SAN RAMON, California, May 10, (AP): If Epic Games hopes to dismantle the fortress surrounding Apple’s iP- hone and its app store, the video game maker probably will need to roll out some heavier artillery heading into the second week of a trial threatening Apple’s $2 trillion empire. So far, at least, Epic has been having trouble proving its allegations that the iPhone maker’s 13-year-old app store has turned into an illegal monopoly. Epic, the maker of the popular Fortnite game, contends Apple has been gouging app makers by charging com- missions ranging from 15% to 30% for in-app transac- tions because it forbids other options on its iPhone, iPad and iPod. When Epic tried to evade the commissions with an alternative payment system in Fortnite last August, Apple ousted it from the app store to set up a legal show- down that could force it to lower its fees. Apple contends the commissions are a reasonable toll paid by a minority of the 1.8 million apps in its store to help cover the more than $100 billion it has invested in mobile software, The Cupertino, California, company also maintains its ironclad control over apps allowed on its mobile devices helps protect its customers’ security and privacy. At times, it seemed like Cary, North Carolina-based Epic was helping make Apple’s case as much as its own during the the fi rst week of the trial being held in an Oak- land, California, courtroom. For instance, at one point during his two days on the witness stand, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney acknowledged he personally used an iPhone instead of smartphones run- ning on Google’s Android software because he thought Apple offered better security and privacy controls. Sweeney also acknowledged Apple made changes to iPhone’s software to help make it possible for Fortnite players to compete against each other while one was on a phone and the other was on a video game console. The expansion of so-called “cross-platform” play helped pro- pel Fortnite’s growth to more than 400 million users. Other internal documents showed Epic’s executives profusely thanking Apple for the support Fortnite was getting in the app store. Other evidence raised questions about whether Epic’s efforts to create a competing app store that imposes a commission of only 12% will pay off. The store is ex- pected to post a profi t ranging from $15 million to $36 million by 2024, but it will still have run up cumulative losses $654 million to $854 million, according to Epic’s internal projections presented at the trial.

LONDON: Microsoft is pledg- ing to let business and public sector customers in the Euro- pean Union keep cloud com- puting data inside the 27-na- tion bloc to avert concerns about U.S. government access to sensitive information. Microsoft “will go beyond our existing data storage com- mitments and enable you to process and store all your data in the EU,” said Brad Smith, the U.S. technology giant’s president. “In other words, we will not need to move your data outside the EU,” Smith wrote in a blog post Thursday. Microsoft is responding to customers that want stronger commitments on so-called data residency, Smith said. The updates will apply to the company’s core cloud services including Azure, Microsoft 365, and Dynamics 365. Transatlantic data protec- tion has been a growing con- cern since the European Un- ion’s top court struck down a data sharing agreement last year known as Privacy Shield. The court said the agreement, which allowed businesses to transfer data to the U.S. under the EU’s strict data privacy rules, was invalid because it didn’t go far enough to prevent the American government from snooping on user data. Microsoft, which operates data centers in 13 European countries including France, Germany and Switzerland, will challenge any government request for an EU public sector or commercial customer’s per- sonal data when there’s a law- ful basis for doing so, Smith said. Limited vaccine supply As cases rise, India ‘vaccinations’ falter

BENGALURU, India, May 10, (AP): Since India opened vaccinations to all adults this month, hoping to tame a dis- astrous coronavirus surge sweeping across the country, the pace of administering the shots has dropped with states say- ing they only have limited stock to give out. Cases meanwhile are still rising at record pace in the world’s second-most populous nation. Alongside a slow- down in vaccinations, states have gone to court over oxy- gen shortages as hospitals struggle to treat a running line of COVID-19 patients. On Sunday, India reported 403,738 confi rmed cases, in- cluding 4,092 deaths. Overall, India has over 22 million confi rmed infections and 240,000 deaths. Experts say both fi gures are undercounts. India’s Supreme Court said Saturday it would set up a national task force consisting of top experts and doctors to conduct an “oxygen audit” to determine whether supplies from the federal government were reaching states. Complaints of oxygen shortages have dominated the top court recently, which stepped in earlier this week to make sure the federal government provided more medical oxygen to hos- pitals in the capital, New Delhi. Mukherjee The country’s massive vaccination drive kicked off sluggishly in January when cases were low and exports of vaccines were high, with 64 million doses going overseas. But as infections started to rise in March and April, India’s exports drastically slowed down so doses went to its own population. Demand States scale back vaccine orders One reason for the drop in shots is that there are just not enough available, experts say. Supports HBCU students Rapper Scott fl exes philanthropic arms

LOS ANGELES, May 10, (AP): Travis Scott, the rapper famous for his string of stylish hip-hop hits, from “SICKO MODE” to “Highest in the Room,” and for the wild mosh pits at his concerts, has been fl exing his philanthropic arms. In October, Scott tweeted that he’d pay a semes- ter’s tuition to fi ve students at historically Black col- leges and universities. He chose some of the recipi- ents via social media, and a month later he launched his charitable Cactus Jack Foundation. The foun- dation partnered with his hometown of Houston to distribute 50,000 free meals to residents during the Texas freeze in February. For his efforts, the Gram- my-nominated rapper, whose real name is Jacques Web- ster, was one of fi ve recipi- ents announced recently for the fi rst RAD — Red Carpet Advocacy — impact awards, which honor cultural fi gures who “inspire purpose” in their work.
