Rarick, Cleveland State University This book focuses on a forensics-style re-examination of several historical events. The purpose of these studies is to afford readers the opportunity to apply basic principles of physics to unsolved mysteries STUDIESCASE IN PHYSICS FORENSIC and controversial events in order to settle the historical debate. We identify nine advantages of using case studies as a pedagogical approach to understanding forensic physics. Each of these nine advantages is the focus of a chapter of this book. Within each chapter, we show how a cascade of unlikely events resulted in an unpredictable catastrophe and use introductory-level physics to analyze the outcome. Armed with the tools of a good forensic physicist, the reader will realize that the historical record is far from being a set of agreed upon immutable facts; instead, it is a living, changing thing that is open to re-visitation, re-examination, and re-interpretation. BASEBALL FROM BELOW: HOW AMERICA’S PASTIME BECAME A HEMISPHERIC CULTURAL PHENOMENON by Michael Warren Gallemore A thesis submitted to the faculty of The University of North Carolina at Charlotte in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Latin American Studies Charlotte 2015 Approved by: _____________________________ Dr. Gregory Weeks _____________________________ Dr. Jurgen Buchenau _____________________________ Dr. Benny Andres ii ©2015 Michael Warren Gallemore ALL RIGHTS RESERVED iii ABSTRACT MICHAEL WARREN GALLEMORE Baseball from below: how America’s pastime became a hemispheric cultural phenomenon (Under the direction of DR. GREG WEEKS) The game of baseball has rarely changed since its beginnings, and its resultant ascent to the United States national pastime has done little to change the fundamentals of the sport. However, there have been significant shifts in the demographics of Major League Baseball. Latino players have seen their numbers jump up to 26.9% (2012) from single digits in the 1960s, while African-American players peaked at 18.5% two decades after desegregation, but has since fallen to the current (2012) level of 7.2%. The goal of this research project is to determine the cause for the rise in the numbers of foreign-born Latino baseball players appearing in the United States’ top baseball league. Previous historiography on the subject has suggested that U.S. neocolonial patterns led to baseball’s wild spread across parts of Latin America; consequently, these patterns contribute to the significant influx of foreign-born Latinos debuting in Major League Baseball. What has not been examined extensively is the effect economic factors have on the rise and fall of the number of players moving to Major League Baseball.

  • Constructions of Toxic Masculinity in Dramatic, Metaphorized, and Real-Life War Spaces
Boys Will Be Boys: Constructions of Toxic Masculinity in Dramatic, Metaphorized, and Real-Life War Spaces Nicholas Keough English War is violent; war is destructive; war is masculine. Although notable historical—as well as more recent—exceptions exist, men have traditionally acted as the instigators, organizers, and executers of war. Both real-life war as well as its dramatic and metaphorized representation in art and entertainment have worked to construct and idealize a heroic masculine paradigm. From the ancient Greek and Roman culture and their corresponding literary epics, through early modern conceptions of the masculine ethos and Renaissance drama, and up to and including the modern US military complex and its paid association with the National Football League, history has consistently provided a privileged space in which an enduring blueprint for the hypermasculine war hero is preserved. More specifically, in William Shakespeare’s Coriolanus and 1 Henry IV, as in real-life war, and the metaphorized war of the NFL, the physical landscape of the battlefield functions as a performance arena in which toxic masculinity is constructed, privileged, and perpetuated. For many cultures, in order to become a man, a young boy must participate in a culturally-prescribed rite of passage. Oftentimes, these rituals require displays of courage and stoicism—Vanuatu land diving; or require violence and aggression—the Spartan Krypteia; or require silently enduring pain and humiliation—college fraternity hazing. Acquiring one’s masculinity, then, is cross-culturally recognized as a socially constructed process through which one must successfully pass, and not a biological trait with which one is naturally born.
