For example, if you have an argument, you often reflect on what you said or didn’t say. These thoughts then set off your feelings and change your emotions. Your thoughts can even outrun your natural common sense. Mr Lewis gave the example of a wife at home while her husband was out late at a regularly-attended meeting. Naturally her thinking ran along the “Is he all right?” lines and her worries surfaced until he returned at the expected hour, when common sense re-asserted itself. The thought process can sometimes lead to unwise actions. Mr Lewis gave another example of this. A driver sees that his car is overheating. Emotion overcomes logic and he speeds up to get TE AWAMUTUAWAMUTU there sooner. Of course, the car gets too hot and seizes up. Had he been able to quell his “panic” thoughts and use his “logical” thought he would have pulled over and sought help. So many problems emerge when people use the power of thought in the negative sense. But if you can calm yourself, then you can think rationally. This address was a very worthwhile experience, in that it offered the listeners a chance to consider a process which, though usually unconscious, is just HOME as important to us as is breathing. The other speaker, councillor Michael Cox, spoke on the District Council’s proposal to build a museum/theatre complex. He emphasised that, at his stage that is exactly what it is — a proposal. He pointed out, though that it is not a new idea, in that it has been in the Long Term Plan for 10 years. You can judge for yourself what our candidates EXPO think if you attend the Grey Power Political Forum from 1.30pm at Waipa Workingmen’s Club on Tuesday, September 21.
