1. Introduction

Gaurisankhar Rural Municipality ranges from the altitude of 930 to 7132 meter covers the former VDCs , Jhyaku, Suri, , , Khare and Gaurisankhar. Administratively it is divided into 9 wards. Mount Gaurishankar is located in the Gaurishankar Rural Municipality -9 (former Gaurishankar VDC). The Tso Rolpa Glacial Lake is also located at Ward-9 of GRM. Rolwaling River is the major river in Gaurishankar Rural Municipality. Babiyodanda Manthali settlement, the training site is located at Gaurisankhar RM-8 which is located at North-East of Charikot Bazzar. It is almost 46 Km far from Charikot Bazzar traversing through Charikot- Road. The area is located at coordinate 27o48'19"N, 86o13'24"E. The targeted site is one of the rural areas of where firewood is the primary source of energy for cooking and heating because of poverty and the lack of alternative sources of energy. Most people still rely on traditional cooking stoves which are inefficient and produce large volumes of smoke which remain inside dwellings due to lack of proper ventilation. The impact of the installation training program are reduction of fuel wood consumption, decreasing drudgery in kitchen, saving time and effort to collect firewood from nearby forest, decreasing carbon emission, improve health condition of people involved in cooking and protect environment from harmful emission. Training was targeted to the village where no other organization had interfered for the similar type of trainings. After the recommendation and demand from Ward Office, DLPIU (GMaLI), Dolakha intervene unto for the 5 days training. Our training was concentrated to that site where people are depended on the nearby forest for their firewood and depended on traditional smoky cooking stove. For this training nine participants were selected from different settlements of Khare. Those participants were trained by our hired Trainer for Five days. In that training days they learned to construct the ICS using local materials and installed to ward recommended earthquake beneficiaries households.

2. Objective of training

The general objective of the training was to provide the practical knowledge on ICS construction/installation, encourage community participation of Gaurisankhar RM-8, Babiyodanda Manthali Settlement in ICS installation and improvement in human health and reduce environmental impacts through mitigating air pollution and reducing forest degradation. The specific objectives were: a) To provide the practical skills and hands-on training on ICS construction. b) To build human capacity for ICS construction in various part of Dolakha District c) To install the ICS in ward recommended household by the Master trainer. d) To improve the livelihoods of local people through better health and reducing the time needed for fuel wood collection time, towards other productive activities; e) To convey message regarding ICS health benefits, fuel savings, time saving, drudgery reduction and environmental benefits within the community;

3

f) To reduce the emission of air pollutants through reduced use of biomass for cooking and heating

3. Relevancy of training identification/selection:

With the help of NRA-DLPIU- Dolakha, earthquake affected beneficiaries were able to construct their new own house. But kitchen within their 2 roomed-house had created the indoor air pollution with the use of traditional stove. This had also increased the maximum use of Forest Firewood. In order to reduce the indoor air pollution and consumption of forest product(firewood), Improved Cooking Stoves with high efficiency is utmost necessary. Under the provision of Environment and Social Framework, the ICS was installed to the targeted beneficiaries after the trainee were trained for five days, listed though the consultation and recommendation from local authorities.

4. Criteria for participation identification/selection:

Participants were selected by the ward office from one settlement each. The trained Mason was given more priority, if available. Mostly unemployed individual were selected as a participants. Ward office selected and recommended the poor, single women, senior citizen house for the installation of improved cooking stove.

5. Training methodology

Training was conducted more practically rather than theoretically. Over all, training period was five (5) days where for each day first short session was covered by some theory regarding the science behind ICS then after, for whole day trainee constructed the Improved Cooking Stove. In this regard, trainees as per trainer instruction constructed the ICS and dismantle same constructed ICS and rebuild it again and again. Similar process went until trainees were confident to construct well furnish ICS without the help of trainer. After they were trained those individual installed the ICS in those beneficiaries' houses which had listed by Ward Office.

6. Lesson learned and area of improvement

a. Five days training was insufficient to trained the trainee and installed ICS in targeted beneficiaries household b. There should be separate ICS training program and ICS installation program c. Rather than organizing training event in ward level, it would be better to organize at Gaunpalika level with selecting the one trainee from one ward. d. Appropriate time of ICS training is from Falgun to Baisakh when the people are not busy in agriculture activities

7. Summary of participants view on training program

Participants were highly motivated with this Improved Cooking Stove Training at their own settlement. They found this training very fruitful on three aspects, i.e. Reducing Forest Pressure, Health and Income generation. This ICS Training is the training which adapts the symbiosis of locally available resources and tools with modern technology which helped to capacitate the participants for their income generation. After the completion of installation of ICS in respective beneficiaries and showing the demo cooking , other member in the community were also motivated to install in their house too. Only concern form the participants were, they found training period very short because, within five days they are supposed to be fully trained and installed the Improved Cooking Stove in targeted beneficiaries Houses

8. Conclusion

With the motto of safeguarding social and environment aspects, after the post housing reconstruction, this training was conducted. In order to reduce the forest firewood pressure, to improve the health of women from indoor air pollution and to capacitate participants for income generation activities, this training was one of the successful event. Even though the training period was short, the training was successfully accomplished in good coordination with Ward Office, Community members, Participants, Trainer and DLPIU (GMaLI) office.
