Sparks, Committee Chair Dr. Wayne Chapman Dr. Kimberly Manganelli ABSTRACT This paper explores four Wildean texts, their techniques, and their purposes, beginning with an introduction to Wilde’s life, contemporary culture, and his major educational and ideological influences—a familiarity that is necessary to understand his more subtle and subversive meanings. The second chapter deals with Wilde’s pre- incarceration texts, “The Decay of Lying” and The Picture of Dorian Gray . The essay serves almost as a guidebook for the writing of the novel and through similarities in theme and vocabulary, perfectly sets up a comparison with the post-incarceration works—De Profundis and The Ballad of Reading Gaol —which will be examined in the third chapter, along with various biographical elements which are necessary to any interpretation of De Profundis . -

Between 27th century BCE and 15th century BCE, the Minoan civilization identified art as ceramics, frescos and landscapes. At the time of the First Qin Emperor, Qin Shi Huang, in 210 BE, the Chinese defined art as 8,099 individual and life-size terracotta figures, which were buried alongside him in his tomb. And of course the Egyptians created art forms ranging from papyrus drawings to hieroglyphics to pyramids from 5000 BCE to approximately 500 AD. -

Contents (5 items): 4 letters, 1 set of notes. Ross Env b.2.i A letter (1 leaf, manuscript) from H.V.S. [Hedley Vicars Storey, author and bookseller, manager of the Shelley Book Agency, 1870-1929] to Christopher Millard [Christopher Sclater Millard, author and bookseller, 1872- 1927]; dated 14th February 1912. Storey writes that he has been unwell and has gone to Brighton to recover. He explains that he has written to a friend in Oxford who will look at Pan and get the information Millard wants, noting that he was not well enough to go to the Bodleian before he left Oxford but will write again when he hears more. He also writes that he has something to send to Millard and that he recently read Millard’s letter about Oscar Wilde’s letters [the title of the publication not deciphered] and that he bought one of Wilde’s letters two years ago and, although he sold it, kept a copy which he asks if Millard would like to see. He concludes by sympathising with Millard over his financial situation and explaining that he too has yet to make his fortune, noting that his partnership was the ‘biggest trouble of my life’ [the name of Storey’s partner could not be deciphered]. Most of the Dulau material had been in the possession of Robert B. Ross (Oscar Wilde's literary executor), Christopher S. Millard (a.k.a. Stuart Mason, the Wilde bibliographer), and Vyvyan B. Holland (Wilde's only surviving son). Since 1929, the Clark Library has steadily purchased important new material and in the year 2000, the collection was estimated to contain over 65,000 items. Three major aspects of Wildean literary work serve as handles for this thesis examination. They are the Wildean interpretation of theoria,Wilde's literary technique and philosophical assertion of masks and poses and Wilde's favor of the social dandy. In addition to these three aspects, this thesis utilizes four of Wilde's works as primary sources. These are The Pictureof Dorian Gray, The Importanceof Being Earnest, "The Decay of Lying," and "The Critic as Artist." Like most current critiques of Wilde, this thesis relies on many of the reading strategies of postmodern criticism. Additionally, this study takes into account the overall critical history and personal biography of Wilde. Finally, this thesis asserts that Wilde's constructed self is a self that is multi essenced and, therefore, in direct conflict with the traditional Western notion of the self. -

ABSTRACT In this thesis I analyse a section of the works of playwright, poet, novelist and essayist, Oscar Wilde, with the purpose of interpreting his philosophy of art. The works I interrogate range from his Oxford student notes of 1878-9 to his prose work in 1891. This period includes the phase when Wilde was best known as the aesthete-dandy, during his postgraduate years, but before his fame as a playwright was confirmed. It also predates his conviction, in 1895, for sexual intimacy with other men. While it may be almost impossible for modern readers to separate Wilde’s work from events in his life, analyses of what Wilde actually says in his postgraduate lectures, letters, fiction and mature prose, can help circumvent some of the ambiguities that have arisen about his thinking as a result of his celebrity-notoriety as a dandy, society wit, and sodomite. What underpins this thesis is a re-reading of Wilde’s own statements regarding the relationship between art and society in his writing. These include his assertions, expressed in individual works, about beauty, art, the artist, the critic and the spectator, which are customarily read as contradictory: such contradictions are interpreted here as part of Wilde’s evolving thought, and as being crucial to the dialectical core of his philosophy. -
