The Ophicleide was used throughout the 19th century to provide a bass in brass and military bands and in the brass section of the orchestra, before gradually being superseded by the Tuba. It is most famed for its use in Berlioz’s ‘Symphonie fantastique’ and ‘Benvenuto Cellini’, along with Mendelssohn’s ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’ Overture.
