Prayer During the Day in Lent Common Worship

Preparation O God, make speed to save us. O Lord, make haste to help us.

Hear my prayer, O Lord, and give ear to my cry; hold not your peace at my tears. Psalm 39.13

Praise Jesus, like a mother you gather your people to you; you are gentle with us as a mother with her children.

Despair turns to hope through your sweet goodness; through your gentleness we find comfort in fear.

Your warmth gives life to the dead, your touch makes sinners righteous.

Lord Jesus, in your mercy heal us; in your love and tenderness remake us.

In your compassion bring grace and forgiveness, for the beauty of heaven may your love prepare us Anselm (1109)

The Word of God

Psalm

We pray together Take away, good Lord, the sin that corrupts us; give us the sorrow that heals and the joy that praises and restore by grace your own image within us, that we may take our place among your people; in Jesus Christ our Lord.

2

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen.

Response

Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.

Prayers

We beseech you, O Lord, pour your grace into our hearts, that as we have known the incarnation of your Son Jesus Christ by the message of an angel, so by his cross and passion we may be brought to the glory of his resurrection; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

As our Saviour taught us, so we pray

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

The Conclusion

May God bless us and show us compassion and mercy. Amen.

Prayers for others

Canticle Christ, as a light 4 illumine and guide me. Christ, as a shield overshadow me. Christ under me; Christ over me; Christ beside me on my left and my right. This day be within and without me, lowly and meek, yet all-powerful. Be in the heart of each to whom I speak; in the mouth of each who speaks unto me. This day be within and without me, lowly and meek, yet all-powerful. Christ as a light; Christ as a shield; Christ beside me on my left and my right.

Blessing May the peace of the Lord Christ go with you, wherever He may send you. May He guide you through the wilderness, protect you through the storm. May He bring you home rejoicing at the wonders He has shown you. May He bring you home rejoicing once again into our doors.

+ In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

Daily Prayer in Lent from Common Prayer: A Liturgy for Ordinary Radicals

O Lord, let my soul rise up to meet you as the day rises to meet the sun. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, (as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Our delight is in the law of love: may we walk in Christ’s light day and night

God blesses those who refuse the advice of the evil, who won't follow sinners or sit in the seats of the scornful. Their delight is the law of the LORD; they think about it day and night. They are like trees growing beside streams of living water, trees that produce fruit in season. Their leaves do not wither and everything they do shall prosper. The LORD protects everyone who follows him, but the road of the wicked leads to ruin. (Psalm 1.1-3, 6)

Plant us, O Lord, by streams of living water.

This is the message that we have heard from Christ and announce to you: “God is light and there is no darkness in him at all.” If we claim, “We have fellowship with God,” and live in the darkness, we are lying and do not act truthfully. But if we live in the light in the same way as he is in the light, we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from every sin. If we claim, “We don’t have any sin,” we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from everything we’ve done wrong. My little children, I’m writing these things to you so that you don’t sin. But if you do sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous one. He is God’s way of dealing with our sins, not only ours but the sins of the whole world. The darkness is passing away and the true light already shines. The one who claims to be in the light while hating a brother or sister is in the darkness even now. If you love your brothers and sisters, you are in the light, and there is nothing in the light that could cause you to stumble. 1 John 1.5-2.5

Open prayer

Plant us, O Lord, by streams of living water. Our delight is in the law of love: may we walk in Christ’s light day and night

Gregory the Great said: “Dawn, or first light, proclaims that the night is over but does not yet manifest the full brightness of the day. It dispels night, it gives a beginning to the day, but still it is a mixture of light and darkness. All of us who follow the truth in this life, are we not exactly like the dawn? Some of the things we do are truly works of the light, but others are not entirely free of the remnants of darkness. 6

This is why Paul does not say “the night has passed and day has come,” but night has passed and day is approaching, showing beyond doubt that he is still in the dawn, after the end of darkness but still before rising of the sun. This is our hope: the sun will rise!”

Our delight is in the law of love: may we walk in Christ’s light day and night

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

Plant us, O Lord, by streams of living water.

May the peace of the Lord Christ go with you wherever he may send you; may he guide you through the wilderness, protect you through the storm. May he bring you home rejoicing at the wonders he has shown you; may he bring you back rejoicing once again into our doors.

Morning Prayer for Passiontide Common Worship

O Lord, open our lips and our mouth shall proclaim your praise. Let your ways be known upon earth, your saving power among the nations.

One or more of the following is said or sung: this or another prayer of thanksgiving

Blessed are you, Lord God of our salvation, to you be praise and glory for ever. As a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief your only Son was lifted up that he might draw the whole world to himself. May we walk this day in the way of the cross and always be ready to share its weight, declaring your love for all the world. Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God for ever. a suitable hymn, or A Song of Lamentation

1. Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by? Look and see if there is any sorrow like my sorrow,

2. Which was brought upon me, which the Lord inflicted on the day of his fierce anger.

3. For these things I weep; my eyes flow with tears; for a comforter is far from me, one to revive my courage.

4. Remember my affliction and my bitterness, the wormwood and the gall!

5. But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope:

6. The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end;

7. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

8. ‘The Lord is my portion,’ says my soul, ‘therefore I will hope in him.’

8

9. The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul that seeks him.

10. It is good that we should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.

11. For the Lord will not reject for ever; though he causes grief, he will have compassion,

12. According to the abundance of his steadfast love; for he does not willingly afflict or grieve anyone.

Lamentations 1.12, 16a,b; 3.19, 21-26, 31-33 Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen.

Through his holy prophets God promised of old to save us from our enemies, from the hands of all that hate us, 4. To show mercy to our ancestors, and to remember his holy covenant. 5. This was the oath God swore to our father Abraham: to set us free from the hands of our enemies, 6. Free to worship him without fear, holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life. 7. And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, 8. To give his people knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of all their sins. 9. Morning Prayer in Lent in the Moravian Tradition

I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope. Psalm 130:5

Loving God, from the busyness of this day, Call us into your presence. From the distractions of our lives, Call us into your presence. From the slumber into which our faith can fall, Call us into your presence. From the pain present in our lives as well as in the world around us, Call us into your presence.

Psalm 130 Out of the depths I cry to you, O God. Oh God, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications! If you, O God, should mark iniquities, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with you, so that you may be revered. I wait for God, my soul waits, and in God’s word I hope; My soul waits for God more than those who watch for the morning, more than those who watch for the morning. O Israel, hope in God! For with God there is steadfast love, with God is great power to redeem. It is God who will redeem Israel from all its iniquities.

Confession of Sin

In order that our hearts might be cleansed, we need to lift to God the sins which stain our souls. Together, let us confess our sins:

Your ways are marvellous, O God. Your law is perfect, and your grace is boundless. We humbly ask for your forgiveness for the times when we have ignored your good intentions for us and instead have followed a short-sighted and misguided way of living. We ask that you create in us a clean heart, O God. Renew within us a true and right spirit with which we can stand before you without guilt or shame. Do not cast us away as we might deserve, but restore unto us the comforting presence of your Holy Spirit. Give us joyful hearts with which to serve our brothers and sisters, and your Church.

Christ came into the world not to condemn the world, but that the world might be save through Him. We are forgiven and we have the promise of eternal life. Rejoice and give God praise.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end, Amen.

Open Prayer

Creator of all humanity, we call you Holy, and seek to worship you all the days of our lives. We pray that the ways of your heavenly kingdom may be made real in the world that surrounds us. May the bread that we need for today be made available for us and all who are hungry; and may you forgive us, just as we are able to forgive those who have sinned against us. In the time of moral testing, may we listen first for your voice calling to us, and take from us the self- centeredness of our society. This world, and all that is in it, always has been and always will be yours, Amen.

Lord awaken us, To see your presence with us in each moment. Lord open our hearts, To see the suffering of others. Lord open our eyes, To see the ways in which we can serve you this day. Lord help us, To see the value that we have in your great kingdom on earth. Lord open our souls, To accept the grace that you have already extended to us. Lord make us aware, Of how we can share your grace with those around us. Lord awaken us, To live our lives in anticipation of your return or our being called home to you.

Let the peace of Christ rule in our hearts, to which indeed we were called in one body; and be thankful. Let the word of Christ richly dwell within us, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in our hearts to God.

And whatever we do in word or deed, may we do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.

Amen
