His current research interest lies in the broad area of food distribution, security and safety, and has published many peer-reviewed journal articles in several publications. His research has been featured in a number of newspapers, including the Globe & Mail, the National Post, the Toronto Star, MacLean’s, and La Presse, as well as on the Business News Network, CBC Radio and TV, Global, CTV, TVO and TVA. He is currently writing a fourth book on global food safety systems, to be published later this year. He conducts policy analysis, evaluation, and demonstration projects for government agencies and major foundations focusing on agricultural policies and community development both in Canada and in development settings. Dr. Charlebois is a member of the National Advisory Board of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. He has testified on several occasions before parliamentary committees on food policy-related issues as an expert witness. He has been asked to act as an advisor on food safety policies in many Canadian provinces, in the United States, Italy, France, Belgium, Great Britain, Finland and the Netherlands. -

Fish in disguise: Seafood fraud in Korea A briefing by the Environmental Justice Foundation 1 Executive summary Between January and December 2018, the Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) used DNA testing to determine levels of seafood fraud in the Republic of Korea. The results showed that over a third of samples tested were mislabelled. This mislabelling defrauds consumers, risks public health, harms the marine environment and can be associated with serious human rights abuses across the world. These findings demonstrate the urgent need for greater transparency and traceability in Korean seafood, including imported products. Key findings: • Over a third of seafood samples (34.8%, 105 of 302 samples) genetically analysed were mislabelled. • Samples labelled Fleshy Prawn, Fenneropenaeus chinensis (100%), Japanese Eel, Anguilla japonica (67.7%), Mottled Skate, Raja pulchra (53.3%) and Common Octopus, Octopus vulgaris (52.9%) had the highest rates of mislabelling. • Not a single sample labelled Fleshly Prawn was the correct species. • Mislabelling was higher in restaurants, fish markets and online than in general markets or superstores. • By processed types, sushi (53.9%), fresh fish (38.9%) and sashimi (33.6%) were the most likely to be mislabelled. • The seafood fraud identified by this research has direct negative impacts for consumers. It is clear that for some species sampled consumers were likely to be paying more than they should. For example, more than half of the eel and skate samples that were labelled domestic were actually found to be imported, which can cost only half of the price of domestic products. Swordfish mislabelled as Bluefin Tuna can be sold for four to five times as much. -

Summary Seafood mislabeling and fraud is a significant problem for Canada, with impacts that accrue across the supply chain, from producers to consumers. To improve fisheries sustainability, support the Canadian seafood industry, and enable Canadians to achieve a healthful and climate friendly diet, new policy measures are needed to combat seafood fraud, including an update to the Safe Food for Canadians regulations, use of DNA barcoding technology, and improved seafood labeling regulations. Context Seafood is a significant source of protein for nearly 3 billion people around the world and contributes $6 billion to the Canadian economy. -

National Forum on Agri-Food Competing in a New World Order November 6th & 7th, 2019 | Ottawa, ON, Canada | Speaker List Speakers SUSAN ABEL Susan Abel is the Vice President Safety and Compliance for Food & Consumer Products of Canada where she works closely with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, Health Canada, and Environment Canada on diverse activities such as regulatory change and safe chemicals management on behalf of FCPC’s members. She has been with FCPC for over eight years. In addition to her role at FCPC, Susan is also co-chair of the Canadian Supply Chain Food Safety Coalition. Susan is also on the mirror committee for food standard development with ISO. Prior to her tenure at FCPC, Susan worked for 25 years in food manufacturing in Canada, primarily in Process Development and Quality/Regulatory roles for the Breakfast Cereal Industry as well product development with the Dairy Industry. Susan graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture, with a major in Dairy Science, from the University of Guelph. PRIYA BAPAT Priya Bapat is a Senior Consultant with the Public Policy team at The Economist Intelligence Unit. At The Economist Intelligence Unit, Priya leads client engagements on themes including food security, sustainability and the environment, public health and civic engagement. She is the project manager for the Global Food Security Index, a benchmarking tool which assesses countries are most and least vulnerable to food insecurity and how resource risks increase vulnerability, as well as the Global Health Security Index which assesses country capacity in preventing, detecting and responding to emerging pandemics.
