School at Mass Our Lady of Grace School

Every month while school is in session, Father Sam celebrates Mass for the entire school from kindergarten to grade eight. This year our first Mass was on September 13th. During the most blessed part of the Mass, when Fa- ther consecrates the Blessed Sacrament, he invites the students with birthdays during the month to come and circle the . This is always very special for the children involved.

Mrs. LuAnn Ensor, kindergarten teacher and Eucharistic Minister, often helps with giving out com- munion to the students and staff at OLGS’ School-at-Mass once a month. Each of the younger stu- dents in kindergarten, first and second grade have been assigned a prayer partner. The sixth grade students work with the kindergarten class. The partners go to Mass together. They worship together by praying, singing, and going up to communion. The partnership continues between the prayer part- ners as the students travel to seventh and first and then finally eighth and second. This relationship continues to build through the three years. Often the prayer partners work on other activities such as parties, arts and crafts. This matching up of the older and younger students gives a “family feel” to our school. The older mentoring the younger. It is a very fine program with many benefits.

Every good and perfect gift comes from above James 1:17

At the end of Masses on October 15 and 16, members of the OLG Knights of Columbus and OLG Outreach Ministry will be distributing baby bottles to parishioners to fill with spare change to help support the Pregnancy North, Inc. lo- cated at 6805 York Road (21212). Financial support in the form of a check is also appreciated.

The Pregnancy Center North, Inc. is a non-profit organiza- tion with Catholic roots which assists over 800 women and their unborn children annually. It encourages a rever- ence for human life as it helps educate women to become responsible, loving, confident mothers. Through the educa- tional incentive component, the pregnancy center offers many items for the babies.

On the weekend of October 22-23, members of these two organizations will be available before and after Masses to collect your offerings.

As always, we thank you for your support for others in need.

Conscience

This month we have begun to meet with the candidates for first reconciliation, and their par- ents. It might be a good time for a refresher on an important topic: conscience. Conscience today has been twisted all out of recognition. Conscience has come to mean, “If it feels good, do it” or “If I think its right, then its all right.” Thus, the I, the self, the me, frighteningly, is the measurement of all things.

Conscience, however, is tougher than that. It is far too important to be left up to the self alone, where there are too many built in tendencies to self-interest and self deception. We need to look be- yond ourselves.

The first step is to consult the church. The church, after all, has two thousand years of accu- mulated wisdom. It has mystics and who struggled with life issues. How did St. Elizabeth Ann Seton handle the death of her husband, Monica her wayward son, Augustine his guilt, Theresa her ter- minal illness, Ignatius the loss of a job, or John of the Cross his depression? Knowing the teaching of the church is one element in the formation of conscience.

Second, consult the Holy Spirit. We must not rush into judgment, but pray for guidance. God has a definite, unique, and beautiful plan for what is to become the life of each one of us. God wants us to experience His presence in our lives, to follow His plan for us, and so to experience His love, and peace, and joy. Therefore, although His will for us may not be our will for us, as Psalm 40 says so well: To do your will, O God, is my delight.

Third, within the faith community, there are always the wise to be consulted. You know, con- sult those who know you well, have your best interest at heart, and who possess a deeper spiritual insight. That person(s) who lives beyond the pressures of advertising and the tyrannies of possessing the latest “must have” fashions and phones. Wise people who have experienced life and its pains but have found a center in God.

Conscience is not a whim and it certainly is not that insidious pride of only consulting with one’s self or how one feels. No, conscience is a process, a necessary process of consulting with God, the church, and the spiritually wise of the community. Then, no matter how grievous a mistake you might make in your final decision, you did your moral best, and God is pleased!
