Perth Music Interviews Ben Stewart (Filmmaker) Amber Flynn (Rabbit Island) Sean O’Neill (Hang on Saint Christopher) Bill Darby David Craddock (Davey Craddock and the Spectacles) Scott Tomlinson (Kill Teen Angst) Thomas Mathieson (Mathas) Joe Bludge (The Painkillers) Tracey Read (The Wine Dark Sea) Rob Schifferli (The Leap Year) Chris Cobilis Andy Blaikie by Benedict Moleta December 2011 This collection of interviews was put together over the course of 2011. Some of these people have been involved in music for ten years or more, others not so long. The idea was to discuss background and development, as well as current and long-term musical projects. Benedict Moleta [email protected] Ben Stewart (Filmmaker) Were you born in Perth ? Yeah, I was born in Mt Lawley. You've been working on a music documentary for a while now, what's it about ? I started shooting footage mid 2008. I'm making a feature documentary about a bunch of bands over a period of time, it's an unscientific longitudinal study of sorts. It's a long process because I want to make an observational documentary with the narrative structure of a fiction film. I'm trying to capture a coming of age cliché but character arcs take a lot longer in real life. I remember reading once that rites of passage are good things to structure narratives around, so that's what I'm going to do, who am I to argue with a text book? Fair call. I guess one of the characteristics of bands developing or "coming of age" is that things can emerge, change, pass away and be reconfigured quickly.

There are few artists who have helped define the possibilities of living just outside of the mainstream like Tame Impala. They have evolved from pysch-rock critic darlings to music behemoths headlining Coachella and selling out arena tours. Their 2015 LP Currents put the band and Kevin Parker, the creative genius behind the record, into another stratosphere. After three albums in six years, Tame Impala went eerily silent just as the world needed more from them. That is in part because of how much touring they were able to do, but also Parker started to work on other projects for other artists, like his collaborations with Mark Ronson as he stepped out into the greater pop world. Rihanna covered their song “Same Old Mistakes” for her 2016 LP Anti . Other members went on to push their own bands, like Pond, which has seen a huge surge in popularity in the later half of the 2010’s.

The Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training Foreign Affairs Oral History Project F. ALLEN (TEX) HARRIS Interviewed by: Charles Stuart Kennedy Initial interview date: December 10, 1999 Copyright 2020 ADST INTERVIEW Q: This is an interview with F. Allen Harris, known by all as Tex Harris, and the interview is being done on behalf of the Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training, and I’m Charles Stuart Kennedy. Tex, let’s start off with when and where were you born, and tell me something about your family. HARRIS: I was born in Glendale, California, on May 13, 1938. I am sixty-one years of age as we are recording this today and have retired from the Foreign Service eight weeks ago. I am pleased to note for the record that I was conceived in the great state of Texas, where my father was in the oil business in a place called Aransas Pass, which is just outside of Corpus Christi, and those were solid days. He was doing rather well, and he had a number of racehorses, and he took them to California for the racing season with my lovely, pregnant mother, Helen. My dad’s name was Murray. By the way, my first name is Franklyn with a “y,” not an “I” because that was the Democratic spelling and the “y” was a family name, more of a Republican spelling. I was born in California by an accident and did not spend any time [there]. I grew up most of my life in Dallas, Texas, where I went to public schools and became very much involved in basketball.
