Reprinted with the kind permission of CSIRO Publishing. Preface: Recommendations and acknowledgments As the image on the cover of this plan indicates, the Arnhemland Plateau is truly unique. In the past it has perhaps been under-appreciated because of its isolation and distance from our day to day lives. However, it is in many respects the Northern Territory’s Amazon: a region of unparalleled diversity and beauty that is worth protecting at all costs. The purpose of this management plan is to set a framework for monitoring and managing the Plateau that will hopefully prove useful for coordinating fire management and monitoring its success. A few of the techniques recommended, particularly increased emphasis on walking, and the introduction of fire suppression, have been talked about but perhaps not emphasized enough in the past. Integrating management of the Plateau as a whole unit rather than by district is an important development of this plan, to be sure. -

Evolutionary Relationships in Eucalyptus Sens. Lat. – a Synopsis
Euclid - Online edition Evolutionary relationships in Eucalyptus sens. lat. – a synopsis This article complements the introductory essay about eucalypts included in the "Learn about Eucalypts" section. Its aim is to provide an up-to-date account of the outcomes of research derived from different groups during the past 5 years relating to relationships within Eucalyptus s.s. As such it includes only those publications and hypotheses relating to higher level relationships of major groupings within the eucalypts. Some of the research reported below also provides insights into biogeographic relationships of the eucalypt group – in large part these are not the focus of this article and are not discussed in detail. Introduction The first comprehensive classification of the eucalypts was published by Blakely in 1934, in which he treated more than 600 taxa, building on earlier work of Maiden and Mueller. Blakely's classification remained the critical reference for Eucalyptus taxonomists for the next 37 years when a new but informal classification was published by Pryor and Johnson (1971). In this work the authors divided the genus into seven subgenera, and although of an informal nature, presented a system of great advance on Blakely's treatment. The small genus Angophora was retained. The next 20 years saw much debate about the naturalness of Eucalyptus and whether other genera should be recognized (e.g., Johnson 1987). Based on morphological data, Hill and Johnson in 1995 proposed a split in the genus and recognition of the genus Corymbia. This new genus of c. 113 species, comprised the ghost gums and the bloodwoods, and Hill and Johnson concluded that Corymbia is the sister group to Angophora, with the synapomorphy of the distinctive cap cells on bristle glands (Ladiges 1984) being unambiguous. -

Australian Plants Society Loddon-Murray Group Native Plant Newsletter JANUARY– MARCH 2021 Edition Keith Bienvenu 17 June 1947– 4 February 2021 Loddon Murray APS Members are saddened by the loss of their friend Keith Bienvenu who passed away recently following cancer. Standing at the ceme- tery at Lake Boga on a hot mallee day overlooking the beautiful lake, we said goodbye to a good friend, a large number of members were present. We lis- tened to stories from his family, friends and workmates. Keith was always ready to step in and help and loved a garden visit to their place, maybe it was just an excuse to show off his amazing shed. Andrew Farley spoke at the service on Keith’s contribution to A.P.S. Keith Bienvenu, and his wife Ann joined the Australian Plant Society-Loddon Murray Group on 15/6/2010, following the Easter Murrabit Market where our group held a stall. Andrew Farley recalls: I remember that day as I was standing on our APS site and this bloke walked up and started talking to me. Next thing he says, “We are going to join.” Well, I hadn’t even given my little spiel about how good our APS Club was. He said his name was Keith. He pointed and said “That’s my wife Ann.” As they were about to leave, he repeated, that they were going to join. True to his word, from that moment on they hardly missed a meeting or an outing. Keith and Ann were very committed members and served on our committee for many years. -

Approved Conservation Advice for Atalaya Collina
This Conservation Advice was approved by the Minister / Delegate of the Minister on: 16/12/2008 Approved Conservation Advice (s266B of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999) Approved Conservation Advice for Atalaya collina This Conservation Advice has been developed based on the best available information at the time this Conservation Advice was approved; this includes existing plans, records or management prescriptions for this species. Description Atalaya collina, Family Sapindaceae, also known as Yarwun Whitewood, is a small spreading tree to 5 m with light grey rough bark. Leaves are compound with one or two pairs of glossy green, discolorous, narrowly elliptic leaflets to 7 cm long. Flowers are small, cream, to 8 mm diameter and clustered in dense terminal panicles. Fruit is a single seeded samara (dry winged fruit). It is distinguished from the closely related A. salicifolia and A. multiflora by the leaves with 1 or 2 pairs of usually narrow elliptic leaflets, the larger inflorescences, hairy petals and hairless fruits (Reynolds, 1991; Barry & Thomas, 1994; Harden et al., 2006). Conservation Status Atalaya collina is listed as endangered. This species is eligible for listing as endangered under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (Cwlth) (EPBC Act) as, prior to the commencement of the EPBC Act, it was listed as endangered under Schedule 1 of the Endangered Species Protection Act 1992 (Cwlth). Atalaya collina is also listed as endangered under the Nature Conservation Act 1992 (Queensland). Distribution and Habitat Atalaya collina is known from only two populations: west of Gladstone at Yarwun, where only 10 trees of an even age survive, and near Ubobo, west of Miriam Vale, Queensland. -

Callister Centre for Environmental Management, University of Ballarat, PO Box 663 Ballarat, Victoria 3353, AUSTRALIA Abstract: The vegetation of Peery Lake area, Paroo-Darling National Park (32°18’–32°40’S, 142°10’–142°25’E) in north western New South Wales was assessed using intensive quadrat sampling and mapped using extensive ground truthing and interpretation of aerial photograph and Landsat Thematic Mapper satellite images. 378 species of vascular plants were recorded from this survey from 66 families. Species recorded from previous studies but not noted in the present study have been added to give a total of 424 vascular plant species for the Park including 55 (13%) exotic species. Twenty vegetation communities were identified and mapped, the most widespread being Acacia aneura tall shrubland/tall open-shrubland, Eremophila/Dodonaea/Acacia open shrubland and Maireana pyramidata low open shrubland. One hundred and fifty years of pastoral use has impacted on many of these communities. Cunninghamia (2003) 8(1): 111–128 Introduction Elder and Waite held the Momba pastoral lease from early 1870 (Heathcote 1965). In 1889 it was reported that Momba Peery Lake area of Paroo–Darling National Park (32°18’– was overrun by kangaroos (Heathcote 1965). Elizabeth River Conservation status Australia: Critically Endangered Northern Territory: Not listed Photo: I Cowie Description reduced wing on the samara, the simple, linear leaves and the suffruticose growth habit Suffuticose subshrub, aerial parts annual, to (Cowie & Stuckey 2012; Reynolds 1981, 45 cm tall, stems slender, to 21 cm, rootstock 1985). All other NT species are trees, usually perennial, woody, 8–15 mm diam. Branchlets with compound leaves and have a prominent with short, mid-dense, straw coloured hairs wing on the fruit. A. variifolia sometimes 0.1–0.3 mm long. Leaves simple, sessile, produces simple leaves below the alternate, linear, 65–410 mm long, 1.4–7.5 inflorescence or on the juvenile regeneration mm wide, concolorous. Inflorescence but both the leaves and stems are more paniculate or sometimes corymbose, axillary, robust than in A. brevialata and the juvenile supra axillary or terminal, to 70 mm long. Fruit regeneration appears to rarely produce divaricately 3-lobed, separating into flowers and fruit. indehiscent, 1-seeded, dorsally-winged samaras.
