© Brittany Music Workshops 2014

AIMS OF THE CHORAL WEEK

to study and perform choral works by Jean Langlais, his contemporaries, those who influenced him and those he has influenced, together with great music of the Anglican tradition

to bring experienced singers together in the Breton village where Langlais was born

to work intensively with living composers who are professionals of the highest calibre

to perform in three events during the Langlais International Festival 2014

For the past six years we have run a successful and unique choral week under the expert leadership of Malcolm Archer, and we shall be repeating it in 2014. We are now seeking to recruit experienced singers who can expect to make good music in convivial surroundings and, in the process, become le Chœur de l’Académie du Festival Jean Langlais .

MUSIC FOR THE 2014 CHORAL WEEK

We will be focusing on the following works (subject to amendment):

Jean Langlais Lauda Jerusalem A la Claire Fontaine Maurice Duruflé Requiem

Hubert Parry Blest pair of sirens Herbert Howells I love all beauteous things G.F. Handel Worthy is the Lamb and Amen Chorus Malcolm Archer Ave Maria David Bednall Sherborne Mass

A basic level of sight-singing ability will be essential, and singers should try to learn the music before the course begins. Copies of scores will be sent a month in advance.

CHORAL WEEK FEES

The cost of the Choral Week is £250 per person .

This will include your individual singing lesson with Hilary Jones, all the music scores, refreshments during the coffee and tea breaks and an evening meal on the first day.

The fee also covers: • fees and expenses for Malcolm, David and Hilary • payment to the SACEM (French performing rights) • hire of venues • general administrative costs

Please be aware that you must make your own arrangements for travel and accommodation.

Information about travel (e.g. flights, ferries and routes) and accommodation (e.g. hotels, B&B, gîtes, youth hostels and campsites) can be found below. Please contact us if you wish to arrange a car share.

STRUCTURE OF THE WEEK

There will normally be two rehearsal periods each day at 3 Rue du Moulin, la Fontenelle. We have been invited to sing Sunday morning mass at the church of la Fontenelle, and we shall perform in two concerts : at the Basilique de Pontmain and at la Fontenelle.

Vocal coach Hilary Jones will be giving whole choir warm-up sessions each day and she will “voice” the choir. Each participant is also entitled to a 20 minute individual lesson with Hilary (included in the Choral Week fee) and singers may book additional half-hour (£20/20€) or hour-long (£40/40€) sessions with her during the week.

There will also be a series of lectures which take place each day just before lunch. Last year’s topics ranged from “How to develop and maintain good vocal technique” to “Langlais’ musical education”, “Wagner, the Sorcerer of Bayreuth” and “Scurrilous tales from the organ loft”.

WHERE TO EAT DURING THE CHORAL WEEK

There is a good restaurant in the village. A free evening meal will be provided at 3 Rue du Moulin on the first evening and we can arrange to book lunch and evening meals on the other days at a cost per meal of between €9.00 and €13.00 per head, to include wine/cider and coffee.

TRAVEL

There are a number of different options for travelling to la Fontenelle. If you do come by public transport, please note that there is NO public transport to la Fontenelle itself - the only options are to hire a car or to book a taxi.

Please bear in mind that you will need transport whilst attending the choral week to travel from your accommodation to the various rehearsal and concert venues.

Fares are normally announced up to three months in advance, so to take advantage of best prices for tickets (and to have a chance of a sharing arrangement for car hire), it is suggested that anyone interested should identify their interest before 30th April, 2014 and plan to make a firm commitment within the following month as travel details become available.

By CAR There a number of ferry options as well as the Eurotunnel. The table below lists the possible routes and distances to la Fontenelle.
