Views, Which Speaks to the Impact He Has on People Dr. Ivan Joseph Award-Winning Performance Coach, Leadership and Cultural Transformation Expert Dr. Ivan Joseph inspires and coaches people and teams to maximize their potential. An award-winning coach, educator, and leader, Joseph has spent his career leading cultural transformation, helping people believe in themselves, and creating cohesive teams. He speaks about self-confidence, embracing the “grit” to persevere in spite of setbacks, and leading teams to success, drawing from the lessons he’s learned from a life in sport. Born in Guyana, South America, Joseph arrived in Toronto at the age of five, with only the clothes he was wearing. The Joseph family lived in one of the poorest and most dangerous neighborhoods in Canada, until hard work and good fortune helped them move to a rural farming community—where Ivan was fortunate to develop unstoppable work ethic and sky-high aspirations. While serving as a professor and soccer coach at Graceland University, Joseph developed the soccer program from the ground up. In just five years, he led both the men’s and women’s teams to #1 national rankings and helped the men’s team win their first ever national championship. As a result, he was recognized by The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics as National Coach of the Year in 2006. As Director of Athletics at Ryerson University, Joseph led the athletic program to national prominence. The Ryerson Rams won provincial and national championships for the first time in the institution’s history — while achieving GPAs higher than the student body average. Joseph also spearheaded the landmark $100 million renovation of the historic and beloved Maple Leaf Gardens. In this new culture of belonging and pride across Ryerson’s diverse urban campus, student-athletes broke records with their athletic, academic and outreach activities. Currently the Vice President, Student Affairs at Laurier University, Joseph leads the university’s effort to promote interconnectedness and belonging among a diverse student body drawn from across the country and around the globe. Joseph is regularly called on to support national team programs. In 2018 he was selected as Head Coach of the women’s national soccer team in his native Guyana. While serving as high-performance coach for the Canadian men’s basketball team. They won the country’s first ever FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup in 2017. Joseph’s TEDx Talk has more than 20 million views, which speaks to the impact he has on people.     Welcome to Ryerson’s Mattamy Athletic Centre, home of the Ryerson Rams and former Maple Leaf Gardens! -First Floor- Originally Ice Level at Maple Leaf Gardens Our main entrance is located under the original Maple Leaf Gardens marquee. The marquee is the only place the building is still labeled as Maple Leaf Gardens. Mattamy Athletic Centre is deemed National Historic Site of Canada, and so the facade and the exterior walls will remain untouched. The initial build of Maple Leaf Gardens it took just 5 Months and 12 days to build. The transition to Mattamy Athletic Centre started in January 2010 and lasted to August 2012, MAC officially opened up its doors on September 6th 2012. The building is owned by Ryerson University and Loblaws Inc. The architect for the building is BBB Architects Inc. The contractor was Buttcon Limited. The building was completely gutted right to the exterior walls It was during the early stages of the process that architects/contractors realized that the arena seating was actually holding the exterior walls up. And in order to keep the building from collapsing down onto them, they had to reinforce with bracing supports each section of the building and remove the seating one section at a time. During the construction they had to dig down in order to build underground parking for our neighbours in the Loblaws. When they dug down, they found a river running below the Gardens. The building is managed and operated by Spectra Venue Management. Spectra manages more than 125 facilities around the world. Other Spectra venues in Canada include: GM Centre in Oshawa, Budweiser Gardens in London, First Ontario Centre in Hamilton and the WFCU Centre in Windsor.

    7'2" Tanor Ngom Poised To Transform Ryerson Rams Basketball By CBC News October 3, 2017 The Ryerson Rams men's basketball team are welcoming a towering new recruit this year: Tanor Ngom, a Senegalese 19-year-old who measures seven feet, two inches. That puts him in arm's reach of the tallest NBA players of all time — a group that Ngom isn't shy to admit he'd like to join one day. "As with any basketball player who plays the game, I'm wishing to make it to the NBA. But I'll just keep playing my game and see where it brings me," he told CBC Toronto's Dwight Drummond. It's already brought him far. At 15, he left Senegal to play ball in Spain and Germany. After returning to Senegal to finish his studies, he met head basketball coach Roy Rana while he was visiting last spring. Ngom was participating at a camp with SEED academy, a basketball student-athlete program in Thies, Senegal. "Me being a seven foot two guy he got interested, he asked a bit of questions about where I was playing," he remembered. Ngom could represent a chance for the Rams to break up the longstanding supremacy of the Carleton Ravens, who narrowly defeated Ryerson in a fight for the University sports national title last March. For now, Ngom is now getting to know the Ryerson campus — and fielding requests for photos from his new classmates. "You kind of get used to it," he said of the attention. "It's been awhile since I've been almost this height." The focus, said Ngom, remains overwhelmingly on basketball.

BRIGHTER DAYS ARE AHEAD WITH A NEW FACILITY AT MAPLE LEAF GARDENS AND THE DETERMINATION OF ATHLETICS DIRECTOR IVAN JOSEPH, WHO BRINGS HIS WINNING ATTITUDE TO RYERSON SPORTS AND RECREATION van Joseph was only three months old when his father left Guyana. His mother left a year later, handing him over to his grandparents so she could move to New York. Carmen Joseph had no boots, no winter coat and no desire to splinter her family, but the factory job she found was crucial in helping to fund her husband’s university education in Canada, and their shared dream of a better life for their children. Carmen lived in a little rented room while her husband studied hundreds of kilometres away, first at Nova Scotia IAgricultural College, and then at McGill University. She and Ivan Sr. only saw each other over the summer months and had to follow their son’s growth through the accounts of those they left behind in Guyana. “My grandmother, being a wise woman, who could never read or write, saw something special in him,” said Carmen. “She would tell me, ‘You know, this little boy’s going to go very far.’ With all the little pension she got, she sent him to private school back in Guyana, and would often give him errands to go to the bank, to let him count her money and make him in charge of her business.” Four decades later, a needy BlackBerry fussing on a desk deep inside Ryerson University hints at the result of those sacri- fices.
