Monday, May 9-16 Number One Hundred Fifty Eight-Nine HIT OF THE WEEK: THE LETTEF SJEJ - Joe Tex (Dia,l) Headed for everyone's top ten. It may be one of the biggest h:.tf of the year I CORRESPONDENTS PICK; OPUS 1J - Four Seasons (Philips) At their best and a top selection for Noel Belue, Dick Reus, Slip Paradise, Danny Dee, Charles Owens, Paul Miller, Steve Warren, and Tommy White. HOT ACTION RECORD: SWEET DREAMS - Tommy McClain (MSL) I had a funny feeling about this simple-sounding thing the first time I heard it. Hard to hear it...but, it’s the best proven tip of the week. Started in Texas and Louisiana. Now making its move in Tennessee, Georgia and North Carolina. SOUTHERN SPECIAL: I LOVE ONIONS - Susan Christie (Columbia) Top request item at WQXI, WGNI and WFOM. A very strong novelty record that is a top ten seller in Atlanta. RED RUBBER BALL - The Cyrkle (Columbia) Absolute smash! Credit goes to Barry Sullivan-KLVI and Bruce Angel-KEYS, who tipped us on it during the first week of April. Their choice was followed by Ron Tompkins, John Trenton, Sonny Martin, and Jess Branson. This record should make the national top twenty and credit goes to the above people for being first in the nation to spot its potential. SMS PICK OF THE WEEK: THIS HEART OF MINE - Marvin Gaye (Tamla) Back in the big hit groove. He never sounded better. BOX 9967 • ATLANTA, GEORGIA 30319 • TELEPHONE 636-1951 Monday, May 9~l6 -2- Number One Hundred Fifty Eight-Nine NEWS AND NOTES W e ’ll be on vacation for the next two weeks. They'll be no survey for next week. Please mail your reports toward the middle of next week. W e ’ll try to get to press with the next issue on the 23rd. Appreciate your cooperation, as it is the first extended vacation we’ve had in several years. Shannon-WPGA-Perry, Georgia, music director would appreciate any assistance offered in obtaining new releases. Station is full time top forty and re ceives little attention, (it’s a good small radio market.) Myrtle Beach, South Carolina is about set for another big tourist season and Billy Smith at WTGR would also appreciate any service on newer releases. Now, once again, for the record to our correspondents, I have no formula for obtaining new releases. This is an internal operational problem for your station. It is the responsibility of your general manager to see that the program director has the materials with which to work. And if you are lacking programming materials such as records, then it is a public relations job the two must do. You must sell your station to a record manufacturer or distributor. They are in no way obligated to service you, but if you can impress them, as you do potential time buyers, I am sure your tree will bear fruit, in most cases. I began my career at a small station, and I also worked for a record company before I entered broadcasting. I see both sides of the issue, so do not write me or any company a letter in poor taste demanding this and that. Use my experiences and that of others to be diplomatic and cooperative and pray for the best. Otherwise your problems will fall on deaf ears and in many cases already have. New area Pulse for Charlotte shows WGIV, once again number one. They deserve much credit, because they beat one of the best operations in the South, which I ’m sure will roar back to the top. Chet Smith, former program director of WROD joins WFUN as a staff announcer- deejay. Paul Wolfe, program director at WRDW-Augusta, Georgia has an opening for a man holding a first class license, for the all night show. Staff expansion has created an opening at WDXY-Sumter, South Carolina. Contact Dick Reus. ALBUM PROGRAMMING TIME WON’T LET ME - Outsiders (Capitol) If their new single is slow, or not at all, try "Keep On Running." HOW DOES THAT GRAB YOU - Nancy Sinatra (Reprise) Bob A Lou phoned to say that "Sorry 'Bout That" was the =jfl request after only a day at WMOG. Good action on this also at WFPM. SOUL AND INSPIRATION - Righteous Brothers (Verve) "He" is supposed to be the A side of the next single. No confirmation. Flip is reported to be "He Will Break Your Heart." GARY LEWIS HITS AGAIN (Liberty) "Autumn" is very commercial. Will not be a single. REVIEW AND COMMENT DON’T TOUCH ME - Jeannie Seely (Monument) This is the one that has moved into the pop area. Good action for Ron Lane and Dick Buckley. Strong Houston sales. LOUIE LOUIE - Kingsmen (Wand) AgainI Several stations playing it from the regular list. YOU DON'T HAVE TO SAY YOU LOVE ME - Dusty Springfield (Philips) WFUN, WQAM, KLIF, WNOE, KNUZ and WPGA. TRULY YOURS - Spinners (Motown) Smooth Four Tops sound that is taking off in Washington. PAPERBACK WRITER/RAIN - Beatles (Capitol) Due for official release in two weeks, but the 'exclusives' will be around shortly. 1000 TIMES - Platters (Musicor) We all missed this one. I guarantee it will be a hit wherever it is exposed. Group has had a few years of tough sledding, but this one has it in the grooves. Top ten at WIGO and WUST. WIGGLIN' AND GIGGLIN' - Roy Head (Back Beat) Many picks. His best, since the first. JUST A LITTLE MISUNDERS'IANDING - Contours (Gordy) Stronger action this week for Manny Clark, Danny Dee and Sonny Woods. NEIGHBOR NEIGHBOR - Jimmy Hughes (Fame) Much interest in this, both pop and R & B. HEY JOE - The Leaves (Mira) West Coast hit that is pulling requests at many stations. LITTLE GIRL - Syndicate of Sound (Bell) KOTN, WLEE and WSNT. BAD EYE - Willie Mitchell (Hi) #1 in Memphis. Big in New Orleans and Atlanta, sales. SWEET BITTER LOVE - Aretha Franklin (Columbia) A top ten retail seller in Atlanta. About six or eight months ago it was top five in Nashville, Baltimore and Charlotte. Being re-serviced for the third time. It's a hit record wherever played. DEDICATED FOLLOWER OF FASHION - Kinks (Reprise) Favorable phone response for Dick Reus and Mel Mixon. GOOD TIME CHARLIE - Bobby Bland (Duke) Has a long way to go, but looks good in Texas and Louisiana.
