YACKANDANDAH FIREFIGHTERS HELP OUT IN THE DEVASTATING NORTHERN BUSHFIRES Yack firefighters are never backward in coming forward, and November has seen a number of our great CFA volunteers take to the tankers and head up to NSW. We all wish them a safe time up there, and look forward to the time when these fires are extinguished and the local communities in NSW and Queensland can sleep easily in their beds again. It doesn’t seem all that long ago when Yack was filled with tankers from all over Australia when we were fighting bush fires, particularly in 2003 and 2015. The streets of Yack were lined with tankers and utes, with exhausted firefighters sleeping on the pavements. Even now, the whiff of burning in the air can lift the hair on the back of the neck, and raise adrenalin in the system.

There will doubtless be other fires before the winter, but let us hope that Yack and district manages to avoid the tragedies that NSW and Queensland have so tragically found themselves in. A fabulous bunch of our Yackandandah Primary School Foundies did indeed bale up all sorts of strangers (and locals) along Yackandandah’s High Street on the morning of Sunday, 13 October.

The kids grew with confidence as they politely accosted those sometimes scary adults, and asked them for support to raise money for our new school play space.

And the grand total for one hour’s enthusiastic work - $464 !!!

So, to those wonderful FA & FK kids who took part, the parents who supported them, and Kelly Graham who egged them on, well done! An absolutely fantastic effort!

Yackandandah Writers “Illara” Owen Smith – an Elyne Mitchell Winner The Elyne Mitchell Writing Award commemorates the life and work of the celebrated author of the Silver Brumby book and has been Music and Visual Art Projections established to encourage all writers to focus their stories on the Yackandandah Town Hall Australian rural landscape. This year the successful writer was Owen 7:30pm Saturday 30 November Smith, a member of Yackandandah Writers. The theme was New Beginnings and Owen’s story Newmarket Sales was the top story out of 140 entries. Well done Owen.

About Owen - Owen spent his childhood in Rand, NSW, and went to boarding school near Goulburn. He spent his working life alternating between his profession (teaching) and oil rigs, theatre companies, travelling and hitch-hiking through various countries. He lived for fifteen years in Japan. He’s now in Wodonga gardening, writing short stories and researching for a book on the life of Thomas Henry Smith, one of the four men who wrote the “Melbourne Rules’ of football in 1859.
