeit zum Schutz bzw. zur nachhaltigen Nutzung von Ökosystemen in Transformationsländern des Ostens, der Mongolei und China. Es konnten zahlreiche Naturschutzgroßprojekte initiiert werden. UNESCO-Weltnaturerbe- Gebiete in Kamtschatka, im Lena-Delta, in Kasachstan und der Kaukasus-Region, Biosphärenreservate der UNESCO in Kirgisistan, Kasachstan und Usbekistan sowie Nationalparke in der Mongolei, in Georgien, in Russland und Weißrussland sind das Ergebnis. 1997 erhielt Michael Succow den Alternativen Nobelpreis der Right Livelihood Award Foundation in Stockholm. Das Preisgeld bildete den finanziellen Grundstock der Michael Succow Stiftung zum Schutz der Natur, die seit 1999 Naturschutzprojekte im In- und Ausland durchführt. Michael Succow ist Mitglied in zahlreichen wissenschaftlichen und gesellschaftlichen Gremien, in Naturschutzverbänden und Stiftungen sowie Einrichtungen auf Landes- und Bundesebene und berät in Fragen von Naturschutz-, Landnutzungs- und Klimarelevanz. -

MARION DÖNHOFF WORKING PAPER 2015 Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency in Central Asia: Prospects for German Engagement KOMILA NABIYEVA May 2015 I Marion Dönhoff Working Papers About the Publisher The Michael Succow Foundation was established in 1999 as the first charitable conservation foundation under the Civil Code in the new federal states of Germany. The prize money from the Right Livelihood Award, bestowed upon Prof. Dr. Michael Succow in 1997, was donated as the basis capital for the foundation, which aims to ‘Preserve and Sustain’ the ecological balance. The Michael Succow Foundation is an operational foundation on the national and international level. It is engaged in the development and protection of national parks and biosphere reserves in the transformational countries of the former Eastern bloc (Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Russia). For almost 10 years, the recognition and conservation of Germany’s national natural heritage has been the foundation’s most important emphasis nationally. Accordingly, the foundation is currently managing 13 Nature Conservation Areas in north-eastern Germany, with other areas soon to follow. The goal is the development of wilderness oases, accompanied by special opportunities to visit and experience nature firsthand, which are meant to foster a deeper understanding for the re-transformation of the Central European cultural landscapes into wilderness. Professor Michael Succow and his deeply committed team are supported by an honorary foundation board and countless active volunteers. The foundation works in close co-operation with the Institute of Botany and Landscape Ecology of the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University in Greifswald, as well as with many other national and international research facilities, i.e., the International Institute for Deserts, Flora and Fauna in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. -

ANNUAL REPORT 2016 May 2017 1. Introduction The Greifswald Mire Centre (GMC) is a cooperation between the University of Greifswald, Michael Succow Foundation, and the Institute of Sustainable Development of Landscapes of the Earth (DUENE e.V.). The GMC was founded in early 2015, based on a Memorandum of Understanding. This annual report summarises the development of GMC during its third year of existence: It chronologically lists mile stones of the year, outlines the current structure and gives an impression of selected external assessments of the GMC. 2. Research and Science Hot of the press I: new book about productive use of wet peatlands 19/04/2016 The GMC scientists Dr. Wendelin Wichtmann, Christian Schröder and Prof. Hans Joosten edited the book “Paludiculture – productive use of wet peatlands”. On 288 pages this book, which is released by Schweizerbart Science Publishers, provides extensive information on wet peatland utilisation (paludiculture) with respect to policy making, management, practice and science. It explains the principles of wise peatland utilisation and encourages the worldwide implementation of paludiculture as the only possible form of sustainable utilisation of organic soils. The book can now be ordered at Schweizerbart Publishers. 2 Hot of the press II: „Peatland Restoration and Ecosystem Services“ 27/06/2016 „Peatland Restoration and Ecosys- tem Services: Science, Policy, and Practice“ is the title of the first, up-to-date and comprehensive book on peatland restoration and ecosystem ser- vices. For the 493-page English-language book, Cambridge University Press claims to have brought together world-class experts to look at the issue from an environmental, social and eco- nomic perspective. -
