Fire & Rescue NSW’s (FRNSW) program is provided to residents with limited domestic support, ie no access to family, friends or neighbours who can assist, and are living in their own or a privately rented home in FRNSW fire districts. This includes frail aged people (aged over 65) and people with disabilities. Specialised smoke alarms are available for people who are deaf or have a hearing impairment. These have a flashing strobe light and/or a vibrating pad that can be placed under the pillow which activate when the smoke alarm sounds and are designed to interconnect with conventional audible alarms in different locations within the home. If one of the alarms senses smoke, all alarms will sound, the strobe will flash and the vibrating pad will operate. See www.fire.nsw.gov.au/page.php?id=629 for information. Emergency call 106. Residents who are unable to change their smoke alarm batteries should contact their nearest fire station each year to get assistance at no cost. If your smoke alarm ‘chirps’ earlier, this indicates a low battery level. Firefighters will visit the residence at an arranged time to install a battery operated smoke alarm or replace existing smoke alarm batteries at no installation cost. The resident must supply the battery-operated smoke alarm or batteries. Firefighters can provide smoke alarm advice while visiting the premises. For information, see www.fire.nsw.gov.au YOUR PARTICIPATION COUNTS Expressions of Interest – ACI and CEC Consumer Council The Agency for Clinical Innovation (ACI) and Clinical Excellence Commission (CEC) are establishing a joint Consumer Council in 2018 in order to create a stronger consumer voice for safety, quality and innovation in NSW health across both organisations. Members will be appointed for two years to attend meetings and may be asked for input into the ongoing work of the ACI and CEC between meetings. The Council will meet up to four times per year, each for 3 hours (likely 3pm-6pm though this can be negotiated). The first meeting will be on 20 June 2018. Meetings will be face-to-face with remote and virtual meeting options for members as required. Submit a letter to [email protected] or [email protected] by Monday 7 May 2018. Survey - Fund It and Fix It - www.everyaustraliancounts.com.au/fund-fix-hits-canberra For many people with disability, the NDIS has changed their lives but the NDIS is not working well for everyone. Now Every Australian Counts states that two things are required from the decision-makers: 1. the problems with the NDIS fixed and; 2. the scheme to finally be fully funded. Therefore it is launching this campaign to get the NDIS back on track, and it starts with this survey asking you what you think should be fixed first. You can complete the 5-minute survey and sign the petition at the above website.
