Dainfern Country Club Wine Tasting

Come and enjoy an evening talking about and learning about top wines that are available from our very own Clubhouse Wine Cellar.

n June this year, the Dainfern Clubhouse laid on a wine pairing evening and a group of residents had a lovely evening enjoying the experience of blending various wines I with dishes on a set menu. Now, in August, the Dainfern Country Club will be presenting an Exclusive Wine Tasting in the Bar, again for Dainfern residents and friends. Each wine estate on show will have a representative who will be able to fi ll you in on what’s special about the wines from their cellars and you’ll be given the background of the wines and some tips of what kinds of food can be paired with each wine.

“Part of the motivation behind the wine tasting is that we’ve found that people tend to order their ‘old favourites’ and don’t venture further to try other wines. What they don’t know is that our wine cellar is stocked with quite a large selection of local and imported wines that they can enjoy,” says Shaskia Singh, PR for the Clubhouse. “We decided to hold the wine CONFIRM BOOKINGS WITH SHASKIA tasting so that we could introduce their palates to new wines 011 875 0488 / 063 176 1752 that they can enjoy.” the ber nard serie s The wine estates that will be showcasing their wines are: Bellingham, Boschendal, Kanonkop, Lourensford and Vergelegen. The place of the giant golden bird It was late afternoon. We were following a narrow track that traversed the steeply sloping hillside. The solid wall of the Drakensberg Amphitheatre was quite close to our right and we agreed, this must be one of the most memorable walks in South Africa. That’s saying a lot for a country that has a cobweb of memorable walks and trails.

From the mid-sixteenth century, the Maldives was dominated by colonial powers: Portugal, the Netherlands and Britain. The islands gained independence from the British Empire in 1965, and in 1968 became a republic ruled by a President and an authoritarian government.

The archipelago is located atop the Chagos-Maldives- Laccadive Ridge, a vast submarine mountain range in the Indian Ocean, which also forms a terrestrial ecoregion together with the Chagos and the Lakshadweep. Their atolls encompass a territory spread over roughly 90,000 square kilometres (35,000 sq miles), making the country one of the world’s most geographically dispersed.

It is the smallest Asian country in both population and land area. Its population of 328,536 (2012) inhabits 192 of its 1192 islands. In 2006, the capital and largest city Malé, located at the southern edge of North Malé Atoll, had a population of 103,693. orest Flooring provides a full turnkey solution when it comes to timber fl ooring and decking. As they have their own joinery Ffactory (Forest Collection), there’s no need to employ sub-contractors, and so they have the confi dence to fully guarantee their products, installation and workmanship. They are, furthermore, always available to consult and provide expert advice down to the smallest detail.

When it comes to timber decking, they recommend Thermo Treated Ash (TTA) decking, which is an enhanced decking type that is highly resistant to insects and water. The Ash wood goes through a thermal modifi cation process that alters the wood’s chemical and physical properties.

The aesthetic appeal of Thermo Treated Ash decking, with its rich dark brown colour tones, has easily made it into a favorite amongst home owners. The heating process darkens the wood colour to a deep and rich exotic brown that can be preserved by treating it with Rubio Monocoat oil, or it can be left to weather to a cool silvery grey, depending on the client’s preference. Once installed, it will age to a light brown colour and then turn into an aged grey shade with time. Alternatively, the decking can be treated with Rubio Monocoat exterior Hybrid Oil to enhance its colour and durability. This decking is installed using the clip system (secret fi xing) and is extremely durable.

The thermal modifi cation process uses a high temperature in a controlled environment permanently altering the wood’s chemical and physical properties. This thermal process heats the timber to

Thermodynamics It’s cold outside. Burn fat while the sun doesn’t shine.

y lemon tree is blooming and for the first time after 3 years, I’m going to have my own home- grown lemons. I’m not a fan of winter, but it has its upsides. One is watching my tree bear fruit; Manother is thermodynamics. Yes, I am talking about the laws of heat energy, in particular, its ability to convert to and from other forms.

Michael Phelps was reported to have eaten a 12,000 calories per day diet while training for the 2008 Olympics. That’s 10 times the recommended daily allowance for a woman looking to slim down. Yet, he managed to weigh in at 88kg, had single digit bodyfat, broke numerous world records and walked away with 8 gold medals. A miracle? Possibly. Thermodynamics? Probably.

The second law of thermodynamics, which concerns us, deals with the efficiency with which your body burns and stores calories, as measured by your metabolism and evidenced by weight gains and losses. As an open system, your body exchanges with the environment, absorbing and expending energy like heat and matter (ingestion and excretion). Primarily, we concern ourselves more with matter, how much we eat and how many calories we burn through exercise. That’s all good and well, but there are other factors that may play a role, such as heat exchange.

To keep your body at its normal 37 degrees Celsius in temperate conditions (as well as maintain basic functions such as heartbeat, respiration, digestion, etc.) your metabolism must burn a base number of calories to create the necessary energy. Now, introduce your warm body to a cold environment (maybe a 4am walk on a cold winter’s morning?) and heat energy will be lost to the environment. Caloric burn will have to increase to maintain base level homeostasis.

Replace the walk with a run (or a swim in water less than 37 degrees) and the caloric need increases exponentially to create the energy necessary to satisfy your basal metabolic rate as well as meet the additional demand created by the exercise. Assuming your eating hasn’t changed and you have storage to spare, these extra calories will come from your fat Marlaina A. Balaban is an accredited and glycogen deposits. Good news all around. Colour Me Right

As you’ll recall from my previous article, Why Wear Anything Other Than The Colours That Suit You Best? (Issue 6), wearing colours that suit you makes you look and feel healthier, slimmer and brighter. Colours that don’t suit you will make you look older, tired or possibly ill and attention will be drawn to the colour and not your face.

earing colours that are unfl attering can damage your overall image – but physical attributes aren’t all that Wthe colours you wear can affect. Did you know that the colours you’re wearing are often the fi rst thing other people notice about you? As we automatically associate some colours with different emotions or situations, the colours you wear can say a lot about you or can infl uence other

22228 people’s assessments of you.

Consider the effect a certain colour will have on: Emotions – how will the colour make you and others feel? Personality – what will it say to others about yours? Occasion – how appropriate is it?

For example, dark colours such as black, charcoal, navy and burgundy suggest power and strength, authority and professionalism. Colours such as pastel pink, orange, sky blue and beige are seen as friendly and relaxed, innocent and fresh. Rich, velvety colours suggest elegance, wealth and sophistication, whereas colours with medium depth are people- friendly but still professional.

Some other notable colour associations are: Red: Powerful, assertive, dramatic, aggressive (not always the best colour to wear to an interview). Yellow: Creative, outgoing, cheerful and optimistic. Black: Can be authoritative, sophisticated, powerful - even FREE PIZZA will be cheapest pizza +R9.90 per additional topping oppressive. Dressing in colours that match your message will make you feel more confident

You will need a: Primary colour: This is the main colour of the outfit and sets the overall tone i.e. a black suit. Secondary colour: This is the second-most used colour of your outfit. It should be close to the primary colour or be a good contrast i.e. a white shirt. Highlight colour: This is the colour that emphasizes the other parts of your outfit, and it should be used carefully.

For example, charcoal grey trousers and a deep purple top can be highlighted with bright coral accessories. This balance of colours lets others see your professionalism and creativity.

Wearing three colours in an outfit looks lively and energetic. If you want to focus on just one or two aspects of your personality, you can always use your highlight colour to either tone down or Pink: Empathetic, innovative, feminine, artistic, possibly quiet. rev up the look.
