  • The Birds of Herefordshire 2015
The Birds of Herefordshire 2015 Herefordshire Ornithological Club Annual Report Jackdaws and Hereford cattle at Much Marcle in March 2015 (Photo: Mick Colquhoun) Editorial This is the 65th annual report of the ‘Birds of Herefordshire’, the Herefordshire Ornithological Club’s (HOC) annual publication for 2015, which I hope you will enjoy reading. During the year a total of 172 species were recorded, summary details and highlights of which are presented in the systematic list section on pages 30 – 98, for which I wish to thank the species authors. An alphabetic index of species is included on pages 146 – 147 to help readers locate individual species information and a gazetteer of place names mentioned in the species accounts is provided on pages 142 – 145. The county list of species (now numbering 281) was boosted by the sighting of a Spotted Sandpiper, a county ‘first’, at Wellington Gravel Pits in May 2015 (see article on pages 28 – 29), and seven other rarities with 20 or fewer previous county records also made an appearance in Herefordshire during the year: Red-crested Pochard, Marsh Harrier, Turnstone, Temminck’s Stint, Red-necked Phalarope, Caspian Gull and Common Redpoll. A tremendous amount of effort has gone into validating the records of rarities on the county list during the past year and the review article on pages 12 – 18 makes enlightening reading and provides a definitive list and dates of sightings for all 94 rarity species with 20 or fewer records. The large increase in the number of bird records received in 2014, compared with previous years, continued in 2015 with a similar 46,000 records being utilised in compiling this annual report.

  • THE SKYDMORES/ SCUDAMORES of ROWLESTONE, HEREFORDSHIRE, Including Their Descendants at KENTCHURCH, LLANCILLO, MAGOR & EWYAS HAROLD
Rowlestone and Kentchurch Skidmore/ Scudamore One-Name Study THE SKYDMORES/ SCUDAMORES OF ROWLESTONE, HEREFORDSHIRE, including their descendants at KENTCHURCH, LLANCILLO, MAGOR & EWYAS HAROLD. edited by Linda Moffatt 2016© from the original work of Warren Skidmore CITATION Please respect the author's contribution and state where you found this information if you quote it. Suggested citation The Skydmores/ Scudamores of Rowlestone, Herefordshire, including their Descendants at Kentchurch, Llancillo, Magor & Ewyas Harold, ed. Linda Moffatt 2016, at the website of the Skidmore/ Scudamore One-Name Study www.skidmorefamilyhistory.com'. DATES • Prior to 1752 the year began on 25 March (Lady Day). In order to avoid confusion, a date which in the modern calendar would be written 2 February 1714 is written 2 February 1713/4 - i.e. the baptism, marriage or burial occurred in the 3 months (January, February and the first 3 weeks of March) of 1713 which 'rolled over' into what in a modern calendar would be 1714. • Civil registration was introduced in England and Wales in 1837 and records were archived quarterly; hence, for example, 'born in 1840Q1' the author here uses to mean that the birth took place in January, February or March of 1840. Where only a baptism date is given for an individual born after 1837, assume the birth was registered in the same quarter. BIRTHS, MARRIAGES AND DEATHS Databases of all known Skidmore and Scudamore bmds can be found at www.skidmorefamilyhistory.com PROBATE A list of all known Skidmore and Scudamore wills - many with full transcription or an abstract of its contents - can be found at www.skidmorefamilyhistory.com in the file Skidmore/Scudamore One-Name Study Probate.

  • A Welsh Classical Dictionary
A WELSH CLASSICAL DICTIONARY DACHUN, saint of Bodmin. See s.n. Credan. He has been wrongly identified with an Irish saint Dagan in LBS II.281, 285. G.H.Doble seems to have been misled in the same way (The Saints of Cornwall, IV. 156). DAGAN or DANOG, abbot of Llancarfan. He appears as Danoc in one of the ‘Llancarfan Charters’ appended to the Life of St.Cadog (§62 in VSB p.130). Here he is a clerical witness with Sulien (presumably abbot) and king Morgan [ab Athrwys]. He appears as abbot of Llancarfan in five charters in the Book of Llandaf, where he is called Danoc abbas Carbani Uallis (BLD 179c), and Dagan(us) abbas Carbani Uallis (BLD 158, 175, 186b, 195). In these five charters he is contemporary with bishop Berthwyn and Ithel ap Morgan, king of Glywysing. He succeeded Sulien as abbot and was succeeded by Paul. See Trans.Cym., 1948 pp.291-2, (but ignore the dates), and compare Wendy Davies, LlCh p.55 where Danog and Dagan are distinguished. Wendy Davies dates the BLD charters c.A.D.722 to 740 (ibid., pp.102 - 114). DALLDAF ail CUNIN COF. (Legendary). He is included in the tale of ‘Culhwch and Olwen’ as one of the warriors of Arthur's Court: Dalldaf eil Kimin Cof (WM 460, RM 106). In a triad (TYP no.73) he is called Dalldaf eil Cunyn Cof, one of the ‘Three Peers’ of Arthur's Court. In another triad (TYP no.41) we are told that Fferlas (Grey Fetlock), the horse of Dalldaf eil Cunin Cof, was one of the ‘Three Lovers' Horses’ (or perhaps ‘Beloved Horses’).

Friends of St Michael & All Angels Church Moccas Herefordshire HR2 9LH Welcome to our first Newsletter Autumn 2018 Flower Festival in a Tea Cup Saturday 29th & Sunday 30th September 10am to 4pm Celebration Service 3pm Sunday Refreshments in Village Hall Organ Restoration Project The organ at the west end of our church was designed and constructed by RW Walker & Sons Ltd in 1871, and installed by the Rector, Reverend Sir George Cornewall of Moccas Court. The red and green casing was hand painted by Kempe and considered to be quite unique. The historian, David Whitehead has described it as a “… wonderful composition, unparalleled anywhere else in Herefordshire”. At nearly 150 years old, it is not surprisingly in need of some refurbishment – both the organ and its casing, separately – and fund raising is well underway for this project. Quotes received are in the region of £60-70k for the organ and £20k for the casing; so far we have raised a total of £40k, with £5k from Church Care, £5k from the Prince of Wales Charitable Foundation, £10k and £15k respectively from two private donors, and £5k from a series of fundraising events. Meet our new vicar, the Revd Luci Morriss Appointed as a Rural Pioneer Priest in the Deanery of Abbeydore and Priest in Charge of the Border Link Parishes: Cusop with Blakemere, Bredwardine with Brobury, Clifford, Dorstone, Hardwicke, Moccas and Preston-on-Wye Luci joins us from Oxford Diocese with her husband, Alistair, and we welcome them both Sunday 7th October: 11.00am Harvest Festival with the Hereford Church Singers & Lunch in Village Hall Sunday 9th December: 7.00pm Nine Lessons & Carols with Hereford Cathedral School Senior Chamber Choir (as part of their Music in Quiet Places season) Monday 24th December: 8.00pm Christmas Eve Holy Communion On 30th September 5 Rural Pioneer Priests will be licensed in our Deanery.

  • BT Payphones
Anthony Bush Parish Liaison and Rural Services Officer County Of Herefordshire County Offices Plough Lane Hereford HR4 0LE 26th September 2016 TIME SENSITIVE - 90 Day Consultation period end date: 28th December 2016 Dear Mr. Bush Further to our previous letter, we are writing to you as part of a formal consultation process regarding our current programme of intended public payphone removals. This letter formally starts our consultation with you and the local community. There are currently 132 public payphones in your area which have been identified and proposed for removal by BT under the 90-day consultation process and details of these payphones are shown below. To ensure that the local community are fully informed, we have placed consultation notices on the relevant payphones, and a sample notice is enclosed. We have also included the date we posted these notices on the payphones. The consultation period will close on 28th December 2016. Unless you contact us to agree otherwise, responses received after this date will not be accepted. This consultation process gives your local communities the opportunity to adopt a traditional red ‘heritage’ phone box and make them an asset that local people can enjoy. It’s really simple to do and it costs just £1 - http://business.bt.com/phone-services/payphone-services/adopt-a-kiosk/ Overall use of payphones has declined by over 90 per cent in the last decade and the need to provide payphones for use in emergency situations is diminishing all the time, with at least 98 per cent of the UK having either 3G or 4G coverage.
