The objective is to determine what this history reveals about the changing roles of both the national language and national cinema in Ireland. The study of Irish- language film provides an illustrative and significant example of the participation of a minority perspective within a small national cinema. It is also illustrates the potential role of cinema in language maintenance and revitalization. Research is focused on policies and practices of filmmaking, with additional consideration given to film distribution, exhibition, and reception. Furthermore, films are analysed based on the strategies used by filmmakers to integrate the traditional Irish language with the modern medium of film, as well as their motivations for doing so. Research methods included archival work, textual analysis, personal interviews, and review of scholarly, popular, and trade publications. Case studies are offered on three movements in Irish-language film. First, the Irish- language organization Gael Linn produced documentaries in the 1950s and 1960s that promoted a strongly nationalist version of Irish history while also exacerbating the view of Irish as a “private discourse” of nationalism. Second, independent filmmaker Bob Quinn operated in the Irish-speaking area of Connemara in the 1970s; his fiction films from that era situated the regional affiliations of the language within the national context.

The papers provide a significant source for the history of the development of the party and its policies through the comprehensive series of press statements issued over many years. In January 1977 during the annual Sinn Féin Árd Fheis members voted for a name change and the party became known as Sinn Féin the Workers’ Party. A concerted effort was made in the late 1970s to increase the profile and political representation of the party. In 1979 Tomás MacGiolla won a seat in Ballyfermot in the local elections in Dublin. Two years later in 1981 the party saw its first success at national level with the election of Joe Sherlock in Cork East as the party’s first TD. In 1982 Sherlock, Paddy Gallagher and Proinsias de Rossa all won seats in the general election. In 1981 the Árd Fheis voted in favour of another name change to the Workers’ Party.

It is only fitting that in reflecting on the achievements of UCD over the year I start by acknowledging Dr Hugh Brady, who presided over the first four months of this academic year and for the previous 10 years. Under his leadership, UCD moved into the realm of world-class universities. He successfully led UCD through the introduction of semesterisation and the reform of the curriculum (UCD Horizons). He ensured significant enhancement of the campus, backed by generous support from private donors, alumni and students. He oversaw huge increases in research grant income, and the development of multi-disciplinary research institutes addressing major global issues. These are all characteristics of a world-class university and place UCD in a good position to face the challenges that lie ahead.

After his family moved to Dublin he went on to study in University College Dublin, where he was awarded the Pierce Malone Scholarship. Once qualified as an engineer, Dooge worked firstly with the Office of Public Works and then, in 1946, with the Electricity Supply Board. A period of study at the University of Iowa in the mid-1950s led to an MA. In 1958, Dooge became Professor of Civil Engineering at University College Cork and in 1970, he moved to University College Dublin. In the 1980s Dooge also spent time working at the Department of Engineering Hydrology at University College Galway. Dooge is often credited with turning hydrology into the science it is today, being instrumental in the establishment of the International Commission on Water Resource Systems. He served as its President for several years. As well as being an engineer and hydrologist, he was also a climatologist and served as the chairman of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the World Climate Impact Advisory Committee. Apart from his illustrious academic career, Dooge led an active political life.
