PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2018 RHONA ALSTON

Welcome to Tennis Tayside’s Annual Report for 2018. The Summer of 2018 will long be remembered for the glorious weather conditions which helped us all complete our matches mostly in dry weather. As you will read, it has been another busy and exciting year for tennis in Tayside. We are delighted that throughout our region we continue to have many teams enjoying competing with each other both at our indoors and outdoors facilities. The role of the Tennis Tayside Board is to manage these sporting events. Currently, there are five divisions of Ladies 6 player leagues, six divisions of Men’s 6 player leagues, five divisions of Henderson Vase leagues, three divisions of Men’s single leagues and one division of Ladies 4 player leagues. The juniors over the region have a Super- league and four other divisions. To attend all these events takes much dedication from the players and support staff and we are fortunate throughout the region that the sport continues to be attractive over all age groups. Later in this annual report you will observe the League Secretaries report’s and can view all the completed fixtures. Throughout 2018 we agreed to trial a four-set format across our 6 player leagues. We are interested to gain feedback on the likes and dislikes of this format, which were informally aired over many a hearty supper. Consequently, Robin Nisbett volunteered to conduct a player survey of all the players that had participated to enquire as to their preference between a four set and a six-set match. We excitingly await the outcome of the survey to inform the Board’s decision going forward in 2019. Sponsorship is essential for financially balancing our tournaments expenditure and we are always extremely grateful to the local businesses that generously contribute to our cause. Over 2018 we were fortunate to acquire new sponsors Keillor Graphics in Arbroath, who supported the leagues this season, and Moir’s Construction in Arbroath who sponsored the St Andrews Open. Our additional sponsors who we are indebted to include are Gary Miller from Millers of Carnoustie and Montrose for sponsoring the Tennis Tayside Junior Competition at Broughty Ferry and to Mr & Mrs D Cree at D C Lighting Services who for the fifth year continued to sponsor the North Angus Tournament. Thank you all. Montrose Tennis Club ran the extra mile, literally, this year to raise funds for both the club and to support the local charity Tayside Children with Cancer and Leukaemia (TCCL). The charity has offered direct support to three children in Montrose over 2018, one of which is three year old Gillon Hay, a member of Montrose Tennis Club and my grandson. In addition, the charity continues to support many more families over the region of Tayside and beyond who are affected by childhood cancer. The picture on the front cover of this report is of the wonderful team who completed a 24-hour endurance run in Edinburgh. The funds they presented to TCCL totalled an impressive £2500 and again this is down to the incredible support of the local people who continue to support our clubs and their missions. In addition, I too was diagnosed with breast cancer four weeks into the start of the leagues. My treatment is now complete and I am pleased to return to all my duties and the enjoyment of playing tennis. Thank you to Ann Hill for sharing the duties involved with this post over the summer. This year Tennis Scotland has announced that Maggies will be the Tennis Scotland Charity Partnership in memory of coach Annette Fox. The photo below is the ladies from Lundin Sports Club hosting a fundraising Tennis Tournament and lunch for Maggies’ Fife with Tennis Scotland.

The day involved “Whistle Stop” Doubles Competition organised by Skip Martinez who kindly gave up his day to organize a group of 24 keen competitive Ladies form Fife and Tayside. Couples were drawn out of a hat. We hope to do again 2019. £833 was raised Well done all. by Liz Rolland Lundin Sports 7.9.2018

The Opening of St Andrews University indoor courts, pictures of which follow inside the report by Mike Kolacz our Tayside Regional Development Officer. Thank you to Mike Aitken for allowing us a Winter League Division to be played there and for Steven Birrell running mini development squads in Fife there and a session of our performance will be held there soon. Board meetings have had a few guest speakers this year; Linda Gordon from Tennis Scotland about the options of running tournaments, Mark J Milne, Arbroath TC to speak on a new scoring system called Thirty30, David Anderson who is currently employed by Dundee Council on Parks Tennis and running their programmes. At our AGM we are very honoured to be welcoming our current Chief Executive of Tennis Scotland, Blane Dodds, who will excitedly inform us of the bid which Tennis Scotland won to bring one of the two National Academies to Stirling and its progress so far. Performance is of course extremely important to many players and I am pleased to attach a piece from Jonny O’Mara from Tayside pictured here at recent Davis Cup with Tayside players who were accompanied by Steven Birrell our Inter- District Captain. Excitingly for Tayside Performance hopefuls Adam Brown at Gleneagles and Mike Aitken at St Andrews were successful in gaining the status of Local Player Development Centres in 2018. All of which is progressive and fabulous news. Facilities update: Montrose updated three front courts this year and Wormit are currently replacing their courts this month. I wish Forthill great success as they commence funding applications to update their club. Forthill Community Club certainly has a buzz about it this year. Ian Conway. It was with regret that we received Ian’s resignation, he has been a stalwart to Tennis both in his Presidential years at Tayside and his many years of service to all areas of North County. He also served as Tennis Scotland President for a period. His knowledge and input at meetings are missed. Rick Gardner is also stepping down from Tayside Board as he will become the Tennis Scotland President next year. The vacancy for Vice President of Tennis Scotland is currently vacant so any candidates in the region please think about this post.

We will also be presenting a trophy to team Kinnoull who have won the Team Tennis 2018 captained by Ryan Martin. Well done Kinnoull.

Report from Jonny O’Mara – from Arbroath TC 2018 has been a pretty good year for me, with the highlight undoubtably being the two ATP 250 titles that my partner Luke Bambridge and I managed to win. As usual I enjoyed the grass season, so it was no surprise to me and Luke when we saw our best form on this surface, first winning the big challenger event in Surbiton then that amazing ATP 250 win in Eastbourne, where, amongst other top doubles teams preparing for Wimbledon, we beat the world number 3’s in the second round.

5 Wimbledon 2018 straight after, was as usual a wonderful experience even though again we had a tough draw, drawing last year’s champions in the first round, a tough loss! We continued our good form through the season with plenty more challenger finals and titles, culminating in that second ATP250 win at The Stockholm Open at the end of the season. I also really enjoyed being up in for The Davis Cup, what an atmosphere, being a small part of the team this time, has really given me a huge motivation to play in front of a Davis Cup crowd in the future. Now ranked at world number 63 in doubles I am really looking forward to 2019 and hope to have a real breakthrough year. Keep working hard on your tennis in the off season and all the best Tennis Tayside.

Report on Charlie Robertson – recipient of our Most Promising Player award.

Charlie's moved into 12U in April this year. His first main tournament was at Kilgraston after being selected to play for Tayside Tennis, he has also been selected to play for the 12U North County and was the first reserve for the 12U Scotland team. His ranking at the beginning of the year was 172 in the UK for 12U boys and his rating was an 8.2, he reached a career high of 19 after a very successful summer season of competing. He is currently sitting at No 3 in Scotland and No 23 in the UK, and his rating is a 6.2. Charlie won 7 singles titles and 5 doubles titles so far this year, playing in all different age groups and grades of tournaments. He also had a great first 12U Tennis Europe competition in Halton reaching quarters in the singles and the semis in doubles. Charlie has also been selected as one of the RPDC players under the new LTA pathway.

May I conclude with my thanks to Broughty Ferry Tennis Club for hosting our AGM and to all our venues who have hosted tournaments this year. Tayside Tennis catering is simply first class at them.

TENNIS TAYSIDE TREASURER’S REPORT 2018 - BILL DUFF Tennis Tayside has had another good year from the financial point of view. The recorded surplus was £4,090 (2017 £2904) and the balance sheet value at 30th September was £58,789 (2017 £54,799). This year we received donations of £1742, including £1642 from Midlands Tennis Grassroots scheme curtesy of Douglas Gibson. Sponsorship income was excellent at £3000. We wrote off one debt for £100 which related to an unpaid affiliation fee. The club concerned has now folded and there was no realistic opportunity that this would be paid. The other debt recorded on the Balance sheet relates to a loan made to North of Scotland County LTA. It is anticipated that this loan will be repaid once the county’s finances return to an even keel. Administration costs and league running costs increased as we reviewed the level of honoraria paid to certain office bearers and league secretaries. Once again, we absorbed the cost of entering teams into Tennis Scotland Inter- District event. Summer leagues showed a healthy surplus and exceptional event meant that this year winter leagues almost broke even compared with large season’s large deficit. We invested the income received from Midlands in securities and our portfolio worth £22,000 (at purchase cost) yielded £1027 this year, a very satisfactory figure. Tournaments showed a surplus of £300, however both events were sponsored to tune of £500 each which gave us a healthy net yield.

SECRETARY’S REPORT 2018 (JOY MAYGLOTHLING )

The main secretarial duties during this time have been connected with the administration of our board meetings, and circulating information coming into Tennis Tayside from Tennis Scotland, and the LTA.

A little extra work was required this year with regard to the introduction of GDPR legislation ensuring that the board are aware of responsibilities to keep personal data safe.

In addition, I have deal with general queries that have come into Tennis Tayside through our website with this number increasing year on year.

The summer league handbook is always a challenge as it requires a fair amount of pulling together a variety of data, from a large number of people and then getting it ready for printing against an always tight timescale. Special thanks to Ann Hill for her proof reading skills . Since our last AGM we have held 5 Board Meetings, and in addition the board has corresponded considerably by email sharing relevant information and allowing prompt decisions to be made where required.

As previously I am also happy to receive information from clubs and coaches about our member’s events which I can then forward to the rest of our members and which can also be put on the website if appropriate

Over 70% of Tayside venues were active at TDGs in 2018.

KEY PROJECTS AND HIGHLIGHTS Safeguarding Tennis Scotland has worked hard in 2018 to support all clubs in Tayside to achieve minimum standards for Safeguarding and Inclusivity, ahead of new registration criteria introduced in 2018. At time of writing 96% of are expected to meet these standards, with remaining still working hard to get over the line.

University of St Andrews Indoor Courts The University of St Andrews proudly opened its doors to 4 new Indoors Tennis Courts in 2018! The facility is open to the community and also offers a range of activity for all ages and abilities. Tennis Scotland contributed £250,000 towards the £3m project.

DUNDEE

Tennis Scotland continues to work closely with partners in Dundee to transform the city into a hub of thriving tennis activity, and realise the potential of Tayside’s largest urban area.

In 2018 we worked in partnership with the local authority and citywide clubs to launch a campaign to raise awareness of tennis in Dundee.

A new webpage was launched www.dundeetennis.com at the centre of a campaign to promote all tennis venues in the city, and new online booking for at six citywide venues.

Dundee continues to build on development in preparation for a bid to build indoor tennis courts as part of the Regional Performance Centre at Caird Park.

FINALLY

Tennis Scotland would like to formally thank Tennis Tayside for continued commitment to grow the game across the district. It is pleasure to work with in partnership with such a hard-working committee

SCOTTISH JUNIOR INTER DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS 2018 4-7TH APRIL

Scottish Junior Inter District Championships 2018 4-7th April This year’s Scottish Inter District Championship was played again at Kilgraston School in Perthshire, with 8 districts competing over 4 days – day one with lots of snow then 3 days of blue skies and sunshine, in 3 age groups – 12U, 15U and 18U. Tayside fielded a very strong team throughout the age groups, probably the strongest on paper, supporting each other on and off the court and creating a very fun atmosphere within the team, bringing the best out of all the players.

Tayside team: Team Captain: Steven Birrell/Douglas Gibson

12U 15U 18U Alexander English Ruari McLennan Lewis Hall Charlie Robertson Christopher Horgan Scott Hamilton Riley Thomson Katie McKay Kirsty Robertson Annie Webster Katie Bradley Alexa Manganiel

In the 18U event, Tayside beat Highlands 5-1 then beat East 6-0 in the semi both quite comfortable. They played West in the final. After going 3-1 up in the tie, Lewis had a bit of an injured shoulder and lost to the West number 1. Kirsty had 2 match points in the 3rd set against Eilidh to win the 18U title and after a great forehand that ended up getting called out, Eilidh played a very good 2 points at 9-9 to level the tie at 3-3 and force a shootout.

West ended up winning the shootout 10-6 to win the tie with our 18U team finishing 2nd overall. In the 15U event, Tayside beat the North East 5-1 to play West in the semi. The boys played very solid in the singles and doubles taking all 3. Katie McKay had a tough single match against a very strong West number. Katie Bradley had a very close singles against the number 2 losing 10-7 in the 3rd set tie break. The girl’s doubles also ended up being very close again losing 10-7 in the 3rd set tie break forcing a shootout which West won to send our team into the 3rd/4th play off. A win in any of the 3 tie breaks would have earned a place in the final but not to be. In the 3rd forth play off a similar story against. The girls lost a very close 3rd set doubles match 10-6 in the tie break. Katie McKay had a very good win against the number 1 East girl again forcing a shootout which East won resulting in a 4th position for the 15U team. Very unlucky this year not to finish higher.

The 12U team had a very strong start against Highlands, winning 6-0 and dropping only 4 games total over the 6 matches played.

In the semi they played Central who had a very strong girls’ side but weaker boys’ side. The boys won their matches very easily to go 3-0 up. The girls needed just one win to get to the final. Riley ended up having match points against their number 1 girl but ended up losing 12-10 in the 3rd set. They also lost the doubles 10-8 in the 3rd set again forcing a shoot out to get to the final. Central played a very strong shoot out winning it 10-3 meaning the 12U team were playing for 3/4th place on the last day against East. They won this pretty easily 4-0, not dropping any sets and not having to play the doubles. Central then went on to win the final easily against West so a shame not to get through as they would have had a very good chance of winning the final.

Tough year with lots of very close matches and shoot outs and very unlucky not to win the overall title with just a few points across the 3 age groups that could have won all 3 age group titles. A lot of the players can still play next year so looking like another strong team for 2019.

Overall standings: 1st West of Scotland and Central (joint) 5th North East of Scotland 3rd Tayside 6th Borders 4th East of Scotland 7th Ayrshire 8th High

PLAYER PATHWAY – DOUGLAS GIBSON

This winter sees the third year we have provided a very wide based coaching/training opportunity for sixty plus youngsters indoors, now at three venues, David Lloyd, Gleneagles Hotel and next month, our first sessions at the new St. Andrews University courts. Indeed, if we can arrange something similar for red and orange kids the numbers offered places and participating should substantially rise. Last winter, after the AGM, we held the usual number of sessions which were well received and you will see elsewhere in the Annual Report that we acquitted ourselves so well at the Inter District championships that but for one particularly bad line call at a crucial state in the final stages and a few tie breaks that just went the wrong way, we might have made history. We are fortunate to have many talented juniors in our District including a few at Scottish and British level.

The first of this winter’s sessions has already taken place at David Lloyds courts near Monifeith. We aim to hold sessions very roughly once a month but find that scheduling such sessions is becoming progressively more difficult. This is because one needs the coach, venue and children to be available at the same time. Finding days when the top competing youngsters and an indoor venue are available is tricky although, on the positive side, the plethora of competitions throughout Scotland does then make places available for up and coming kids to make a claim for a more permanent place on our list of potential attendees. We try to set the fee at cost and generally come close to achieving our target. We do however have a budget from the Board to cover contingencies.

Finally, I would like to offer my thanks to Steve Birrell, our Inter District Coach. Not only is he an excellent coach, easy to work with and popular with the participants but no one sees the hours that he has to put in to scan the tournament schedules for appropriate dates, then putting together balanced sessions and finding more kids to invite when the inevitable withdrawals come through injury or other commitments. Douglas Gibson Board Member and LTA level four coach. TENNIS TAYSIDE TOURNAMENTS REPORT 2018 (Rick Gardner)

The main Tennis Tayside Open Grade 3 tournament was held again in May over two long weekends, 4th to 6th plus 11th to 13th May. St Andrews LTC were again the hosts of the main site and we utilised all of their 7 courts, plus on one day, their 3 dedicated Mini Red courts. We thank the President and club for allowing us to continue the utilisation of their facilities and clubhouse and also many thanks to their volunteers who fed & watered all players, parents and spectators. The University of St Andrews Sports Centre kindly allowed us to use their 4 outside courts again as our second site and thanks go to them and especially Mike Aitken for his assistance in the arrangement.

This year was excellent in terms of the number of players and in total we had 307 entries and 340 matches, a great result, so thanks to all who helped in competing, advertising and supporting this annual tournament. This year our previous sponsor Shepherd had to withdraw, but our Tennis Tayside President managed to find a very worthy new sponsor in Moir Construction. Very many thanks to our former and current sponsors, without whose assistance we could not manage the finances.

Thanks, must go to our officials who worked tirelessly over the two weekends – Assistant Referees Linda Gordon and Gary Whitton, plus Court Supervisors Chris Maclaughlin and Claire Kinloch-Anderson.

Following the very successful Tennis Tayside Tournament in May, the Tennis Tayside Junior Grade 4 tournament was held again at Broughty Ferry TC over the weekend of 8th & 9th September. By careful planning and using a short set format this year, the Friday evening was released to the club for members play. Thanks go to the club for allowing the use of all six courts and appreciation goes to the volunteers for arranging the food and refreshments. Sponsor was Millers of Montrose and we thank them also.

Referee for this year was Gary Whitton, so thanks go to him. This year we had nearly 100 entries and 147 matches, partly due to adding an 8&U mixed event which was held at Dawson Park. David Anderson was the assistant referee there, who then helped Gary at Broughty Ferry. Thanks go to David and to Dundee Council for allowing the use of those courts.

For both tournaments, the Glass awards were supplied by The Master Cobbler, and tennis balls from Richmond Sports, both from St Andrews. Appreciation goes to both companies for their assistance.

Finally, for 2019 we expect the Grade 3 Open tournament to be in May and the Grade 4 Junior tournament in September, so please look out for them.

Report: This year we had some close-run winners and runners up - Divs 4 and 5 – and in Divs 2 and 3 the teams being demoted - only being divided by the percentage of sets won over sets played. As is usual for the Ladies League the results were all submitted timeously and generally were legible although the first three weeks produced some interesting interpretations of the new scoring set up!

Report: For the first time for years there was a drop in the overall number of Adult teams entering the Winter Leagues with only 4 teams in Div C at DL and one Div playing out of Gleneagles. More disappointing was the number of teams who did not return a score – even though the match had been played – with the Juniors being the worst offenders. Hopefully 2018-19 will be better.

HENDERSON VASE REPORT

Division 1: Forthill 1 are the Division 1 and Tayside champions, with Kinnoull 1 second, one point behind. Blairgowrie, St Andrews 1 and WANT 1 go down. (In all divisions the relegations and promotions assume the entries and division set-up are the same next year.)

Division 2: Broughty Ferry 1 champions, with Perth 1 and Scone 2 also going up. Kinross, Montrose 3 and Arbroath 2 go down.

Division 3: Tayport champions, with David Lloyd 1 and Anstruther also going up. Duffus, St Andrews 2 and Broughty Ferry 2 go down.

Division 4: Lundin Sports 1 champions, with WANT 2 and Perth 2 also going up. Scone 3, Lundin Sports 2 and Montrose 4 go down.

Division 5: David Lloyd 2 champions (75.6% of sets won, the best percentage in the divisions) and West End 2 (72.2% of sets) and Broughty Ferry 3 also go up.

A few other facts, figures and observations: • No side had a perfect record, but Forthill 1, Broughty Ferry 1, Tayport, David Lloyd 2 and West End 2 were all 6-1. • Both David Lloyd teams go up, with the new second team winning Division 5. • We had seven forfeits, an increase over the five of last year. St Andrews expressed its intention to withdraw from Division 1 midway through the league and conceded two ties. However they were advised their second and third team wins would not count unless the first team played, and fulfilled their fixtures (winning one of them) for the remainder of the season. • Two ties were not finished on the night because of shortcomings in sportsmanship and adult conduct. Disputes over these ties required involvement of the league secretaries and even board members in one case. I would urge clubs to ask their players to adhere to more reasonable standards of conduct and sporting behaviour next year.

NOTE: If more/less teams enter next year then the promotions shown may vary.

This year Tennis Tayside took the decision to welcome Stonehaven permanently to the league. They are a welcome competitive addition to the leagues and a very active club. Coach Bruce McIvor and all at Stonehaven LTC wished to thank the Tayside clubs for allowing them to enter into the leagues.

Unfortunately, Arbroath 1 withdrew after the season started from the Superleague, and Scone could not manage to get a team together in Division 2. Arbroath 2 matches were left scheduled as friendlies in Division 1. Tennis Tayside would ask clubs to strongly consider their team composition and communicate with players and parents early to avoid situations like this happening again.

BEST PERFORMING JUNIOR

MOST PROMISING JUNIOR Congratulations to Charlie Robertson.

Charlie's moved into 12U in April this year. His first main tournament was at Kilgraston after being selected to play for Tayside Tennis, he has also be selected to play for the 12U North County and was the first reserve for the 12U Scotland team. His ranking at the beginning of the year was 172 in the UK for 12U boys and his rating was an 8.2, he reached a career high of 19 after a very successful summer season of competing. He is currently sitting at No3 in Scotland and No23 in the UK, and his rating is a 6.2. Charlie won 7 singles titles and 5 doubles titles so far this year, playing in all different age groups and grades of tournaments. He also had a great first 12U Tennis Europe competition in Halton reaching quarters in the singles and the semis in doubles. We would welcome new teams to the league next year and it would be great to see this format grow to 4 divisions. It is fantastic to see so many adults enjoying playing some competitive singles.

If any smaller clubs wish to join forces in order to get a team together next season this would be welcomed by the League Sec. We want to see as many playing as possible.

Just as relevant in a fun game with friends as it is in a Grand Slam or major tennis tournament, Fair Play includes:

• Good sportsmanship, honesty and respect whether you win or lose • Learning to challenge yourself and improve social skills • Taking responsibility for your actions, calling scores and lines clearly and fairly even if it costs you the point • Learning and following the rules and being a role model to younger people • Enjoyment of the sport
