    Progress Report Narrative Vision and Official Launch The Capital Area Promise is a collaborative initiative between Baton Rouge’s education institutions—LSU, Southern University, and Baton Rouge Community College—to guarantee that all students have the opportunity to enroll in college and/or enter the workforce with skills to succeed. These institutions work closely with the East Baton Rouge Parish School System, surrounding districts, and key state agencies to make the Promise a comprehensive and inclusive effort. While the Promise reflects our community’s broad commitments, its specific goals include: 1. Increasing the number of opportunities and certified staff in early childhood education 2. Expanding college campus and workplace tours for fifth through ninth graders 3. Increasing the number of students participating in summer employment and internships 4. Increasing the percentage of high school students in East Baton Rouge Parish who are prepared for college or technical education through dual enrollment credits and articulation opportunities 5. Increasing the percentage of East Baton Rouge Parish students that place at college level math and English 6. Increasing the percentage of students who earn degrees and/or technical certifications 7. Increasing the percentage of BRCC students who successfully transfer to LSU, Southern University, or another four-year college/university 8. Increasing the percentage of LSU and Southern University students who graduate with a bachelor’s and/or advanced degrees 9. Reducing barriers and increasing awareness around college affordability 10. Jones is a seasoned public servant with nearly two decades of service at local, state, and federal levels. Jones is a 2001 Baton Rouge Rotary Club Scholar and honor graduate of Istrouma High School and Technology Magnet. She pursued a career in secondary education with a concentration in social studies, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge. Jones began her career at Louisiana School for the Deaf and Visually Impaired (LSDVI) as an intern in the Admissions and Records Department and was later promoted to Admissions and Records Coordinator in 2015. Each of these roles has provided a wealth of knowledge and unique leadership skills, which are instrumental in Jones’ continued success within the district. Joe Amacker Joe Amacker is a forward-thinking Educational Technology leader with knowledge and experiences that span K-12, University level and both public and private sector. As a 1997 graduate of Port Allen High School, Amacker had an early interest in technology and spent most of his free time building PC’s for family and friends. This interest was further fostered when Amacker chose Southern University’s department of Computer Science as the place to continue to grow in his technology career.

Implement policies established by the institution's management board to achieve cohort graduation rate and graduation productivity goals that are consistent with institutional peers. The Finish What You Start Campaign, implemented in Fall 2011, was designed to strongly encourage students to complete the courses they attempted and reduce the number of withdrawals. In Fall 2011, student withdrawals decreased by 4.5%. The Fall 2012 year goal has been set to reduce the number of withdrawals by 0.25%. Instituted in Fall 2011, the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence (CTLE) supports student retention and success by assisting with closing the loop between learner performances and teaching effectiveness. A main focus of CTLE has been to increase student retention and persistence rates from 1st to 2nd year by providing ongoing academic advisement for students, and by exposing faculty to the best practices in millennial student pedagogy. Now in its 2nd year of inception, CTLE continues to provide the following services: Intrusive academic advisement for all incoming first year freshman students. Advisement sessions are encouraged via CTLE course registration holds which mandate student/advisor interaction at least twice each semester of the Freshman year. First Year Experience lectures and workshops that provide assistance with establishing and maintaining personal, social, and financial health, employing strategies for academic success in college, developing life and career goals, and understanding pertinent information about Southern University-Baton Rouge.
