8 APRIL 2013 VOLUME 4 ISSUE 12 Show & Tell In March we saw 15 quilts – and once again, what a variety of talents. Several of the quilts shown this month were made for special people and would be given away as soon as they were shown. So much love is in those stitches. Each quilt will be a treasured reminder of that love as it is received and used.

Once again we are looking for people over 5’5” to hold the quilts for Show & Tell. If you are interested, please stop by the Show and Tell table to volunteer.

While she was working on the quilt, a visiting granddaughter expressed how much she liked it. Jeanne tucked it away and recently hung it with determination to complete it. Here’s a brief profile:

Music is the which has run through Jo Hutcheson’s life. She began working with choirs, then majored in Music at UCLA, taught choral music at Lawndale high school, gave private lessons, and played for weddings and other events. Jo says “Playing the piano has been a wonderful outlet; it beats seeing a psychiatrist!”

Jo’s interest in quilting has been life-long. When she moved back to Orange County from Solana Beach, she took a quilting class at Saddleback from Sandy Leach, and this is where she began making new friends, two of whom are Guild members: Eike Anderson and Claudia Redfern. Doll quilts, wall hangings and clothing using quilting techniques are her favorite projects.

Not surprisingly, her biggest joy in life is her family and friends. She has two children, five grandchildren and two sisters, and she looks forward to spending time with them all.

Jo devotes much of her time to service work. Since Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans (her birthplace), she has spent time rebuilding homes and futures. She also travels frequently to Mexico to build a “house-in-a-day” for the needy. If she can ever downsize her calendar, she’d like to work with our Wounded Warriors group. Her mantra is: “Have a good time while doing good.”

On behalf of our entire Guild, we say “Thank you, Jo, for entertaining us.”

15 APRIL 2013 VOLUME 4 ISSUE 12 April Block of the Month Spring is time to collect goodies in a jar for our Piecemaker. Surround the jar with your stash. The instructions are included on the next page.

Are you having trouble getting started? Judy Nunn and Kerry Joho finally decided to start in February with a sewing sleep-over. They began sewing at 10 am and worked until 11 pm. Judy slept over and the next day they sewed for another three hours. They completed eight or nine blocks each and are well on their way to completing the 12 months of blocks.

You may win $100 in the “Lucky Member with a Completed Top” raffle, and/ or win the $100 “Viewers Choice” award at our July BOM show. Those with a completed quilt may win both and come away with $200. You may change the size of your blocks and vary the blocks, but you must include all 12 months. Please email or call if you have any questions.

All the patterns and tutorials are on our website under Block of the Month; this season of 12 begins with the Piecemaker Lady, June 2012. http://www.surfsidequiltersguild.org/BlockoftheMonth/2012.aspx

The season continues into 2013. The twelfth block will be May 2013. http://www.surfsidequiltersguild.org/BlockoftheMonth/2013.aspx
